Sharon and anyone else interesed, Here is one of the many, many entries from Mattie's 1908 Diary concerning Shaffers. Is this perhaps your Perry Shaffer? The Uncle she mentions is Benjamin Franklin John Bushong better known as "Frank" who went West to Nebraska for a time but came back to New Market after father Jacob Bushong and mother Sarah Strickler had passed away. His brother Anderson needed him to help run the farm at New Market, Virginia. (1908) Wed. Dec 9 - "Cloudy all day. Uncle finished shucking and hauling in corn. Mrs. Perry Shaffer and Mrs. Will Neff spent the day with us. My cold is better." There are hundreds of Valley names mentioned in these diaries. Gloria Bushong **************Start the year off right. Sharon, I don't know the answer to your question concerning a Bridges Mountain; however, the early surveys for Joseph BRIDGES and Mary BRIDGES may give a clue to the where the area is that you are trying to find. There is a Joseph BRIDGES with surveys: on 27 May 1765-5 Aug 1765; 65 acres on the drains of Back Creek and on: 24 July 1775-8 Aug 1775; 390 acres on the drains of Back Creek adjoining Absalom HAYWORTH with HAYWORTH's Mill mentioned. Absalom HAYWORTH's survey of 1750 states he lives on 227 acres on Babs Creek near Back Creek . The house and mill being on Babbs Creek. There is a survey for a James DILLON, heir of William DILLON surveyed 13 Mar 1754; 56 acres on the south side of Back Creek-----------this land is devised by Wm DILLON to his son James DILLON reserving 1/3 for Mary BRIDGES, widow of William DILLON. The Thomas DOSTER survey for the HAYWORTH heirs of 1751-52 mentions on the draughts of Back Creek under the Southside of North Mountain. James HAYWORTH's survey of 1751 says he lives on a great spring branch of Back Creek under North Mountain. Chocy **************Start the year off right. Sharon, Phoebe is mentioned in the old diaries of Mattie Bushong Good. I am in the process of transcribing them now. I remember seeing her name, I believe around the years 1908-09. Mattie and family were of the Brethren faith. I will have to go back and look for the reference. There may be some clues to other family in them as there were other Shaver/Shaffers mentions in her diaries which span the years 1899 - 1955. Gloria Bushong **************Start the year off right. My cousins and I will be coming to the New Market area in May and we were wondering if anyone could give us an idea of where else we can look for information on the parents and siblings of Daniel Perry Shaver and his wife Nancy Sarah Kelly. We do have the names of Sarah's parents but nothing about siblings and we have absolutely NOTHING about Daniel's parents and siblings. We have a copy of the flyleaf of their family bible which only gives us their children, etc. and we have a copy of Daniel's will which doesn't help us either. We are planning on going through land deeds and whatever else we can find at the library and the historical society but just wondered if anyone might have ideas about other places to look. Just in case Daniel's name doesn't ring any bells with anyone he was the father of Elder James Perry Shaver/Shaffer. Perry's daughter was Phoebe Shaffer Zirkle who celebrated her 100th birthday in 1978 while a resident of the Bridgewater Home. I don't know if any of those names will click with someone but any information anyone has will be appreciated. I am at the point that I am beginning to believe that Daniel crawled out from under a rock, got a wife, and started the mess we call our family. Just kidding of course, but we are getting very frustrated. Thanks again for any and all help. Does anyone know of a Bridges' Mountain somewhere in the vicinity of Rockingham and Shenandoah County? Before my sister passed away she told me that there is/was a mountain known as Bridges' Mountain. I have never seen it on any map or heard anyone talk about it. Could someone please let me know if it does or ever has existed. My nephew also is emphatic about it. Since Bridges was my ggrandmother's maiden name I would have thought I would have run across information on it by now. However, it seems to be as elusive as my Bridges ancestors. I'm still looking for the parents and siblings of Edmund Bridges. His wife was, I believe, Elizabeth Sprinkle. However, I am not fully sure of that either. I have come across information that seems to fit with what I have but it is under the name of Bridget not Bridges. If anyone has Bridges connections I would love to hear from you. Edmund and Elizabeth were my gggrandparents. Their son, Marion Francis Bridges, was my ggrandfather and his daughter, Valley Virginia, was my grandmother. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this for me. Sharon ____________________________________________________________________________________ Never miss a thing. I followed the recent postings about Bretheren,Amish and Mennonites with much interest . My Fredericks arrived in Philadelphia in 1717 as Mennonites and by 1729 some were members of the Ephrata Cloiste while others were of the Moravian persuasion. Then they migrated to the Shenandoah Valley about 1802 and Johann Friedrich was a member of the Lutheran Church in Woodstock... It is described in a quote with no source provided as, ... " a large and pretty church erected during the time of office of Rev. Muehlenberg". I sometimes wonder if they may have just joined with any available christian group. Along these lines I did not see reference to a source that has been most helpful to me .... Richard Warren Davis' book Emigrants, Refugees and Prisoners that is published in 3 volumes ... he has abandoned book publishing with his research efforts in the last few years and has all of this available as a subscription at www.mennosearch.com . Has anyone else used this source? My branch of the family returned north before the war but many stayed and fought for the Cenfederacy. My G G Grandfather William was born April 28 1829 in either Front Royal or Warren County ( different obits) but I have found no documentation. He married in Grant County ( Now WV to Annis Shell) in 1849. Any suggestions will be appreciated. John had merchant mills in Jefferson County in the early 1800s according to a quote from a book that may be titled "Historical Records of Old Frederick and Hampshire Counties"... Is this title valid ? I cannot find a copy locally. The Fredericks married Earhart sisters who were ancestors of Amelia Earhart and had large land holdings in the Valley so if someone has researched that family maybe I can get a clue to get thru a brick wall or two. I am located in Lancaster County PA and have occassional access to the Mennonit Historical Society as well as the Lancaster Historical Society.... I will try to help locate mmaterial here if anyone can provide specific sources as I am a novice both with the computer and genelogy. Bert Frederick [email protected]

Bert, I hope some of the following is of help to you. Best regards, Chocy A History of Shenandoah County Virginia" by John W. WAYLAND Originally published by Shenandoah Publishing House, Inc. He covers the early pastors of the time including the Rev. Peter MUHLENBER. If you google the book title, you can find a copy on line and by shopping around you should be able to find a copy that is well worth purchasing and having in your own personal library. Including the Indes, there are 894 pages. I have not used Richard Warren Davis' book; but I would be interested to see if the RITTER, RADER, RETTER (all the same) are included within its pages. The book "Historical Records of Old Frederick and Hampshire Counties" is by Wilbur KERNS. I have a copy which I was also able to purchase by shopping online.
