Sharon, Have your tried Bridgewater College?
Sharon, I could not find anything of Daniel or Perry Shaver/Shaffer/Shafer. The time period I have access to at the moment is 1878 to 1922 but some of the years and issues are missing. Sooner or later the one that is missing for his obit will hopefully show up. Gloria

Yes, Mattie mentions J. Perry's wife Barbara and Barbara's sister-in-law Mrs. Neff. I can't remember her first name. Is there a website or online search or does one need to physically go there to research? thanks, Patti ----- Original Message ----- From: Chochoruss@aol.com To: vashenan@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, July 12, 2010 8:50 AM Subject: [VASHENAN] The Gospel Messenger - Good source for old obits Listmates, The Gospel Messenger was one of several of the Brethren newspapers who published many obits of many of the Brethren people all over the United States and beyond. They are archived several places. The Virginia people are archived in the Bridgewater Museum, at Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Virginia but there is also a national headquarters and worth checking out if you have Brethren ancestors. We have found many obits in these newspapers. Some are on-line. Gloria- I found the copy of the death notice for Daniel. The copy she made was very poor and we were able to lighten it up some. She got the copy from the county library but did not notice the fact that the actual obit would be in the next paper until later and then could not get back to check the next edition. Here is the info: Death Mr. Daniel Shaeffer, who resided about 21/2 miles northeast of this place, departed this life on last Monday morning; aged 73 years and 26 days. He was buried near the Tunker church, in that neighborhood, in the new cemetery, recently purchased from Mr. John Henry Kagey. Mr. S. was the first person buried in this cemetery. Elder Martin Urner preached the funeral. Obituary next week. Unfortunately, it doesn't show what paper or the date of the notice. However, Daniel died 16 Oct 1882. He lived with his son, James Perry. The house was on Smith Creek Road outside of New Market. Also, the cemetery is Cedar Grove. We have pics of the headstones of both Daniel and Sarah as well as other family members buried there. Again, thanks for your help. One more thing, the birth date of 1755 that we gave for George Keller was given to us by another researcher. I went back to see if I could find a source or something telling me this information came from, but since this was 16 years ago and I was a newbie at the time, (weren't we all at one time) I didn't write down where it came from. So with that said, disregard the birth date as it is NOT written in stone. Gloria
Vashenan Subscribers, We decided to put a little more information on the List about George Keller family of the 1820 Will. We read Wayland's account of the Kellers with much interest. You have to remember that the histories he wrote were oral history but according to Wayland some of the descendants of George Keller married to Barbara Ann Hottel lived in Augusta County and interestingly enough after the death of the father George Keller of the 1820 Will, some of HIS family is living in Augusta County. See below. I am only showing one family for now that of Gabriel Stickley and wife Rebecca Keller. --------------- Possibly the reason that we don't know the maiden name of George Keller's wife is because we can't see the forest for the trees. We found this marriage record and am wondering if this could possibly be them. Since at this point, I don't know all of the birth dates of the children of our George, I cannot say for certain, but my gut instinct tells me this may be them. Shenandoah County Virginia Marriages George Keller married 15 August 1790 to Christina Wilkins. (Could her full name be Catharine Christina Wilkins???? and George called her Catharine? The time frame is certainly correct) ----------------- We would like to say this about this census. In the 1820 census there is more than one George Keller in Shenandoah County so we looked at all of them. One living in Strasburg, one living near Mt. Pleasant closer to Toms Brook, and one living in Columbia Furnace, none of which fit our George Keller. He died the same year as the census but before this one was taken. However, the widow of George Keller of the 1820 Will IS found living in New Market, Virginia. Later some of the family moves to Augusta County and points West. Shenandoah County Virginia Minute Book 1816-1822 12 June 1820 Rachel Keller and Hannah Keller, orphans of George over 14 chose David Crabill as their Guardian. David Keller is appointed guardian of Barbara Keller orphan of George under 14. 