I am a Surber researcher, but have the following from the Shenandoah Co., VA Deed Book U & V 1813-1815 as abstracted by Amelia Gilreath in 1993: From a deed found in Bk U, p. 158--June 5, 1813 Between Leonard Lonas Sr of County of Shenandoah to Leonard Lones Junior/ son of said Leonard Lones Senior.... Leonard Jr is then to pay George Lones, John Lones, Jacob Lones, daughter Magdalene Kile, Barbara Surber, Christine Feister, daughter Eve Lones each $20. (these appear to be the other children of Leonard Lones/Lonas and his wife, Catherine). Description of the land: 279 acres lying on both side of Ryals run, a branch of Stoney Creek, from the Corner to Survey made for Henry Spoor, ten poles from Matthias Sibeys corner which was granted to Lenoard Lones Senior by patent the 9th of June 1788. Signed in German and witnessed by Jacob Rinker. Terry Helsley and the List, I have not followed the Helsley discussion closely, because I didn't think I had any interest. However, I now find a marriage of GEORGE LONAS to BARBARY HELSLEY 9/17/1795. Is this the same George Lonas, who was the assignee of my ancestor Henry Spore for 320 acres on 9 May 1778 on Ryans Run of Stoney Creek? Thanks for the tip for "Trook". I live in Indiana but hope to get to the Library in Richmond one day. John N. Trook married Amanda Grandstaff in 1854 in Shenandoah County. She listed her parents as Jacob and Rebecca. If she was Peter Helsley's granddaughter, as stated in his will, then who where her parents? I always thought that they were Jacob Grandstaff and Mary Koontz (who died when Amanda was born). Maybe this Rebecca was an adopted mother. Or maybe Amanda was raised by a Helsley and Peter just considered her a granddaughter. Well, it is all a mystery to me. Any help on Amanda would be great. Is the William Helsley listed with Peter Helsley in 1850 census the one you are looking for? Amanda was also listed in Peter's household. Amanda & hubby John Nicholas Trook moved to Stark County, Ohio. Thanks to the sharp eye of Vickie Miller of the Shen. Co. VA list, I now have a new surname to pursue in my Henry Spore research. Vickie came up with this grant record-- p66 S-453: George Lonas asne of Henry Sporr 320 A. (9 May 1778) in Shanandoh Co on Ryans Run of Stoney Cr 9 June 1788. Can someone explain to me what the arrangement probably was between George Lonas and Henry Spore. The land did not stay in the Spore family, and it is surmised that Henry Spore died in Shen. Co. between 1785 and 1780. The reason I am so interested is that some Lonas family members seem to have moved to Knox Co TN about the same time as Henry Spore's son Jacob (my g-g-gf). Jacob Spore Sr first moved to Washington Co TN, from Shen. Co., about 1806. Then in 1817, he moved to Knox Co TN. In an item from the Knoxville Intelligencer, I find that Jacob Spore Sr's son David (my g-gf) was married to Milly Head on Jan 30, 1823 at the home of Henry Lonas. Then, in the 1830 Knox Co TN census, we find Jacob Spore Sr living next door to David Lonas. About 1831 was when the entire Jacob Spore Sr family, except for oldest child Margaret (Spore) May, moved to Indiana. Could the Lonas family have been related to the Spores? Does anyone know anything about the Lonas family? Any help out there? Gerald L (Jerry) Spore (Spore/Dressler/Hemp/Mauck/Ramey)
Brook Union Church, at or near Tom's Brook, merged with the Reformed Congregation of Frieden's Church of Shenandoah County in 1868. This became St. John's Church of Christ, Harrisville. The records of Frieden's are part of the records of St. John's (on LVa microfilm, misc reel 1148.) Brook Union records are not among them. Do the Brook Union records survive, and, if so, where? Thanks for your help.
Where was Basuserman's Schoolhouse, 1850s? Thanks.
Amen to cousin Terry and the information about Phillip Helsley's papers. They are a treasure trove, and don't expect to go through both large portfolios in one day. [I love my "Library of Virginia" diet -- I get to busy to go eat when I'm there.] Plan at least two. However, regarding William Helsley: I was disappointed not to find confirmation of his father among those papers. Nonetheless, at the national meeting of the National Genealogy Society in Richmond last month, I discussed the matter with several prominent researchers. They suggested a professional "preponderance of evidence" technique, which I am going to apply. To do that effectively, I would like to have as much information on the known children and grandchildren of Peter as possible. It is a tedious process, but one I can do with help from the VASHENAN family! I need to have all data to compare and review! I have access to original census documents, a copy of Peter's will as entered in the Will book, Frederick's Will, and some other publicly available documents. However, I would like to have information from every possible source regarding the children and grandchildren of Peter. Could you please forward SOURCE INFORMATION to me? Trees will not be helpful unless they include sources of information, only letters, transcriptions of Bibles, land sales, tax records, notes of conversations with older relatives, etc. If anyone has an obituary for William, or even a death date, that would be helpful. Please put William's name in the subject line, if you email. If you want to send photocopies of documents, my "snail mail" address follows. With your help, I would LOVE to solve this mystery. Pat - I drove west out of New Market, through Timberville and ended up in a park where there was sking in the winter. Probably rte. 33 or 42 to 220, near the north side of Seneca Rock. After I passed thru the parkland and was heading toward Petersburg, I found the furnace right along the road. When I returned east, I found myself on the road that comes out by the war memorial. Big loop. Pat Shelton wrote: >Tom, > >I have lived in the Forestville area for a few years, but am unaware of a >furnace nearby.
