    1. [VASHENAN] Bonded Youth
    2. Clark Rogers
    3. I have an ancestor who was bonded to a Huddle family in the Strasburg-Woodstock area in 1802 when 7 years old. Question: Does anyone know if the Poor District authorities maintained any record of bonded kids, like what happened to them? I do have the record from the Poor District 1 specifying the bonding. My 2ggfather was George Oglevie and he was evidently bonded to George Huddle to learn farming. He married a girl from the same area, Cathrine Nichiser, 27 Sep 1821. There is no other info in the marriage records. The Poor District 1 record says his dad was Robert. I'm looking for more about the parents of George Oglevie. Thanks for any info. Clark

    2. Hello all, Just wanted take the opportunity to forward this URL to you. If you don't have any type of virus protection or a personal firewall (if you have a high speed connection), you should resolve that problem very soon. The following link will give you every reason you need to protect your personal computer. http://www.ajc.com/business/content/business/0104/28worm.html This is a genealogy-related list, yes, but if your computer doesn't work because of a virus, you aren't going to be doing much genealogy. I think messages regarding PC security and genealogy- related software are appropriate for this list. After all, we're sharing our resources, right. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] Suggestions for begining researchers
    2. Since Virginia did not require birth and death records from 1896 - 1912, one of the easiest ways to locate a family around the turn of the century is the census. It's time-consuming but you have to check each family with your surname and see which ones have children that match your children's names and ages. Bev ========Original Message======== Subj: [VASHENAN] Suggestions for begining researchers Date: 1/25/2004 6:13:19 PM Eastern Standard Time From: pangeaao@hotmail.com Reply-to: VASHENAN-L@rootsweb.com To: VASHENAN-L@rootsweb.com Sent from the Internet (Details) Listers, I am forwarding the below reply to a fellow lister on to my lists. I believe that it is appropriate, as I have seen several similar questions from begining researchers and hope that the suggestions will benefit many new listers. I also can not emphasize enough: Please include as much info in your postings as possible. We are researching a spectrum of times and locations in history. It is essential to include, in addition to names, locations (state, county, town, etc.) and dates to the best of your knowledge (at least century, early, mid, late century is better, and decades are ever better). Good luck to all in your research. Chris I have been tracing my Robinson line for just over a year now and believe I have established connections back to Christopher of Hewick in the 1600s. This Robinson line (of Scotish descent) came over from Northern England. They settled in VA and most appear to have remained in this area until the late 1700's, early 1800's. There is a history that reports that two brothers to my, gggg-father, John T. Robinson, moved to TN abt. 1800. Also find other Robinsons that made their way to TN, KY, and probably NC area. Sorry, I can not be of more help, but keep up the search and if you can get back a generation or two, you might be able to connect to another line. That was my break. Keep posting, make sure to include locations (state, county, town, etc.) and dates to the best of your knowledge. There are alot of free records at the public library, indexed in ways that you couldn't even imagine. (Birth records indexed by both child,s name and mother's maiden name, etc.) Also, LDS (Later Day Saints) may be a good source if you have one locally. They sould have alot of local records and can order most other records (census, birth, death, marriage, property, etc.) in their circulation. Every state has different records, but in my experience most states were listing birth places of parents (at least state) on children's birth certificates by the 1900s. If you can obtain a birth certificate of one of Annie Lee's children, either, probably on microfilm at the library for the early 1900s, or from the state (probably only cost a couple of dollars), I think you would be on your way to locating the birth place of your Annie Lee. Hopefully, you will also get a county of birth for her, as you may find that her birth record in the 1800s is on file with the county rather than state. Also can check marriage records on file with the county. Again, don't know about NC records, so you might get more help from someone that has worked with these. Check out www.lds.org for access to 1880 census online, also limited marriage records, etc. Also, check out www.genweb.com and links to states and counties for look ups and fellow researchers. Hope this helps. Get in touch if you need anything else. Good luck, Chris P.S. 2. Diane Kittle
    3. About 1806 Enoch Henry (b. 1780) went from Shenandoah Co. to Fairfield Co., OH where he operated a distillery on John Decker's farm. John died in Fairfield in 1837 but his children continued to run the place and his widow lived with them until she died in 1861 or 1862. John went to Fairfield from Shenandoah in 1805. It seems John's descendants tend to be residing wherever Enoch and his descendants live. I wonder if there is a connection of any sort between the Henry and Decker families. Has anyone researched the Decker family? I would be interested in where John came from. Does anyone know this? Any information about the Decker's would be appreciated. Does anyone know if the Moses Henry (possibly of Lancaster Co., PA and John Decker of Virginia that were at Post Vincennes (now Indiana) in the mid 1700's were related? This Moses Henry also sold some land in what is now Knox Co., IN to a Luke Decker. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Click the link to the next page on the top right of the list of pages. The next page will load. Print this page. Read careful what is written. The process was: 1. Warrant - right to the named quantity of land. 2. Entry - an order to a surveyor to survey a specific area of land (this amount was based on a warrant and could be the whole amount or a parcel from it. Many warrantees sold their warrant rights in various size tracts. When this was done it was called an assignment. The assignee was the new owner of the right to the named quantify of land. This happened at every step of the process until the survey had been sent to the Land Office for the grant to be written.( Before the grant is returned I have seen county court minutes where the Grantee had agreed to transfer title of the newly granted land to him to another when the grant is returned to the county. In this case the grantee has moving from the county to another state. 3. Survey by the surveyor of the "local" area. Survey was sent to the land office or Proprietors Office to have the land grant issued by the governors office. 4. The land grant (or patent) is written and returned to the surveyor's office to be delivered or picked up by the new grantee. Elijah Roye did not grant the 100a of land but for some consideration transferred the right of 100a on this named Treasury Warrant No. 765 ( probably Elijah Roye's) to Moses Henry. While a transfer is a transfer! The kind of transfer has its specific "name" and relates exactly to a step as defined by legislative acts. The paperwork follows and allows us to know exactly who had what rights, how & when. Your guy paid something to Elijah Roye for the right to the 100a. This grant language does not tell who had the right to make the entry or request the survey. Entries had recording fees and surveys were not free. Do back to the digitized card screen and click on the survey image and see what other information it relates. Watch the dates as this may indicate when your guy was in the area at that time. Read the survey carefully. The language is very clear and means just what it says! The warrant was for 650A to Elijah Roye who had selected the area for this 100a to be entered and surveyed. He assigned the survey to your guy. The assignment paper may indicate that Elijah did not live near or could not easily get to the surveyors office where his warrant was being held. If he had sent the warrant at that particular time, he would most likely written the assignment on the back of his warrant. This assignment note does not appear to be the back of a warrant. Warrants were more square like documents. NOTE: 3 men signed the original assignment note which appears to be transcribed. You are looking at images of a recording book and not original documents. The original survey and the assignment note may be in possession of LVA in Virginia Land Office Plats & Certificates. However, the warrant may not have been returned until the last survey from this warrant was sent to the land office. One needs to know to whom the last allowable acreage was granted to find the warrant. These documents are filed by alpha & year. In this case H 1797 From the website: "All of the documents that accompanied the patents, including warrants and surveys, were annually destroyed prior to 1779. Some counties (created both before and after 1779) have survey books among their records." Great website! Enjoy it! Enjoy it!
