When I started doing family research online, I received some email responses from "DIXIEGIL". "DIXIEGIL" kept quoting books by Amelia Gilreath when she would send me information. Yep, you guessed it, I finally asked DIXIEGIL if she knew where I could purchase some of the books by Amelia Gilreath. DIXIEGIL told me just how simple it would be to purchase some of HER books. Amy touched the lives of so many, past and present, her legacy will live forever. Rick Monroe
Although I never got to meet Amy, I surely enjoyed sharing information and stories with her. She seemed like such a wonderful person. You'll all be in my prayers. Jane Mitakides ljanem@aol.com
I was so sad to hear about Amy. She is in heaven now getting the answers to all of her genealogy questions. I first met Amy via e-mail many years ago and kept up an e-mail correspondence over the years. My Druck/Trook family is in her book "The Grandparents". I have consulted her books so many times to solve my ancestor's mysteries. We have several of her books in our small library in Huntington, Indiana. Her genealogy knowledge is spread far and wide. I will miss her. Carole Trook-Hacker

I never got to meet Amy in person. We met online years ago and she became one of my dearest friends. She was witty, charming and brilliant. She was always there for me when I needed her. Amy had asthma. She had been going to rehab since she had recuperated from respiratory arrest years ago. Recently, her doctor told her she did not need to return to rehab and I knew we were going to lose our beloved Amy. I don't know how we come to love those online that we never meet in person but I truly loved Amy as much as if we had met. God bless her soul. I know she's in Heaven and giggling about meeting her ancestors and solving those last few brick walls she recently acquired. I will miss Amy forever. Wilmer, You were perfectly clear. Apparently, I was not. My apologizes; however, I see no reason NOT tell people, per request, if their surname is in the index. I know you have RITTER/RUTTERs in your family and could easily say yes or no to this question. No one expects you to DUMB all the surnames, only to respond to their particular request. I would think this would help to sell books which is what your intention is, I assume, by taking the time to post to ALL the lists the price and address where we could order the book. I, for one, would love to get my check in the mail immediately; however, I would like to know if RITTER/RUTTER is in the index of surnames. A simple yes or no is all that is needed. These lists are to share and that is all I was inquiring about-----------NOT dumping the whole index at one time on the site. Again, accept my apologizes if I have offended you, but this is the purpose of the list. Best regards, Chocy
Misunderstanding in communication-- sorry, let me try again. We plan to place the index on a website, probably Hampshire County Rootsweb or Historic Hampshire. When that happens, an announcement will be made on the various Lists (such as VASHEN-L) where the index information may be accessed-- the URL. It's too much information to dump onto message boards in adjoining counties (not considered to be good etiquette-- could increase the number of unsubscribers). Besides, we want that database posted at a permanent location rather than in passing, such as a discussion list. I should reiterate that the book is a publication of the 250th Anniversary Committee in Hampshire County. It is not a Kerns publication, even though I was co-editor and wrote a fair amount of the content. Wilmer L. Wilbur, Are you going to share with us the surnames in the index of your new book? I am interest in the name RITTER/RUTTER and would appreciate knowing if our family is included in your new book. Best regards, Chocy
I am posting this special announcement to the Listserves in counties that border Hampshire County, WV. For those of you who have an interest in Hampshire County (originally a part of Old Frederick County until 1754), a book is being published to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the County. It will be ready for delivery in March. The title is "Hampshire County, West Virginia, 1754-2004." Unlike most books in this class, it has a complete name index and a general index. The publication may be described as "friendly to genealogists," although it is not a genealogical work per se. It will be bound in hardcover, 8 1/2" x 11". There are 94 chapters (2-4 pages each) plus numerous pages of "box topics," photographs and maps. Approximately 75 "authors" or writers participated in the project, many of whom are well-known for their areas of expertise. The editors were Roberta Munske and Wilmer L. Kerns. The book presents a cross-section of people and events over a 250-year period. New information and insights are presented rather than reiterating what others have said in publications of the past. The book contains excellent insight and discussions of Colonial history, which has been neglected in Hampshire County. Among other