1820 Federal Census: Virginia New Market, Shenandoah County Page 141 CATHARINE KELLER {Widow of George} 2 Males 16 and under 26 years of age {Two of the unmarried sons} 2 females 10 and under 16 years of age {Hannah & Barbara} 1 Female 16 and under 26 years of age {Rachel} 1 Female over 45 years of age (Widow Catharine Keller) Son John Keller is also living nearby so he was married. ------------------------ Known Marriages of the Children of George Keller and wife Catharine 1. Elizabeth Keller married 21 April 1806 to Cornelius Dysert/Dysart 2. Rebecca Keller married 18 January 1812 to Gabriel Stickley 3. Sarah Keller married 14 December 1812 to John Kern 4. Catharine Keller married Abraham Crabill (Not the Abraham from Strasburg as he married Rebecca Hottel) 5. Mary Keller married 6 March 1814 to David Crabill 6. Hannah Keller married 13 June 1822 to Jacob Bushong We do not know who these people married but we could speculate with possibilities on some. If anyone has any knowledge, please share! 7. John Keller There were three marriages within the time frame we are researching for possible wives. John Keller could have married Mary Wright in 1812, Margaret Snapp in 1818, or Dorothy Stickley in 1823. 8. Susannah Keller Could find absolutely nothing on her and she might have removed with others when the left the Valley and married somewhere else. Or she could have died after 1820 9. Chocy and Vashenan Subscribers, I am sending you this as more proof that the Andrew Bushong married to Elizabeth Calvert and still alive as a widower in the 1850 census in Shenandoah County, Virginia was born in Virginia and not Pennsylvania. The lineage goes: John and Elizabeth Bushong Andrew and Elizabeth Calvert Jacob and Hannah Keller Andrew and Mary Hisey You will see from this sketch which was written in 1888 when Andrew was still alive and both of his parents died with 12 years of this sketch, so this is probably accurate. Hannah did not die until 1887 so she might have even contributed the information. I'm sure they probably talked about Virginia a lot. The sketch states that both Andrew's father Jacob and his grandfather Andrew were both born in the Old Dominion (Virginia). Jacob Bushong married Hannah Keller 13 June 1822 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. The newspaper article states that they were married by Mr. Leidy, but the family Bible states they were married by Jacob Myers. The Woodstock Herald June 19, 1822 "Married on Thursday the 13th inst. by the Rev. Mr. Leidey, Mr. Jacob Bushong, to Miss Hannah Keller, --all of this county." ---------------- >From "Album and Biographical History of Hillsdale County" written in 1888, Pages 217-218: "ANDREW BUSHONG. While traveling through Hillsdale County, the biographical writers of this ALBUM met with but few active business men who are natives of the county. The vast majority of those who today are tilling the soil and raising stock, or are engaged in business or commercial enterprises, were born without the borders of this county. In presenting this sketch of the career of one of the leading men of Hillsdale County, and a gentleman who is thoroughly representative of its progressive element, we deem it our duty first to advert briefly to the life story of those from whom he derives his origin. Mr. Bushong was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, Sept. 24, 1828, while his father, Jacob Bushong, was born in Shenandoah County, Va., and his grandfather, Andrew Bushong, was also, it is thought, born in the Old Dominion, and was of French ancestry; he followed the occupation of a farmer, and spent his entire life in that State. The father of our subject was reared on the farm in Virginia, and removed thence to Columbiana County, Ohio, where he was among the early settlers of Fairfield Township. He made the toilsome overland journey, bringing his wife with their two children and their worldly effects, their conveyance consisting of a pair of horses and one wagon, which constituted their sleeping apartments at night, while they cooked their food as their horses grazed by the wayside. Upon his arrival Jacob Bushong purchased a tract of timber land, and erecting a pioneer log cabin, he commenced at once to clear and improve a farm. He resided in this place thus employed until 1849, during which time our subject was born in the old log cabin; he then sold out, and accompanied by his wife and six children, started for Williams County. He