    1. [VASHENAN] Questions for Jim Artz
    2. Sharon Domer
    3. Several years ago I was in touch with Jim Artz. He gave me some tips on getting information on Confederate pension applications from the Library of Virginia. I am looking for the link that he told me about so I can do some further research on this. Also, I believe he was the person who supplied with a couple of pages from a book on The Danville, Eighth Star New Market and Dixie Artillery by Robert H. Moore II. I am in need of further pages or information from that book. If anyone has this information or can put me in touch with Jim Artz, I would be very grateful. If, by chance, you are reading this Jim, I would really like to hear from you. Thanks for any help given. 3. Good Morning!!! Good to see another Shenandoah County tradition brought up. This one has "precious memories". The last "pounding" Billy Bob and I attended was several years back at the Valley Pike parsonage to welcome our present pastor, Bill Garber, and his wife, LaVonne. Friends and members of the congregation brought a variety of food staples and other gifts. Some folks were sitting on the floor and the house was packed. I think we took a big bag of sugar. Also, we shared one of my handpainted rocks. Told them they could use it for "pounding", too!!! Gotta get going. My friend, Jane, is coming after while. Today we plan to get into some more creative projects. Hoping to teach her how to needle felt, and we'll discuss about our plans for growing gourds. Maybe, she will be a gourdhead, too!!! Have a great day and God Bless. Later, Nancy ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Friday, February 15, 2008 3:02 AM Subject: VASHENAN Digest, Vol 3, Issue 36 > Today's Topics: > > 1. 2. Good evening Vashenan Listmates, We certainly had a nice discussion about Rivels and we appreciate all the input. We now have another question. Bro. Mason Huffman was a Brethren Minister in the Shenandoah Valley back in the 1920s. He served Cedar Grove church from 1924 to 1929. In her 1929 diary on Wednesday, April 3, Mattie Bushong Good refers to them giving Bro. Huffmans a pounding. Could this mean that everyone in the congregation brought a pound of something to give to them, for instance a pound of butter, a pound of sugar, etc? Has anyone ever heard this term? 2. Jane Dodson Perry
    3. Richard--> J. Floyd Wine, in LIFE ALONG HOLMAN'S CREEK, refers to Solomon's Lutheran Church, Solomon's, and Solomon's Church. Wine uses Solomon's Lutheran Church most frequently. Rev. William Edward Eisenberg, in THE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN VIRGINIA 1717-1962, uses Solomon's Church, or Solomon's. "The origin of this congregation dates to the year 1793, when Lutheran and German Reformed denominations built jointly a house for public worship, commonly called 'Solomon's Church,' and jointed dedicated the same to the Lord on November 15, 1795". (p. 546) Hope this helps you solve your conundrum on to show possession or not to show possession. 3. Here is a noodle recipe that came from my great grandmother, Susan Peters-Trook, who came from the Forestville area to Indiana. You cut up smoked sausage to about 1/2 inch thick and fry in veggie oil (I think she used lard). In the meantime you cook a batch of thick noodles or those flat dumplings. She made her own but I get them frozen at the grocery store - so much easier! Cut up a small head of cabbage. When the sausage gets brown add the cooked noodles/dumplings and cabbage and stir. Add water to keep from sticking. She use to throw in some butter too. Cook until cabbage is cooked but still crisp. As usual with most of her recipes (other than baking) there are no measurements. I use rivels in soup here in Indiana too. 3. In our house, sloppy ham potpie was different from rivels--no eggs were used in pie crust as with rivels, and it was just called ham pot pie. My grandmother, who was from Fort Valley, left her rivels about 2-3 long, more like noodles. She didn't end up with little balls or rice-sized pieces. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Fuller" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 08, 2008 5:28 AM Subject: Re: [VASHENAN] A recipe for Rivels and Slickers > My search came up with recipe same as what we call sloppy pot pie....Meat > [Ham],broth and 2 inch squares of dough like pie crust. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >
