    1. RE: [VASHENAN] Powell's Fort Valley
    2. Wilmer L. Kerns
    3. The stories about Powell's Fort Valley are interesting. I remember attending the Methodist youth camp at Powell's Fort Valley during the 1940's. I later learned that an ancient Indian village was located nearby, as proven by the archaelogical research by William Gardner. I too have researched the Powell family, but found no connection to the earlier Powell families in Virginia. Wilmer L. 2. Sherry Young
    3. Dear Chocy, Many thanks for the look-ups you have included for the COLLINS and ARTERBURN on the taxable tables. Your information has given me some fresh leads for possible siblings/parent? of my ancestor JEFFREY COLLINS, who was born 1756 in Gooney Manor and died at the ripe age of 95 on October 24, 1851 in the Browntown Rd area. He married Jemima Arterburn, daughter of Peter Arterburn. I noticed also a reference to the Cartmell reference to a note of JOHN COLLINS dated April 1758 which I appreciate. (Does anyone know where the Moorefield area near Indian Village?) Also, I see John Collins, George Collins (Collings) and Michum Collins(levy free) listed which I will pursue checking. Also, for Shirley Starks, and anyone else interested....When I proved Jeffrey Collins for DAR I did copy an Estate settling which listed sons and son-in-laws as purchasing household items whose names included James and Charles Collins and sons (unamed) of deceased William Collins... and son-in-laws, JOHN MANUELl, HEZEKIAH BROWN MASON COURTNEY. Shirley I have not found a Russell connection yet but would be glad to share more information with you. Jeffrey's daughter, Elizabeth Collins who married JOSHUA TIPTON, did move to Linnville, Licking County, OH and I have copies of several letters forwarded to me from the 1840-1850-s they wrote back to family and friends in Front Royal that are very interesting. One included instructions from Joshua to his brother-in-law, James Collins, to get land from his service at Norfolk in the War of 1812. Also, another son, William Collins, who married Catharine _________ moved to Zanesville but had died by 1850 with cancer. Apparently they moved for farming opportunities and bounty land. Is a WILLIAM MILLER related to anyone. He is mentioned in a letter. Well, thanks again to all those who contribute to this wonderful Shenandoah list. 3. Someone from Shenandoah was researching Knisley. Well seeing the Clem's listed below I wanted to post this for someone info. A David Knisley married Daisy Holmes in 1904. My uncle was one of their sons. A Melvin Knisley. Since I have Holmes in my line I started checking on the Holmes. I found that Daisy Holmes' mother was a Phoebe (forgot spelling for sure) Clem. Maybe this little bit of info will help someone in those lines. 3. -----Original Message----- From: VirginiaRitter@aol.com [mailto:VirginiaRitter@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, September 06, 2003 5:12 PM To: VASHENAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: {not a subscriber} Fwd: [VAPITTSY-L] Tax Collection Procedure I had some trouble sending this message earlier today and Meg Brown has included some of the information, but the message does fill in around her note from Schreiner-Yantis: A fuller account of the tax collection procedures will appear in a future issue (probably sometime in 2004) of the _Dalton Journal_ published by Melanie Crain on-line at http://www.dalton-newsletter.com/ (By the way, currently serialized in the _Dalton Journal_ are articles on the ancestry of the famous Wild West Dalton Gang including information on their possible Pittsylvania origins.) Melanie Crain has indicated she will post a notice to the Pittsylvania List serv when the tax article runs. I extract from that article now. The procedure for collecting the tax varied as Virginia law changed. During the years 1787-92 (thus including 1789), the tax commissioners were charged with visiting the homesteads of taxpayers to make their assessments. Thus, for this tax list the dating suggests proximity of homestead and the list by date is a real service to us. Do remember that this was just the law; tax commissioners might well fudge a bit on how they did this. In addition, there were days when the commissioner would return to the homesteads where he found no one at home earlier, thus greater distances separated homesteads (although being away from home in 1789 Virginia was not as frequent as it is now; baseball games being in the back pasture rather than at the County rec center). During this time, assessment day in Virginia was March 9. That is, regardless of the date on which they visited the homestead the tax commissioners were to request information on the number of slaves or cattle owned on March 9. This also means that someone listed as over 16 or over 21 for the first time on a tax list would have turned 21 sometime between March 10 the previous year and March 9 the year of assessment. The 1789 tax list by date will be a great service. I would also call to your attention that Nettie Shreiner Yantis' 1787 tax booklet for Pittsylvania County (not the 3 volume set) has a date-organized list for that year. Happy hunting -- James F. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] Re: Quick
    2. Dell, With as few QUICKS that were found in the personal property tax lists from 1782-1830 in Shenandoah County, I would venture to say that they were all related pretty closely in the first years in the valley. You probably have this from Cartmell's History" "Hawkinstown and Quicksburg are towns South of Woodstock; while North, on the Valley Pike, we find two towns: Toms Brook and Maurerstown-both prosperous towns and no longer villages. Of the former, we mention a fact that may not be familiar to her citizens. This is much older than many other similar places. The writer, in tracing the first road extending from the Potomac to the County seat of Frederick, was interested in its continuance South. This route called for certain well known places, such as mills and homesteads of settlers. Crossing Cedar Creek at a mill, thence South through lands of well known settlers, crossing Thomas's Brook, disclosed the fact that one Thomas owned the land where Toms Brook now stands. This road was laid out in 1764; and the Valley Pike was required to follow as nearly as possible the old roadway from Winchester South through the Valley-at all time to pass the old tavern and wagon stands."
