I also at first thought when a family went "west" they were gone for good, and perhaps that is true later when moving from midwest to west coast.....but our good ole early VA ancestors seem to have moved back and forth from their old homes to their new. For example: The Turney family by 1749 Peter Turney Sr was near Edinburg VA.....1774 four of the children had moved to the VA/TN border of today, 1787 the rest of the VA family sells their land and by 1789 are in KY. I am sure they moved to KY via going thru the Shenandoah Valley down into TN, then by Bean's Station and Cumberland Gap and into KY. This means the 1787 migration, they probably stopped in SW VA and eastern TN to visit the first to have moved out of VA. Peter Turney Jr. was one fo the first surveyors of what today is TN, he got there by early 1774 along with brother Henry Turney, and sisters Mary Beeler (wife of John Valentine Beeler) and Eva Teeter (wife of JOhn Teeter). All 4 of these show up ca 1769 on Stony Creek near Edinburg, 1774 on Beaver Creek in VA/TN. land records will blow your mind.... TENNESSEE COUSINS by Worth S. Ray p. 657 First Land Warrants issued in Davidson County.... WILLIAM CATHEY, 640 acres on Richland Creek, who obtained the right thereto from Peter Turney, who had it by assignment from Michael Lanick, Dec. 27, 1784. SHENANDOAH COUNTY VA DEED BOOKS Book F, p 345 23 Oct 1786 I WILL CATHEY of Shenandoah County appoint Michael Turney my true and lawful attorney for me to transfer or make a convenance to Peter Turney for a certain tract of land in Davidson County and State of North Carlina on a branch of Cumberland River known by name of Richland Creek it being land I purchased of said Peter Turney...640 a.. Witness: Richard Branham, William Cathey, John Skeen this is the same piece of land - it was near Nashville, TN (then North Carlina). 1784 it is registered in Davidson Co NC (TN), and in 1786 it is registered in Shenandoah Co VA Cathey is using MIchael Turney (brother of Peter Jr) to pay Peter Turney for the TN land. As I said, 1787 Michael Turney (and his brother and father Peter Jr) sell their VA land and travel thru TN to Kentucky. So I suppose this Will Cathey is sending money to Peter Turney Jr in TN by Michael Turney. Did Will Cathey ever move to TN? The Skeen name (wittness in 1786 VA) - I have seen Skeen name on some of the land records for Peter Turney SR and his son DAniel Turney - their land was near the Bird / Hawkins group a bit south of Edinburg. Also - Eve Turney Teeter and husband JOhn Teeter bought 450 acres in 1769 on Stony Creek in Frederick Co VA (later Dunmore and then Shenandoah). Brother Henry Turney also 1769 on Stoney creek as is Mary Beeler their sister. They had all by early 1774 moved to Beaver Creek of Holston River - Teeters were in VA, Henry and Peter Turney were nearby in TN (NC).....Land records there show that John and Eve Turney Teeter were of Fincastle Co VA when they sold their 450 acres on Stony Creek Shenandoah Co vA to an Adam Petre. This is interesting......since Adam Petre was the father? of two of the women who married sons of Mary Turney Beeler down in TN a bit later. But he did not move as early as the Turneys....an Adam Petre does show up on Beaver Creek of Holston River in TN as a neighbor (once again) of the Beelers and Teeters and Turneys. I don't know if it is the same Adam Petre but could be. The Daniel Nuland on 1749 land record of Peter Turney jr and Ulrich Peters ......Daniel Newland Jr appears in 1770s near the Turneys, Beelers, etc. in TN. So it would seem you have a few moving "west" but some of the family stays at the old home. They move with some of their neighbors.....each year a few more of the family and neighbors move "west". I would imagine a young man might have gone back to the old home place not just to inform the family of the new area, but perhaps also to marry an old girlfriend and take her back to his new home. I have been told one of the NIcely/Kniselys of Shenandoah Co VA moved to SW VA/eastern TN following his girlfriend who he married - she was a daughter of John and Eve Turney Teeter. I also know that the Turneys began about 1820 looking at NW Arkansas - they were living near Liberty TN. One or two of them had settled in AR before 1829, but mine did not move till late 1834, with more moving every year till 1840. There was still back and forth - some of the ones in Arkansas in late 1850s sent their youngest sons