Hello List! After seeing many discussions about "furnace" places in Sheandoah, I thought some of you might appreciate a photo of an old furnace. I can't remember the name now, but it's way up on the far west ridge outside New Market - somewhere near Petersburg. Also at this link you will find photos of Forestville, St. Mark's, St. Mary's and other such landmarks of local genealogy. http://picasaweb.google.com/SurfCityTom/Shenandoah/photo#5083432081485541330 Tom
Vashenen Subscribers, We posted this to our Boschong List a few minutes ago and decided that it might be of interest to this List too. We have been privileged to have papers, pictures and documents in our possession for a short time that belong to Lowery B. Saunders of Manassas, Virginia a descendant of John M. Bushong and Lydia Haun. We must send them back to him soon, but before we do, we will share with you. This will show you some of the married connections into the early Bushong family of Shenandoah County, Virginia. Notice the number of names that are also connected to the Battlefield family. >From the papers of Mrs. Lawrence E. Marston, Alexandria, Virginia written to Frances Kathryn (Bushong) Saunders of Manassas, Virginia. {No date on this information but Frances Bushong Saunders was born 1913 and died in 1999.) Her father was Joseph Loche Bushong and her mother was Gladys Dinges. "From Aunt Bettie Boyer's notes, I just found that we really are Cousins, on Mr. Bushong's side of the family. It is like this. Madaline, the oldest daughter of Martin and Christina Miley, married first Emmanuel Gochenour, who died young and soon after their marriage. Later she married George Maphis, on December 15, 1817. {Bond posted on 13 December} To them were born three sons and one daughter. 1. John Miley Maphis, married Betty Anne Caufelt {Coffelt} 2. Joseph Maphis, married Maria Rhodes, daughter of Daniel and Susan (Wiseman) Rhodes. 3. Samuel Maphis, married 1st Ann Wiseman and 2nd Sophia Saum. 4. Lydia Maphis, married John Hamman. Daniel Rhodes was the fourth son of Michael and Nancy Anna (Strickler) Rhodes. My great grandfather, David Rhodes, born 1792 was a brother to Daniel. They were grandsons of Rev. John Rhodes, who was massacred by Indians in 1764 or near that time. You've read this in Kercheval's and other histories. The children of Joseph and Maria (Rhodes) Maphis were: 1. Virginia C. Maphis, born 1844. Married Mahlon Bushong in 1875. They have two sons, Frank and Lauck. 2. Sarah Ellen Maphis married James W. Saum 3. Lydia F. Maphis married William Bauserman 4. George Ira Maphis died young 5. Benjamin Franklin Maphis married Clara Spiker. 2nd marriage to Grace Nichol 6. James B. Maphis married Minnie Ruby 7. Annie Maphis married George Sager 8. Emma T. Maphis married John Pifer 9. Martha S. Maphis married Charles Swartz Therefore, we are Cousins descended from Rev. John Rhodes and wife Eve (Albright) Rhodes to his son, Michael and wife Nancy Anna (Strickler) Rhodes. {She then shows the relationship between herself and Frances} Daniel Rhodes Maria (Rhodes) Maphis Virginia (Maphis) Bushong Joseph Loche "Lauck" Bushong Frances Bushong David Rhodes Rebecca (Rhodes) Hisey Mary (Hisey) Boyer Eunice (Boyer) Marston In case your daughter is interested in DAR, she is eligible thru Michael Rhodes. I am a member with him as my Ancestor, so is Anna Maphis and others of Rhodes family. Stephen, You missed a generation. And with all if the John Peters it is easy to do. Dora Luella Peters 04 Feb 1874 - 04 Mar 1963 Married George W. Stidley on 21 Nov 1897. All Shenandoah County, VA Dora was the daughter of John A. Peters 1848 - 1931 and Sallie A. Will 1852 - 1921 Both born in Shenandoah County and died in Cumberland County, VA John A. Peters was the son of John Peters 1810 - 1878 and Mary Ann Lloyd 1829 - 1854 (2nd wife) John A. Peters's mother Mary Ann Lloyd died when he was 6 years old and I am sure he thought of John Peters's (his father) third wife, Sarah Mowrey, as his mother. My Great grandmother, Susan Peters was John A. Peters sister. I have more about Dora and George if you want it. Francis Lloyd's parents were Robert and Tabitha Lloyd. Robert's will was probated in Champaign Co., OH in 1844. I forget to mention that there is a booklet/manuscript which contains much information on the descendants of John Pence and Sarah Branner as well as information on the ancestors of Sarah: Branner, John C.: Casper Branner of Virginia and his Descendants, 1913. Dr. Branner is a former president of Sanford University (California). I have photocopies of some of the pages and I am not sure where I got them. Perhaps there is a copy in the library at Woodstock or the one at Winchester (which has a great many books and manuscripts on the Pence family). I am going to have to quit writing messages without checking may databases. Mary Margaret Catherine, of course, was not the daughter of Nicholas Pence, but his granddaughter and the daughter of Jacob Pence, the blacksmith of Pence's Hill. My apoligies for the confusion. Richard