again found himself a pioneer, and buying a tract of timber land in Jefferson Township, he repeated his experience of pioneer life. On this far, however, twenty acres of land were partially cleared and the regulation log cabin was already built. He found ample room for improvement, however, and lived to see the desire of his heart accomplished, namely, a good farm with suitable buildings and appliances to leave to his children, whom he had fitted not only by giving them such education as the facilities of the day afforded, but by imparting to them those practical lessons which can be learned only in the school of experience. In 1876 he was called to "that land from whose bourne no traveler returns." The mother of our subject, who in her girlhood was Hannah Keller, was born in Shenandoah County, Va. of German ancestry, and surviving her husband several years, died at the home of our subject in 1887, at the advanced age of eighty-one years. Andrew Bushong remained at home with his parents, spending his boyhood in the manner common to the sons of pioneers, until seventeen years of age, when he engaged to learn the potter's trade, and after his marriage he started a pottery on his father's farm, which he carried on five years. He then worked at the carpenter's trade for a period of five years, after which he rented land in Williams County, Ohio, which he operated until about 1863. In September of that year he enlisted in Company F, 182d Ohio Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He went with his regiment to Tennessee, and was on duty principally in that State. He was mustered out with his regiment in July 1865, and receiving his honorable discharge returned to this county and located on his present farm in Amboy Township. The land was still in a state of nature, covered with a growth of heavy timber, and he put upon it a log house, and set to work with a will about its improvement and cultivation. His indomitable industry and perseverance, coupled with his good judgment and frugality, have already borne their legitimate fruit, and he is now in possession of a property which compares favorably with the best in this township. Our subject was united in marriage, Jan. 7, 1852, with Miss Mary Hisey, and to them were born the following children: Elizabeth F., Joseph William, Jacob D., George E., John H., Isabelle, Emma Isadore and Dalla May. Mrs. Bushong was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, April 17, 1828, while her father, Joseph Hisey, was born in Shenandoah County, Va., and removing to Columbiana County, Ohio was among its pioneer settlers. In 1837 he removed to Richland County, and purchasing a farm, engaged in its improvement, and resided there until his death in 1846. His wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Altaffer, was born in Virginia, and was the daughter of George Altaffer. After the death of her husband Mrs. Hisey removed to Williams County, Ohio, and settled in Jefferson Township, upon a tract of land which he had purchased, and there she resided until her decease. Mr. Bushong is a public-spirited man, and is well informed on the topics of the day, though his devotion to his farm and family, and his unostentatious disposition, prevent him from taking an active part in public affairs. In politics his sympathies are with the Republican party." --------------------------- THE BRYAN PRESS Bryan, Williams County, Ohio, Thursday, January 14, 1875 DEATHS "BUSHONG--On the 8th day of January A. He had been suffering from Paralysis, for several years, and in the beginning of November last, was attacked with the third stroke of that dread disease, which left him entirely helpless and finally ended his life. His last days were attended with pain and anguish almost unendenable until death kindly released him from his sufferings. He died in the blessed hope of life eternal, through the mediation of a risen Redeemer." M. --------------------------- THE BRYAN DEMOCRAT Thursday, June 16, 1887 and THE BRYAN PRESS Bryan, Williams County, Ohio, June 16, 1887 DIED BUSHONG--On the 12th day of June 1887, at her residence in Jefferson township, Williams county, Ohio, Hannah Bushong, relict of Jacob Bushong, aged 81 years, 5 months, 28 days. Mother Bushong was born Dec. 14, 1805 in Shenandoah County, Va. She resided there until the year 1825, when, with her husband, she removed to Columbiana county, Ohio, and from thence in the year 1849, they came to Williams county, where they both lived until Death claimed them, the husband having died in 1875, and the wife and mother as above stated.
