I seriously underestimated the Library of Virginia and what it would take to get useful information! Day to day I am a keyboard cowboy and am used to scouring through details on the web fairly quickly... Apparently, its not that easy on microfilm! I am planning on driving back up to Richmond this coming Saturday and wanted to re-extend my offer to do lookups. After last weeks debacle I do have some additional criterion. Please be specific as possible in your request. Requests like, "Anything you find on this name", is not enough. Now that I have found my way around the Library and how to use its resources with some more specific info I feel comfortable in getting tangible results back to you. If you have already sent a request on my short notice thread last week and didn't hear back please reply with the same request. I can't promise to get everyone's, but I anticipate going back to Richmond nearly every Saturday over the next 4 months. So what would really help would be if you could check out the website and give me specific reel information. http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/gene/index.htm Additionally, include the below and any additional information you think may be relevant. I have signed up for access to the research room where they keep bibles and stuff, but not sure where that index may be online... Name: Date (range): event: Marriage, Birth, Taxes, Deeds, Wills (Anything like this) Unique Identifier: This can be anything that can help in getting the right family line in order to differentiate among same surnames perhaps this can be a known fact. I am working on getting a request list online that I can update for viewing on my webpage (kinda like a work queue) so you know where I am with your request. If anyone has any suggestions I am open to them! - James

Hello friends, It is once again time to plan for Shenandoah County Heritage Day in Woodstock, Virginia. This year we will return to the American Legion in Woodstock for our sixth annual event. This year's spotlight area is the Bedford area with Greenhill, Union Forge, Lantz Mill and Readus Road, all within the Stony Creek area. However, as you know, we are not limited to this area, so bring your family research, etc. to share with our visitors. Mills, shops, schools, churches, families and events of the past can be shared in exhibits, family trees, photographs and stories. If you would like to have space to display your work and exhibits, please let me know by March 1 - I will reserve your space. After March 1, tables will be available on a first come-first served basis if we fill up our space. This year's event will be held on Saturday April 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Woodstock American Legion on the corner of South and Muhlenberg streets. Set up time will be 9:00 a.m. If you have further questions, I can be reached at this email address, or if you know anyone else who might be interested in participating, please pass on this email or direct them to me and I will accomodate any requests for information, etc. Again, thanks for your interest and your past support of Shenandoah County Heritage Day and the committee looks forward to seeing you on Saturday April 12. Don Silvius Shenandoah County Heritage Day Committee
Hi Dave! I did find this in the marriage index on 23rd August 1830. Unfortunately, that was the one microfilm missing from the set at Library in Edinburg to get any additional information! I am going to the state library in Richmond tomorrow and was told by the person on staff that they should have a copy of the microfilm there. Paul, I did a cursory check for any Portlock and didn't find any reference to the name in any of the indexes... That isn't to say there might not be anything there, rather I just didn't find any... Vashenan Listmates, Does anyone have Boyd Vernon Swartz born about 1874, son of Jacob Swartz and wife Lucinda who married 19 August 1903 to Mary Catharine Wine born about 1877, daughter of J. Michael Wine and wife Hannah S. in their lineage? We are looking for a living descendant. Mattie Bushong Good mentions Boyd in her diary and we have a few questions that possibly a descendant could answer. Thanks, Russell and Gloria Bushong **************Start the year off right. Good morning Vashenan Listmates, It is a beautiful primary election morning here in Florida. We are putting together a cookbook to be sold at the New Market Battlefield. Many of you have Bushong ancestors somewhere in your ancestry or close family associations to the Bushong family. We are asking that if you have any old family recipes probably handed down from one generation to the next, could you please share them for the cookbook? We having been talking about this dream since 2000 so we are determined to get it off of the ground. We already have 38 recipes but need many more to form a cookbook. We are requesting that you submit the recipes to the following address. Be sure that you include how you fit into the Bushong family and even if it is not a direct line descendancy you may have some association with the family and that is okay too. