Is Tunis Quick listed in the 1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners? I believe he died that year and his possessions were auctioned. ----- Original Message ----- From: VASHENAN-D-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, December 29, 2003 12:14 AM To: VASHENAN-D@rootsweb.com Subject: VASHENAN-D Digest V03 #226 Content-Type: text/plain VASHENAN-D Digest Volume 03 : Issue 226 Today's Topics: #1 [VASHENAN] Lake Atlas question [Tom Pierce <tvpierce@infionline.ne]
I just added pgs 6 and 7 of Lake's original 1895 Atlas to the site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/lakeatlas.html These are extra large images and will take extra time to download. You can use your own software and piece these images together or shrink them. These images are much better than those reproduced from the original Atlas. Andrews. I haven't previously researched the Lams, but thanks for sharing the information about Elizabeth. I would like to know more about her family. James was my great great grandfather. I haven't been able to locate information about his father Benjamin, but I found James in Harper's Ferry, WVA in the 1870 census and then in Cumberland, Maryland in 1880. It looks like Mahala Short Andrews may have died before 1870 because James has step-children named Miller in the 1870 census and the first name of his wife is illegible, but in 1880 it is Clara. One of his sons, my great grandfather Hiram Jack Andrews, had settled in Shenandoah County in the Ft. Valley by 1882 -- at Elizabeth Furnace. This didn't go through directly. Sally, Naked Creek is the southern boundary of Shenandoah Iron Works District and forms part of the county line between Page and Rockingham Counties. It was never part of Shenandoah County as Shenandoah Iron Works District was taken from Rockingham County in 1831 to become part of Page County. If you travel south of Shenandoah, Page Co. on Rte 340, you'll come to a small stream at what used to be a tavern and park area (The name, Verbena, remains). Turn east there and you'll be on Naked Creek. Most of the people in that area in the late 1800's worked at, or were somehow associated with, Shenandoah Iron Furnace No. 2. The furnace was just on the Rockingham side of the creek but the operations generally straddled the creek. I'm not very familiar with the Andrews family, but I see they are mixed in with Merica's, Mozingo's, Eppard's, McAllister's, etc, all of whom were associated with the furnace. > In 1860, James M. Lena, Thanks. I had thought of the enlargement idea but the copy places here will not do it because of the copyright law. I have argued till I was blue in the face that material like this is OK because of limited portion, research, etc, but they won't take the chance. For now, I'm OK. I'll use Bixler's Ferry as a base datum and space everything off that. That works since I only need locations between Sandy Hook and Alma for right now. But, at some point, I need to look at getting a copy of the other Atlas. Thanks, Tom Robert Fuller wrote: >Hi Tom, >I believe the Fort to Milford road is a trail now. > >This is from the original atlas. Hi Tom, I believe the Fort to Milford road is a trail now. This is from the original atlas. The explanation box on page 6/7 has " Distances on Roads in Rods" and under the Name of Map on page 6 is the remarks, " 2 miles to an inch" But I forgot...you have a different book,, Sorry. How about photo copy just that section and enlarge it to the measurement 25 inches x 14 5/8th. This is a double page map. Border to border and the border is 1 inch to lighter line inside. I go to Winchester's photo shop that will do this. I am sure there is such close by for you to use. A rod is a linear measure equal to 16 1/2 feet or 25 links: also called a pole or a perch. Lena
There is a Naked Creek just south of the Town of Shenandoah (Page County), Route 340 between Shenandoah and Elkton. I believe it is the border of Page and Rockingham counties. Lena, If that's right about road measure, the Burnshire Dam - Overlook road (And, in my opinion, it's still not a road - more like a luge track without any safety features) must have been used, or there must have been another way into the Fort. You have to be able to reach Isaac Overall's place in 12 miles. At the moment, I'm not trying to figure out exact roads, just the general principle used in assessing the distances. But, the point about the gage on the wheel is a good one since that would rule out bridle paths like the one north of Kennedy's Peak. Where did you find that? For now, I'm only interested in the map that shows both counties on pp 6 & 7. I've seen them in catalogues - Rand McNally, I think. Trouble is I can't think of the name and can't find it. There's a good map store in Pittsburgh and I'll call them tomorrow and ask. If I find it, I'll let you know. Distance measured. They put a gage on the wheel of a wagon and measured the miles that way. From the Old Court House to the property. Had to go by way of McInturf Gap/Edinburg Gap to a Fort Property. OR did they go across Mt at Burnshire's Dam east of Woodstock. Not a "road" that way until later probably after 1800. Not sure.....But remember that the road to Fort cut down from Old Valley Pike/US11 at Aileen Road, crossed river and angled up to meet present road from Edinburg a little more than half way up west side Massanutten Mt to get to Fort Valley. As far as each page goes. It's a different scale. What page/Map are you interested in? Lena

The map at the beginning of the book, which shows both counties, is said to be scaled at 2 miles to the inch. If it was reduced by 32%, then the scale now is very close to 3 miles to the inch. That seems to give about the right distances for things. I went back and looked at some of the descriptions of land in the Landowners book and I believe the distances are by shortest road. At least that seems to work in Page County. Here's why I think so. Michael Bixler is said to have land on the Shenandoah at 16 miles S of the courthouse. That location should be very close to where Rte 675 crosses the river (Bixler's Ferry). As the "crow flies", that would be only 12 to 13 miles. But, if you travel S on Rte 11 to Vehrencamp, turn out through Edinburg Gap to King's Crossing, then up to Camp Roosevelt, then across the mountain and down to the river, that is very close to 16 miles as I guestimate it (I really need one of those little wheely things that measure distances on maps). As a further check, if it was straight line, the Hawksbill Pences at 28S would be in Rockingham Co. and the Offenbackers at 30S would be about on Naked Creek. So, at first guess, it must be by road. And, it must be closest road since Martin Coffman's estate ( at the White House) is said to be 20S. The only way I can think of whereby you can get to the White House in 20 miles is the Rte 675 route previously described except you turn up the river to Salem, then to the White House. If you tried coming across the New Market Gap, that would be closer to 27 or 28 miles. I've spent only a short time on it, but it looks like the only two roads used into Page were the Rte 675 crossing (what is the name of that do you suppose?) and the Milford Road. I know some of the listers have commented on this in the past. Can anyone shed any light on my guesses? Joe, I took your information and sat down a bit with the Atlas and the Landowners book and here is what I came up with at first blush. Joe, I wish I had a nickel for every time you've provided a critical piece of info. I overlooked that note a half-dozen times. Thank you. This morning as I tried to solve this puzzle, I noticed that I was turning to Amy Gilreath's books for accurate descriptions of land; the vessel may be gone but the spirit will live as long as any of us research Shenandoah County. Now, then, I need help on two questions (really the same one, but from different points of view): 1. I have a reprint of the Lake Atlas of Shenandoah and Page Counties. The map scale is not correct, leading me to think they must have copied at a different magnification. Does anyone know the correction for this? 2. Santa brought me a copy of the 1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners for Shenandoah County. Does anyone know how the distances from the courthouse were calculated? The ones coming down the Valley Pike make perfect sense, but crossing the Massanutten confuses me, not that it takes much. Anyhow, thanks, and Happy New Year! Tom > >
I thought Rick said it all. Any whose lives passed through Amy's realm, appreciated her tremendously. As I examine my own life, I hope to be able to pass her good will on to others. Immitation is the greatest compliment and a way we can all keep her 'spirit' alive. Shirley S.
