I was wondering if anyone is familiar with Strasburg Institute and where in Strasburg it is or was. My grandfather, Robert Roy Ramey, attended this school according to a small book that I found in my mother's possessions. He was born in 1881, so he would have attended before the turn of the 20th century. Elizabeth
I am so sad to hear of the passing of Glenn Cline. I knew that he was very ill. He was such a wonderful person. Glenn and I became friends many years ago when we discovered that my 3 great grandfather Nicholas Druck and his ancestor Michael Kline/Cline's wife Eva Druck were brother and sister. Glenn was such a great genealogist and willing to share any and all of his genealogy data. He loved York County, PA, Shenandoah County, VA, and Harrison County, IN where he did intensive genealogy research. I hope Glenn will be helping me from heaven to find all of our unanswered genealogy questions! Glenn has written a wonderful book about the Klein/Cline family which got published just a few months ago. A lifetime dream of his. I will miss my friend. One of our long time list members has passed. Glenn Cline contributed often to the list, and we were fortunate enough to have been able to meet him in person at Shenandoah County Heritage Day a few years ago when he drove from Florida to the Valley for the event, and on to his home in Iowa. Glenn was a true son of the Shenandoah Valley and will be missed not only by his family, but by his friends here in Virginia. Glenn was a valued member of our online family and once again we see that family and DNA aren't necessarily required to have anything in common with each other. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Cline family. If you would like to send your condolences to the family, or make a donation in Glenn's memory, instructions are below. _____ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2007 11:49 PM Subject: The passing of Glenn Cline Family and friends of Glenn Cline are mourning his passing on the evening of May 29, 2007 at the age of 83. I would suggest that an email be sent to Shenandoah National Park (http://www.nps.gov/shen/contacts.htm along with the photo and ask if they have the photo in their Archives Collection and/or if they can identify the people in the photos. Shenandoah National Park's main web page is http://www.nps.gov/shen At that web page click on "History and Culture" in the left column for information on the photos they have in their collection. The photo may be in their collection.
Fred Helsley Sr went to work CCC at 18 and helped dynamite a road thru the mountains now called Skyline Drive. He was crew leader and earned $45 a month. There were 48 to a crew ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
thanks, Carol, for sending me the photo. i've seen it before, but not sure where. the gentleman third from the left on front row is Harry F. Byrd, Sr, who was governor of VA at that time. he led the effort at the state and national government level to establish the Shenandoah National Park. the Harry F Byrd visitors center in the park tells much of the story about what that took and meant. yes, he owned the byrd newspapers back then. In 1927, Commonwealth of Virginia passed a blanket condemnation act, requiring owners to sell their land. During the next eight years, a combination of private donations and state monies were used to purchase land. since i love the CCC i am mentioning the following: In 1933, the first two CCC camps located in national parks were established at Skyland and Big Meadows. i will do more research and see if i can find out who some of the other folks are in pic. i love reading about appalachian mountain folks and about the CCC building the parks, etc, my dad and i especially loved going up on the skyline drive and savoring the scenery. our family used to kid him that when he died and went to heaven he would be driving a tour bus on the drive. who knows?!? none of the national park is in shenandoah county, but a nice day trip from here. here's an interesting paragraph about the park "To everyone, especially to those who live in narrow streets where automobiles are thicker than ants in an ant hill and where trolleys clang, sirens screech, and people rush about, we say, come to this beautiful Blue Ridge area for recreation and interesting knowledge...; come, and enjoy tranquillity in the canyons where streams ripple over rocks and waterfalls...; come, and feel the stimulation of the strong wind on some lofty peaks. Do these things, and you will not be disappointed; you will carry away a memory of beautiful and interesting places and a little more strength, a little more wisdom, a little more happiness than you brought with you."James R. Lassiter, "Shenandoah National Park," reprinted from The Commonwealth, July 1936, Spec. Coll., U.Va. now, if we could only slow down the developement of our rural shenandoah county. it saddens my sons and me to see our natural resources and beautiful vistas being destroyed. will the seven bends state park