Uriah Foltz married Anna Gloria, here is what I have on Mary Margaret Pence. Perhaps you can add to it or correct it. Her father was Nicholas Pence - all I know about his origins is that he went to Shenandoah County from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about the time of the Revolutionary War. === (MARY) MARGARET PENCE was born 17 Nov 1797 in Shenandoah County, Virginia; died 5 Nov 1874, buried Bethel Cemetery, Shenandoah County; married John Foltz 14 May 1815 in Shenandoah County (he was born 15 May 1793, died 24 Dec 1869, age 76 years, 7 months, 9 days, buried in Bethel Cemetery). === I have never encountered the name Catherine in connection with Mary Margaret but have seen her listed simply as Margaret. I assume you have her name from family information. In 1968 I visited Shenandoah County and a man named Pence lived on U.S. 11 across from what I was told was "Pence's Hill" (described in Wayland; the U.s. topo maps have Pence Hill in a different place). There is a Pence trucking company at the site now (and I think in 1968). The man named Pence - I lost the note with his first name on it but it may have been Lempel - took me down near the river and showed me what was left of the old Bethel Cemetery. Your husband's Foltz ancestors are buried there and, per Wayland, Jacob Pence was the last one to be buried there. Jacob Pence was a brother to Mary Margaret Pence and he ran the blacksmith shop on Pence's Hill (again, I believe this is from Wayland - would have to check). If you can tell me anything about Nicholas Pence I would appreciate it. Three other Pences came from Lancaster County about the same time he did - Michael, Conrad and George Philip. They all settled near Forestville on or near Holman's Creek. Nicholas did have land dealings with one or more of the others, but I do not know how the four were related. Michael, who apparently was the oldest of the four, moved with his entire family to Adams County, Ohio, where he left many descendants. His father's name was also Michael, per his marriage record to Sybilla (Isabella) Fry. The other three died in Shenandoah County, leaving wills. My own Pence ancestor was Henry Pence and he and two of his brothers had Northern Neck grants that converged 1.1 miles southeast of Marksville in what is now Page County, but was in Frederick and then Shenandoah while they lived there. Henry's two older brothers (Jacob and Lewis) died in what was then Shenandoah County in the late 1770s. Henry and most of his 17 children and practically all of his nieces and nephews moved to Champaign County, Ohio (many Page County family names still there), beginning in 1805 and until 1820. Henry had at least one other brother who settled in Shenandoah County - Adam Pence, who went before 1800 to Scott County, Kentucky. Many of his descendants went to Clay County, Missouri, in the early 1800s. Richard A. Sharon, Our web address is: bushongfamily.com When you get to the site, just click on Genealogy. Then there will be another Link that will take you into our Archives. The posts are by the month starting with December 2003 up to present day. We have tons of information yet to post to our Boschong List, the European spelling of Bushong. We have posted all kinds of info about the connections into the Bushong family. Enjoy. Let us know if you have trouble finding our site. Thanks Bruce. Here are a few of the various connections into our family. The Goods were Church of the Brethren as were a lot of the Bushongs. This should have your heads spinning. :) Elder Michael J. Good Born: 22 September 1833 Married 18 November 1858 to Barbara Gochenour, d/o Joseph One of their sons was Joseph Franklin Samuel Good Born: 25 September 1859 Married: 3 March 1885 to Ida Florence Foltz/Fultz born 28 June 1857 in Rockbridge County, d/o Uriah Foltz and Anna Hoover. (Our previous response has more info on them) One of their sons Michael Ray Good married 17 February 1928 to Emma Rulette Hopewell and had a son named Robert Edward Lee Bushong, our Bob Good. Bob married Edith Mae Dove. They still live on the Good family land on Smith Creek Road. Now Bob's 1st cousin twice removed was Isaac Timothy Good, s/o Samuel Good and Sarah Wampler whose ancestry goes back to Elder Michael J. Good. Isaac Timothy Good married Martha Florence "Mattie" Bushong, d/o Anderson M. Bushong and Delilah Frances Bowen, d/o Jacob Bowen and wife Catharine. The Bowen family was from Rappahannock County. Phoebe Bowen married Jonas Myers and lived near New Market. She was the Aunt of Delilah Bowen who married Anderson M. Bushong who was the son of Jacob Bushong and Sarah Strickler (Brubaker heir) of the New Market Battlefield family. We have posted a lot of information about Delilah Bowen Bushong and Phebe Bowen Myers on our BOSCHONG List. You might want to take a look. Jonas Myers was a farmer and a distiller. Simeon Woods probably grew grapes for him. The Shaver kids were probably related to either Jonas Myers or Phoebe Bowen in some way. If and when we have time, we will look into it to see the connection. Gloria and Russell Bushong ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Carole, Give me some time to look at my notes on the Goods and see how they all connect. Bob Good is a cousin through one of his Aunt's marrying into our Foltz and Bushong families and through several other avenues too. Bob is very near and dear to us!
