    1. [VASHENAN] Same-Name dilemma: MILLER
    2. Donna Miller
    3. I am researching John Miller, b. 1809 in Shenandoah Co., son of William and Mary Magdalene Copenhaver Miller. He married in 1833; wife was Mary Ann. Problem is there were two marriage licenses issued that year for a John Miller and a Mary Ann. First was John Miller to Mary Ann Piper, daughter of David Piper on 18 Feb 1833. Second was John Miller to Mary Ann Bowers on 10 Jun 1833. Any suggestions on how to determine which one is the son of William and Mary Miller? The one I’m researching (John) was a widower in 1865 when he married Lucy Spiker. There is a Mary Ann Miller, wife of John and daughter of David Piper, buried in the Miller-Minnick-Barb Cemetery, and her date of death is 1874. Information passed down to me through the Miller family indicates that Mary Ann Piper is our ancestor, but I’m thinking that may be incorrect. Part of the difficulty in determining who’s who is that there were MANY people named John Miller living in Shenandoah Co between 1810-1890. 3. I looked to familysearch.org and came up with the surname KELLER for a Susanna Catherine Keller who wed Samuel E. Windle. These people were supposedly located in the Tombrook area of Shen. Co. I am interested in the Windles as my Nelson and Anderson families married into the Windle family. All these families seem to have a connection to both Shen and Frederick Cos., VA. I hope this helps. 1. Re: [VASHENAN] Strasburg Heritage Day
    2. Don Silvius
    3. Just today I received the following from John Adamson of the Strasburg Heritage Association: Strasburg Family History Share Fair One of SHA's goals is to record and preserve our local history. Our Oral History project has been a result of this goal. For several years we've talked about encouraging families in Strasburg and Davis District to share their family histories, family tree, family Bibles and photos to create an archive for future generations. Mark your calendar now for Sunday, September 16 when we'll co-sponsor, along with the Strasburg Community Library, a Strasburg Family History Share Fair at 3 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. We're asking families to bring and share genealogical information from family Bibles, other family papers (deeds, etc.) and old photographs. When possible we will scan the information brought in to create a permanent archive of local family histories. We hope this collection of information will add to our Oral History Project interviews. Old photographs would be especially helpful with the project, now available to the public at the Strasburg Community Library. We've all seen old family papers, Bibles and photographs from time to time at auctions, being sold to strangers, and have wondered about the history that is lost. We hope that this Share Fair will give the community an opportunity to ensure that our own local history and way of life is remembered and appreciated. Please ask family and friends about documents they may be willing to share. Perhaps you could create your own family tree and photo display to bring to the Share Fair. Don Silvius

    3. I think surely the line should be "we John >and< Henry ..." - but it is hard to tell without the document in front of me. The Samuel at the bottom may be a witness; again it's hard to tell without seeing the document. It is quite possible that the consent slips - if any - would be on the microfilm. I really have kept up with where the Shenandoah records are now and exactly what was microfilmed - it's been at least 15 years since I've been in the court house. I have hardly anything on Leah Pence and David Wetzel. Richard ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. 3. Richard, thanks for the information about bond vs. marriage. Does that line "we John of Henry..." look like a good starting place to find the father of John? Would the consent paper be on microfilm at the library? I know that you are great with the Pence history and wonder if you had anything about David and Leah? I think I emailed with you years ago when I started. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Richard A. Pence Sent: Monday, August 13, 2007 8:25 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VASHENAN] WOLF/WETZEL The "obligation" you write about in your message below is the marriage bond. What the bond's "obligation" is not an intent to marry. It is meant to assure that there is no legal reason why the marriage should not take place. The most common of these were that both parties were of legal age, that neither were married and that the were not too closely related (per laws of the church or state). The bondsman was not necessarily the father of either the bride or groom. But if David was actually born in 1802, then he was not yet of age. Therefore there needed to be some sort of consent furnished by a parent. Perhaps signed the bond was that consent. If you sent for the marriage record, did you ask for or get all the papers associated with the record. There is often consent slips. I don't know where the marriage bonds are now kept in Shenandoah County, but many years ago they were filed in little file drawers in the clerk's office in Woodstock. I think these contained loose papers as well as the bond, wrapped with a ribbon. Richard Pence Fairfax, VA ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. 3. The "obligation" you write about in your message below is the marriage bond.