coming to woodstock be a good thing? only GOD knows!!! later, nancy, at my soap box :o) PS: URGENT!!! please say NO to the regional jail for shenandoah county. it's bad enough the ms13 gang murdered brenda paz out here and dumped her in our river. we don't need anymore of their members and that is what a regional jail would bring with a few of their leaders locked up inside while they tell the others what to do. > 2. I went to Fallks Run heritage Festival and got more info on the family in 2 hours than I had in the last 10 years. I hope to meet friends also researching Brock's Gap next year at the Fair. Some are from CA, TN, NC so it is pulling a great crowd. Marcia Loudon [email protected] On May 28, 2007, at 2:28 PM, Nancy Shrum wrote: > Thanks, Chocy, for telling us about the Brocks Gap book. Thanks, Chocy, for telling us about the Brocks Gap book. My hubby and I love that area and I always have to check out Chimney Rock. I just went to Amazon.com and ordered a copy of the book. Sounds like a good one. Someone at Shenandoah County Heritage Day was telling me about the heritage day at the Fulks Run School. They said it was to be the following Sat. I hope to go sometime. We plan to be at Fulks Run again on July 4 for the BIG YARD SALE and festivities. Can't wait!!! Later, Nancy > Today's Topics: > > 1. Lynda, Thank you for sharing information concerning the HOCKMAN book. Does the book have coverage on the connecting KELLER families? If it does, could you give a general idea about how much and approximate year span? Chocy ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
For the Hockman line, a very good genealogy book. A Hockman Family History. Biographies of the Ancestors and Decendants of Jacob E. Hockmam by Dennis L. Hockman and Richard P. Hockman, M.D., M.B.A. Copyright 1994 Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 94-72789 Available from Hockman Publications 35 Church Road Bedford, New Hampshire 03110-5425. 15 years of research. Well cited. The authors not only followed normal genealogical formats in lineage, the one author was an M.D. and also included generations of medical information and then a synopsis of the medical views at the end of the book. My only complaint is that my mother gave all the information in a very long interview and all the quotes were printed as cited from me (some not so flattering to fellow relatives). When I call the authors on this, they said that they were not going to reprint the book and sorry, but it will have to stand as such. If the miss quotes were mistakenly attributed to me, how many other people were also attributed to things not quoted by them. For the whole, a lot of Rockingham and Shenandoah County information. I believe that Shenandoah Library and/or Dayton has a copy. Hope this helps, Lynda ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Mike, The "1815 Virginia Landowners Directory" describes the property of James STINSON as being located on Flint Run about 16 mile southeast of the county courthouse at Woodstock, Shenandoah County. Flint Run is in Warren County which was a part of Shenandoah County until 1836. Flint Run at the south end begins just north of the Tuscarora Trail east of Overall. Flint Run runs north along the side of Route No. 630 which is also called Thompson Hollow Road just east of the Route No. 340 which runs straight through Bentonville. Flint Run, itself runs just east of Bentonville as it goes north passing over/under Route No. 613 which is known as the Bentonville-Browntown Road that runs between the two towns. Browntown to the east at the intersection of Route No. 649. However, back at Bentonville, Flint Run continues in a northern direction headed for the South Fork of the Shenandoah River at Route 340 below Front Royal. Good for you Gloria and Russell! I read these messages all the time and don't respond but continue to enjoy the family lines discussed. This one is too important not to respond to! Values.......gone way downhill. I remember when my grandparents took care of great grandparents. I plan to do the same for my parents and in laws and hope my children feel the same way. I'm a retired nurse and always believed there was something wrong with our culture for shutting our elderly relatives away in nursing homes. I plan to use my nursing skills and care for parents and strongly believe that's why God gave me the desire to be a nurse in the first place. My husband and I plan for the day when we have to alter our home to accommodate our aging parents. Back to the Bible for sure!!!! We will rant with you. We took care of my mother in our home for 20 years until she died at aged 89 years. We don't regret one moment. We just hope our children will extend us the same courtesy if we live that long, but probably won't. It is a sad commentary on life of today. Taking Judea/Christian beliefs from our society is the reason for the decline in lack of respect for life of all ages! Society actually thinks more about animals then humans. Back to the Bible is what we need.