back to TN to live with relatives and go to school. Of course, this is much later, but the amount of moving around these guys did is amazing. I don't mean they always took the wife and kids, but it seems they were always ready to grab a friend and go hunting and looking at a new place. I imagine when they were home, they sat around the fire and talked about the different places they had seen, best routes, etc. And a lot of them ended up as land speculators in TN and KY area. I have no specific BUSHONG information, but I'm still astounded by some of the back & forth traveling between Shenandoah, VA, and Greene Co, OH. Considering the journey, I had assumed when a family 'went west' they 'stayed west'. One John Blessing (b. 25 Dec 1793) went west from Shenandoah to check out his uncle John Blessing's (Clarissa Skeen) Gladey Run, Greene Co, OH, farm about 1810. Returned to Shenandoah with a favorable report. (Served in the War of 1812 out of VA.) Then returned to OH in 1816 with cash to buy 600 acres by Trebien, Greene Co, along the Little Miami River, for his dad, Lewis Blessing (Elizabeth Barthsherrer). Returned to VA to report on same. Returned to OH with his brother Jacob( both were bachelors) b. 17 Jul 1792 to get the land cleared and the barn and brick house underway. By 1824 the family was ready to (finally) remove from VA to OH. Some of this came to naught, both Jacob and Lewis died a month apart in 1824 in Greene Co of what the chroniclers of 1900 would call 'immigrant fever' in their bio's. However Lewis' widow and the 2 daughters (Mary and Elizabeth) carried on the farm with the surviving son John. Even in a car, on modern highways, I consider that a lot of trucking- about. Sue- I have to agree. That is a lot of back and forth on, most likely, horseback. Good grief! That would be a lot even in a car today! Amazing as it sounds, it was sunny and 72 degrees on the campus of Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA today. This isn't a useful post, but I had the opportunity to chat with a Tisinger researcher today, not connected to my family, but our family trees are certainly in the same part of the forest. Information is forthcoming about this year's Shenandoah County Heritage Day - anyone who is interested in displaying the fruits of their research at the sixth annual event can contact me and I will get you all the information you need on what when and where. Marie, Thanks for that information. What you say is probably correct. But from past experience, I have learned not to jump to conclusions too soon. Abraham Hess married Sarah Zirkle in Shenandoah County, 29 July 1831. She was the daughter of Lewis and he was the son of John. This comes from Virginia Historic Marriage Register, Shenandoah County Marriage Bonds, 1772-1850, by John Vogt and T. William Kethley, Jr. Whether this is your Abraham Hess is up for grabs. Hope it helps. Marie Martin Murphy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, 8 Jan 2008 1:38 pm Subject: [VASHENAN] Jesse Bushong b. Hi Tom, Great to read your post. That snow of March 1962 was the ONE that stands out in my mind, and to think that over the Massanutten Mountain in the Page Valley you couldn't be out in it. That would have about killed me. It was almost to the top of the picket fence around our yard. We don't get any of those clean white snows to make snow cream anymore. :( I had almost forgotten about carrom boards. We had one there at home made by my Uncle John D. Clem. Only thing was, we call it "Archarena". My uncle had his named printed on it, and we had the best times playing the game. I don't remember any jigsaw puzzles at home, except for the map of the United States. We learned our country's geography from that one. Otherwise, Mom told us they were a waste of time. LOL Wonder what she would say if she knew I put them together daily on the computer, and that I make up some of my own from photos? To me it is art and relaxation. Times sure have changed. Tom, when I see your name I always think of Page County and my ancestors over there. I love reading about the mountain folks, the hollows, the ridges and the national park. Just today I came across a map of Page County drawn by Ken Grisey. I find Lucas Gap and Lucas Hollow over there near Tanners Ridge, and that is not too far from Big Meadows, is it? Are you related to the Lucases, too? I see Cubbage Hollow in that area. Was always told to "stay outta Cubbage