Don, Here is another item to add to the Shenandoah site under marriages. We found this clipping from the newspaper tucked in the 1938 diary of Mattie Bushong Good. ------------------------------------------------------ The Shenandoah Herald Woodstock, Virginia 30 November 1938 MILLER---SHOWNS Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Showns of New Market, have announced the marriage of their daughter, Miss Rosa Lee Showns, to Mr. Wilbur Smith Miller on Sunday, November 27, 1938, at Moore's Store, Va. The Rev. J. Carson Miller father of the groom was the officiating minister. The marriage was a very quiet one and came as a surprise to the many friends of the young couple. The bride is a popular young woman with many lovely traits of character. The groom is a prominent young farmer and a young man of sterling integrity. Immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Miller left on a motor trip and upon their return will be at home to their friends at the home of the groom's parents, Rev. and Mrs. J. Carson Miller, at Moore's Store, Va., after December 2nd. --------------------------------------------------------- Copied and Submitted by Russell and Gloria Bushong **************Ideas to please picky eaters. How about contacting the newspapers in Russell County? Bev In a message dated 2/24/2008 7:32:59 P.M. I had done a Google search a couple of years ago and saw a transcription for his death record with the reel # but I cannot find my notes. I did not make a file on my computer, like I should have. Hello all, In reading through some excerpts from old Shenandoah County newspapers I found the following from June 15, 1905. Woodstock. Turtle Run to the Front. Turtle Run, or Dark Town, which has been quiet for the past several years, was brought to the front again Monday night by George Boyd and Fred Jones, sons-in-law of Payton Lewis, and a general cutting affray took place. The trouble was the same "old story." Fred hit his wife and George went to her rescue with the butt end of a billiard cue and struck Fred with telling effect, cutting a gash about an inch long over each eye. Mr. Jones used his knife and stabbed George over the head and cut a gash about four inches long on the left side of his face, extending from about an inch behind the ear, through the ear and over the eye. Does anyone know where Turtle Run was/is located? Thanks, Don Silvius Coordinator Shenandoah County GenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/vashenan.html

Sharon, I will get those to you as soon as I get a chance. We've just returned from a vacation and I have some catching up to do first. Pat, Thanks for the offer. My grgrandfather, Marion Bridges, was in the unit but I have the pages about him. I also have other family that I could use pages for: John R. Shaffer, Strather A. Shaffer, Raphael H. Rinker, and Peyton Golliday/Golladay. Also possible family, Philip Dingledine, Peter Dingledine, and Adam Dingledine. There was also an M. J. Bridges that I would like to look at. I really appreciate your offer. Thanks again. Did you have anyone in the Eighth Star from New Market? My Phillipses were in that artillery. Sharon, I have that book and would be happy to copy and send you some pages. Did you have anyone in the Eighth Star from New Market? My Phillipses were in that artillery. Another reminder that Shenandoah County Heritage Day is coming up on Saturday April 12. If you are interested in sharing your information with us, please let me know and I will reserve your table for you. I'll also take advantage of the opportunity to let you know how important it is to use anti-virus software (AVG anti-virus is good and it is free to download - just Google "AVG anti-virus" to find it) and spyware detection software ("Spybot Search and Destroy" and "Ad-Aware" are both free and I use in the two together in my job). Also, back up your data - genealogical and otherwise. I had been fighting a virus called "Virtumondo" for months. I'd get rid of it, it came back, I'd clean it up, and it was back again. I finally reformatted my hard drive and reloaded the operating system, but I had good backups of everything except my old emails and my address book. SO if you sent me something recently, it has gone to data heaven - thanks to Virtumondo. If I didn't add it or change it for you, if you can send it again I'll take care of the correction/addition. Happy safe computing - and I hope to see you on April 12. Don Don Silvius Coordinator Shenandoah County GenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~vashenan/vashenan.html
You can find the link to the digitized County Court of Claims Index at the same URL. _http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/_ (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/) Select:MilitaryRecords And Resources Select: Digitized Military Resources On the upper right select: Images, Indexes, etc. Voila! Look at all the original military records available. For the RW Public Service Claims there is only a name index with county identified. The approved claims are in the minutes of County Court Minutes for 1782-3 which sat as the Court of Claims certificates. County claims certificates/receipts were issued to the citizen by persons authorized to beg/neded supplies. The certificates were received by the Commissioner of Continental Loan office in Richmond. I believe it is this information which was compiled for the publication from which Julia has offered lists for Berkeley, Frederick & Shenandoah Cos., VA The certificates were received by the of Virginia Continental Loan Office Commissioner in Richmond who issued Warrants for the Auditor/State treasurer to pay. Don't ask what happened to the Certificates or Warrants. My husband and I have been looking for them for a few years! Phyllis Vannoy Spiker **************Ideas to please picky eaters.