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number in case there is a question about the recipe and any history of the recipe. Your name but not your address and phone will be included with the recipe in the cookbook. Hopefully we will get this published and have it available at the Bushong Reunion in October in New Market, Virginia at the Battlefield Museum Gift Shop. It will also be available after that Reunion at the Battlefield. We are excited about this project as it will preserve those old Bushong and their cousins and friend's recipes forever and will be enjoyed by many. Send Recipes to: New Market Battlefield Museum P. O. Box 1864 New Market, Virginia 22844 ATTENTION: Judy Drury Thanks so much and we look forward to receiving those cherished old recipes and having the cookbook available at the New Market Battlefield Gift Shop. Thanks to all of you who responded to my 2 inquiries. The information I received is greatly appreciated. To Gloria: Yes, that is quite probably the Perry I mentioned. His wife was a Neff so the other lady may have been a sister-in-law. Looking forward to more diary reading. To Margaret: No, I don't have any more info on Elizabeth. I can't give you death dates at this point because I'm at the library. My home computer has something wrong with the security system and I can't access the internet right now. I will keep in touch as I am able. To all: Again, thanks for your responses. I hope to have the problem with my home computer fixed soon so I can stay in better contact. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to my trip to the valley in May. I haven't been there since 1969! Have a blessed day- Sharon ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. How do you connect to a George Buckhart if you do not know about his earlier years? Why are you working forward? I research a George Burkhart who settled & died in Harlan Co., KY. Before 1800 he lived in Lee Co. VA. He has a Rev War Pension application that was not approved for lack proof of service. He states he served from Bedford Co., PA. Estate and land records[ I have but have not myself researched or rechecked] that indicate he was the son of a George Burkhart of Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA . His father was a carpenter and possibly had 2 Hessian prisoners "farmed out to him" working for him. In this application, as I remember, there is a period that I am not sure where he lived. I have wondered if the one in Smyth Co., VA was him. In Harlan Co. (1819) from Knox (1800) from Lincoln (1780). Did you find a marriage record for any George Burkhart/Buckhart/Burghart anywhere? Inferred wife? In Lee Co., VA his wife should have been Sophia/Sophira Johns(t)on. He married twice more. This BURGHART pension can be found in the digitized Rev War Pension and Bounty Land Applications at _www.footnote.com_ (http://www.footnote.com) . Some facts from his deposition on 14 March 1832 done in Lee Co., VA [He lived in Cranks/Cranks Creek in Harlan Co., KY at the foot of the mountain that separates VA and KY.] 1. 94 years old 2. 1775 he resided on the Allegany, in Bedford Co., PA. Militia service commanded by Capt John Miller for 4 years. later the Capt. Soloman Adams; then, Capt Richard Delop 3. Removed about 40 years [1792] into this county of Lee, where he resided many years, then removed to Knox now Harlan Co., KY where he yet resides about 7 miles distant Lee Courthouse Virginia. Pension was not allowed as no proof of service was furnished. >From a letter from the pension office in answer to a query: George Burghart, Burkhart or Buckhart was born February 9 1741 Witnesses were Abraham Crabtree, minister and Daniel Dickinson. [George Buckhart sold land with wife Sophira in 1804 which he had bought from a Daniel Dickinson in Lee Co., VA 1798. The Tennessee Civil War Questionnaire of Isaac Thompson [my direct line] names his grandparents as Lyats [Eliphalets] Johnson & Betty Buckhart. She should be a daughter of George and Sophia/Sophira Johnson Buckhart/ Burkhart/ Burghart. If you run across an Eliphalets Johnson ... please please email. He is on Knox and Harlan Cos., KY tax lists around 1818 then a year in Lee Co., VA and whoosh! He may have had a brother Israel. Let me know if this fits anything you have. I suppose the best source of information is the horse's mouth - and I hope no one has any difficulty determining which end of the horse is which! http://www.bchs.org is the website - you can order there. The book is Berkeley Journal issue #33 "A History of Inwood, West Virginia" - you can order by phone at 304-267-4713 and the email address there is [email protected] The cost is $10 plus, I think $2 postage and if you bring it to Shenandoah County Heritage Day in Woodstock in April, you can get it signed by the author - I hope to be able to bring some copies with me. All proceeds from the book go to the Berkeley County Historical Society in Martinsburg, WV. Speaking of Shenandoah County Heritage Day - Friday is the next committee meeting, weather permitting, and everything should be set after that, at which point I will begin soliciting exhibitors and distributing information. This is the sixth annual and we'd love to have first time visitors and return visitors. If you have never visited Shenandoah County, the second weekend in April would be a great time - to see the beauty of spring in the Valley. More to come later - thanks to all of you for making this a great list.