Holler". I wonder if Lucas Hollow was as "bad"? Our older son, John, used to fight forest fires for the US Forest Service and knew lots of tough guys from over that way who fought with him. I can remember only one time visiting down in that area, and we went by the Jordan Hollow Farm Inn. http://www.jordanhollow.com/history.asp?id=26 If you watch the horse weather vane in the picture at the top of the page it changes to a wonderful view of the farm. Mom always wanted to go back and sit in one of the rocking chairs there on the porch. I read a good book that took me to that area "in my dreams" in the last year or so. It is LOVER'S KNOT by Emilie Richards, the third book in her Shenandoah Album Series. The story takes the reader into the history of Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her two earlier books, Wedding Ring and Endless Chain are interesting reads having to do with the Toms Brook and Woodstock area. Her novels feature complex characterizations and in-depth explorations of social issues, a result of her training and experience as a family counselor. Emilie, a mother of four, lives with her husband in northern Virginia, where she is currently working on the next book in the Shenandoah Album series. The funeral I went to Saturday was for Dorothy Holsinger Seal Walker. Her first husband, John Seal, was Mom's first cousin, classmate and good friend. So, I had quite a time trying to figure out the Seals. They must have all originally come from Page County. I know that two of my grandmother Bessie Henry Clem's sisters married Seal brothers. They were Lula Henry who married William Otha Seal and Virgie Henry who married Charley Seal. Hoping to get back into my Page County ancestry later. Finding others now, including the Comers, Prices, Franks. I already knew I was part Henry, Burner, Grove and Lucas. I think you told me once the story about James W. Henry and that he was AKA James Finter/Finder. Maybe, I will come across that someday, too. He married Delila Price, didn't he? I am wanting to know if he served in the Civil War as someone said his son, Stephen "Buck" Henry, was too young to go and that he had served instead. Do you have any idea? My three other great grandfathers served in the war. Well, I better get back to Shenandoah County and the here and now. Haven't eaten my supper yet. Later, Nancy PS: Having our January thaw here. Hello everyone!!! It's been a cold and windy day here in Shenandoah County. My hubby (I call him Billy Bob) and I have stayed inside mostly and close by the woodstove. For supper, he requested pancakes and puddin' meat. We still had the liver puddin' in the fridge that he bought before Christmas, and decided it was time to use it up. It really hit the spot, and he cut up onions on top of his. Said he needed it to cut the grease. Not me!!! Our little Boston Terrier, Ellie Rose, enjoyed a few scraps of leftovers. BB got online after supper while I caught up with some reading. Read the Northern Va Daily. Read the obits and saw where a cousin's wife had died. Then checked out some of the seed catalogs. They've been coming steadily. It's been a family tradition to anticipate the seed catalogs in the mail after Christmas....sort of like getting the Sears and Wards Wishbooks before Christmas used to be. Now, I am dreaming about what I may plant next spring. Do any of you remember selling seeds for your school as a child? I always did, and was so excited if I could purchase a pack or two for myself. We had the grandest gardens over there in the Fort Valley creek bottom soil. It felt so good between my toes!!! Read the latest Reminisce Magazine. Such neat Christmas photos from back in the 40's and 50's. I gave BB a renewal to the magazine as one of his Christmas gifts this past year. He and I share a love for the good old days and collectibles from that era. He has quite a collection of toys from back then, and I have a few dolls. I had only a couple when I was a child, and none survived. Several years ago a lady sent me the doll that came printed on the feedsacks like I had when I was a little girl. She is my favorite. I've quite a collection of feedsacks and getting ready to sell some on eBay. Some I won't part with. I have a quilt that I started about ten years ago. I am doing it all of genuine feedsack fabric, and it is called Job's Tears. Each tear is appliquéd on a white background in a different print, and I'm doing it all by