topics, here is a brief list of subjects: early settlement, Native Americans, a write-up on each of the counties that were formed from Hampshire; early settlement, history of transportation (roads, railroads, etc.), agriculture and industry, medicine and doctors, school history, profiles of elected officials, the court system and jail, and physical science (geology, ecology, plants and animals, etc.) a brief description or history of the major communities, African American history, the fine arts and artisions. Also there are chapter or "box" biographies of selected residents of the past, e. g., Col Elias Poston--genealogy chapter, Capt. William Foreman, Richard Williams, Jack Schaffenaker, Maud Pugh, Grace Kelso Garner, Warren E. Duliere, Joseph Edwards, James Caudy, Job Pearsall, Isaac Millar, Lt. John Blue, John William Wolford, John Jeremiah Jacob, John Jacob Cornwall, Herman Guy Kump, William Ansel Jr., as well as George Washington and others. Special attention was given to the various wars and their impact upon Hampshire County residents. The landscape of genealogy is undergoing major changes. During the past, genealogical research was little more than a collection of names and dates and relationships. Today, there is an emphasis on understanding the historical context of our ancestors. We believe that anyone with family roots in Hampshire County will find this to be a helpful source of information. This book could easily retail for $45.00. A special pre-publication price was considered, but a decision was made to set a reduced price for everyone at $29.95 + $4.00 shipping. West Virginia residents should add 6% sales tax. You may order now; make check payable to HCCVB and mail to: Roberta Munske/Hampshire 250 Book HC 64, Box 39 Yellow Spring, WV 26865 Disclosure: the book is published under the auspices of the Hampshire County 250th Anniversary Committee. I will receive no financial gain from any aspect of my participation in this project. Wilmer L. Kerns
Denis, Please excuse how this copy/pasted to this from my spreadsheet-to tired to do it over-------------just keep scrolling---------------there a HUGE spaces between lines. Just below are the headings for each column reading right to left; but the entries themselves are each on their own line. This is from the the 'GENERAL INDEX TO DEEDS, ETC.-Frederick County, Virginia" Mircrofilm Reel #48 from the Library of Virginia. This tells you that their is a record of that transaction and tells you in which Deed Book----Volumn and Page to find the whole document. So now you know there are documents with the following GLOVERS in Frederick County, VA. I included the entry for the switch of part of Frederick County going to Shenandoah County. So before that date you are going to find the documents in Frederick County. I just got the film in today and while it is packed full of information; I was unable to go over it very throughly and it will take me some time as we only have one reader at our library and there will be a number of days it is closed and/or have shortened hours. I'm trying to find parents for both Elizabeth ACKER & Daniel PIPER from Shenandoah Co., VA. They were married in the county Sept. 20, 1786. Sometime between Oct. 16, 1789 and March 28, 1796, the family settled in Augusta Co. Daniel PIPER and Michael ACRE were listed on same line in the 1789 Shenandoah Co. Personal Property Tax List and wondering what the relationship could be. Any help would be very appreciated. Barbara DiMunno
Mostly it is spelled Nihiser. Also check the spelling with a "z", and as Nehiser, etc. I am looking for descendants of John Wesley Nihiser and Mary Liggett. They were in Mineral Co. WV in the 1870 census, Frederick Co., VA in the 1880 census, and died in Washington Co., MD. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Clark Rogers" <clark.rogers@verizon.net> To: <VASHENAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2003 8:05 AM Subject: Re: [VASHENAN] FW: Looking for records > Thanks, Clark. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Alley" <alley@tampabay.rr.com> > To: <VASHENAN-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2003 12:29 PM > Subject: [VASHENAN] FW: Looking for records > > > > I don't recall if I ever forwarded this msg to the list. > > Alley > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Clark Rogers [mailto:clark.rogers@verizon.net] > > Sent: Friday, October 24, 2003 8:31 AM > > To: VASHENAN-L-request@rootsweb.com > > Subject: Looking for records > > > > > > Before I get to my family I want to say that this service is very helpful. > > I read all that comes through and learn much. I have found them living near each other before 1850, but have not found any records indicating a connection between the two families. My ancestor, Reuben Corder b. abt. 1818, became the ward of Martin and Elizabeth (Corder) Pence in Champaign County, OH in 1830. Martin and Elizabeth m. in Shenandoah County in 1812. This John could be Reuben Corder's brother. Perhaps Reuben was named after Reuben Jennings.
