I am seeking the surname and parents of ANNE/ANNY/ANNA, the wife of JACOB BURNER, JR. He was the son of JACOB BURNER, SR., and one of the daughters of JOHN (HANS) BUMGARDNER. Their children were Abraham, Isaac, Catharine and Barbary. Jacob, Jr., owned and presumably lived on land on the south side of the North Shenandoah River in Shenandoah County, VA. Jacob Burner, Jr., died in early 1782 and widow Anne/Anny/Anna married THOMAS TUCKWILLER, Oct. 20, 1788 (bond), Shenandoah County. Their children were John and Mary (married Charles Weaver). Thomas Tuckwiller owned land and lived on Dry Run, near the Blue Ridge, in the part of Shenandoah County that became part of present-day Page County, VA, when the latter county was formed. A correspondent reports there is an item in a BERRY Family History Book (neither exact title nor author given) which states ANNY LIVINGOOD STRICKLER, probably daughter of JACOB STRICKLER, was the wife of Jacob Burner, Jr. Is anyone familiar with this Berry Book or has further information that gives credence to this report that she was the wife of Jacob Burner, Jr. SPECIAL NOTE: The information that Anny Livingood Strickler was the wife of Jacob Burner, Jr., is preliminary and at this time lacks proof. Therefore, please do not pass this information along to others as a fact. Joe Baker

Steve and Bunny, That's the Number of the Captain, corresponding presumably to the company of militia, i.e., George Fravel was Captain No. 6 and I assume he was therefore Captain of the 6th militia company of the 13th Regiment. The number of studs was likely just a typo since there is a column later on for that enumeration. The tax lists for our 1799 Personal Property Tax List B has an extra column inbetween the date received and the person's name. It's heading in something like "No of Ca??ts". Numbers are in this column, starting with #1. No one in this list appears to have less than 1 of these, and this column is used to categorize the names for each first letter of the surname. On page 14 this column is labelled as "No of Studs", and no other page is like this. Page 47 seems to have the clearest writing. Does anyone know what this column says? Thanks for helping if you can. Lena and I have been discussing the date of the map which I thought when copied to be 1825 Boye. As she notes, the one dark line on the map is a railroad runnng from Manassas west to Front Royal. . .Strasburg. . .and south throught the Valley to Timberville. It is possible what I have copied is a later version of the map or another--will verify next week and report back to the list. Sorry for any confusion. Sandra
Joe, The thing of interest to me here is how wrong I've been in thinking about access among the three valleys. If you had asked me a week ago how someone would go from Hamburg, Page Co. to Woodstock in 1800, I'd have said out the pike through the New Market Gap, then down the Valley Pike. But, I'm a callow youth and think in terms of cars where the extra 5 miles means nothing. My great grandfather lived at Saumsville and, when he came to Luray, always used the Edinburg Gap; but then, he started crossing that mountain before 1900 when he used a horse or shank's mare. I have to think about the Milford and 675 roads being at least as important as Rte 211, at least in terms of going to the courthouse. I bet I've told other prople a hundred times not to make the mistake of seeing old time folks in terms of our modern world! Proves the old adage that you can't hear with your mouth open. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/lakeatlas.html I worked on the images and made them smaller but they're large enough to see without reading glasses....well, guess that depends, huh? I added these pages: 10,11,14,15,18,19,22,23,25 Will add the rest later. Still work to do on Bly's book. I will be deleting the images from the reproduced Lake's Atlas so if you wish to save those, please do so NOW. The newer images are easier to view and much larger and are true to scale. Notice that some maps have a scale of 2 miles to an inch while others have 200 rods to the inch while others have 20 rods to the inch. I suppose that was due to districts being of various sizes and Lake wanting to fill up the pages. Shirley, you're so very welcome. :) Alley *** I looked at my family tree...there were two dogs using it. ***
Hi Chocey Can you look in your copy of the 1815 landowner's list for Shenandoah County and see if you have a listing for John Clark or Samuel Clark. Thanks in advance. Glenn Cline
Hi Sandra Did the 1825 map that you copied have any listings of the people who lived on the roads that you mentioned? Glenn Cline

This map shows the N-S wagon road, back road, a road going east just north of Woodstock to Millford; a road from Woodstock crossing Narrow Passage Creek and going southeasterly through southern Powell's Big Fort Valley to a point meeting a road coming from between MJ and New Market and then this road on to Luray. Map also shows road from Woodstock to Columbia Furnace and onto Lost River; road NW from Woodstock to Little North Mountain. I'm assuming all these were the major roads, but that there were others. I'm wondering if there is an earlier map which would show roads in this same area. Sandra

Page County was formed from parts of Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties in 1831. The Naked Creek area, which is now in Page County near the present Rockingham County Line, would have been a part of Rockingham County prior to 1831.
My notes indicate that 1814 was the first year the distance from the Shenandoah County Courthouse to each piece of taxable land was shown. There may be an entry regarding this and the method of measurement in the Shenandoah County Order Book during the time period ca. 1812-1814. Also the Virginia Assembly may have enacted a law requiring this information be recorded and stipulated the method of measuring the distance. Joe