hand. I hope God gives me an eternity!!! Country Woman included a photo of some of my feedsacks and the feedsack doll several years ago in their magazine. It was part of a feature on the Feedsack Club which was active worldwide circa early to mid '90's. Now, back to the cold winter and how it reminds me of olden days in Fort Valley. I remember the deep snow of 1962 when we could live in a small part of our house only. A week earlier a fire from the big chimney destroyed the north side of the living room, the steps to the upstairs, and the north side of the upstairs front room. The Strasburg Fire Dept had their trucks up there in time to save the house. Later, after the snowfall, I rode the old work horse to neighbors' houses, and took them care packages as nothing else was moving thru the valley for four days or so. Electric was gone and no phone service. So, we checked on the nearest neighbors after the horse broke a path. I don't remember feeling isolated, but can imagine how folks today would feel over there in the mountains if they didn't have cell phones? History is happening fast forward here now. There was a chimney fire across the road from us a couple of weeks ago at Marshall Robinson's house. He's our neighbor and former Sheriff of Shenandoah County and former Strasburg Police Chief. I could not believe the response to the fire. Both Strasburg and Woodstock had their hook and ladder trucks here along with various other Emergency Vehicles and Fire Trucks in no time. Looked like a Fireman's Parade here on Saumsville Rd. My little dog and I went outside, and watched the action. We can see Interstate 81 about a half mile to the west of us, and get a good view while the trees are bare. There was a bad wreck near Strasburg when a tanker carrying chemicals overturned just recently. We could see the traffic stopped, and then re-routed on the Old Valley Pike and other routes for most of the day. Really made a hardship on many, especially, in the local towns and folks traveling on the Old Valley Pike, not to mention I 81. So, here I sit in my comfy little house thinking of olden times, and witnessing history going in FAST FORWARD just by looking out the window. Guess, we will take it all in stride with faith in God as our guide. The funeral for my cousin's wife will be down here at our Valley Pike Church on Saturday at 11 am. I will fix meat for the meal afterwards. No doubt, it will be another family reunion where we will bond more, and talk of good memories. It's happening more often all the time..................... Goodnite and God Bless. Later, Love, Nancy "Shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life......." Phil 2:15, 16 NIV
Nancy- I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy the glimpses you give us into your life and your memories. I fell in love with the Valley when I was a young girl listening to my dad talk about his life there as a young boy. His family moved to Ohio when he was 7-9 years old. Then, in 1966, we went to the VALLEY !!! I was ecstatic! I wish I had been born there and lived there all my life! I absolutely love the entire area even though I saw only a small part of it. I was born and raised in Ohio but feel as though I belong to Virginia. My husband and I have even talked about moving there but Ohio is where my children and grandchildren are, so that's where I am. I wish I could remember more of what my father told me but my memory is not what it once was. I have really been enjoying all the stories that have been coming in from people there. I have saved all of them to show my daughter. She'll get a kick out of some of them. Please continue to share with us and help those of us who have not been blessed with a life in the valley see it through your eyes and the eyes of the others who have shared their stories. God bless and may you have a blessed New Year. http://www.scfr.net/Fort%20Valley%20Fire%20Department/Fort%20Valley%20Fire%20Department%20History.htm Was excited to find this online and that it mentions my dad, Charles E. "Dick" Grandstaff who was a charter member of both the Fire Company and the Ruritan Club. Many of his friends are listed there. Most have gone on now. Copied this off and included in my Pondering Old Fort Valley notebook. What a joy to find such history online!!! Anderson Moffett was originally an Anabaptist or Mennonite. He probably converted to Baptist as many Mennonites did in the Shenandoah Valley.
