He left 4 infant children who were appointed guardians. Guardian for Thomas J. and Catharine Rinker was William Moreland and Guardian for Henry St. John and Jacob George Rinker was Absalom Rinker, brother of Jacob Rinker Jr. deceased. Shenandoah County Virginia Chancery Suit #1844-013 Instituted 13 January 1840 ABSALOM RINKER, GUARDIAN VS. HENRY ST. JOHN RINKER ET AL To the County Court of Shenandoah County in Chancery sitting: Respectfully sheweth to the court your Orator Absalom Rinker, that he is the guardian of Henry St. John Rinker and Jacob George Rinker, orphan children of Jacob Rinker Jr. deceased, That said infants are the joint owners of a house and lot in the town of Woodstock known and distinguished on the plan of said town as Lot No. 83, and now occupied by Hiram Myers. That the said house and lot now rents for about sixty dollars out of which the necessary expenses for keeping the premises in repair must be taken. This house and the other buildings upon the lot are in danger of being destroyed by fire, surrounded as they are by other buildings that are liable to be consumed. Your Orator alleges that the above described premises can be sold for at least sixteen hundred dollars, one half in cash and the residue in three equal annual payments, the interest on which amount will exceed by a large sum the rent which can be obtained, after paying the taxes and for necessary repairs. it is therefore manistfully to the interest of said infants that this property shall be sold and the proceeds safely invested until they respectively arrive to the age of twenty one years. The other real property to which said infants are entitled consists of one twelve acre out lot, two five acre out lots near the town of Woodstock, one in lot in said town containing an acre, and an interest in some detached pieces of land of no great value, besides they have an interest in the land which descends from their half sister Catharine Rinker, deceased. They are also distributees of their father Jacob Rinker deceased and of the said Catharine Rinker deceased, but the amount to which they are heirs, entitled is not precisely known to your Orator, as their estates have not been finally settled up. The amount however, it is believed, will not exceed Two thousand dollars. The persons who would be entitled to the house and lot above described, in the event of the death of said infants are Samuel Rinker, Daniel Fravel and Mary his wife, formerly Mary Rinker and Thomas J. Rinker, the said Samuel and Mary the wife of Daniel Fravel being the brothers and sisters of the whole blood, and Thomas J. Rinker a brother of the half blood and the said infants having no other brothers or sisters or mother living. To the end therefore that the interests of said wards may be promoted, and as the property can only be sold by a decree of a Court of Equity, your Orator prays that Samuel Rinker, Daniel Fravel and Mary his wife, Henry St. John Rinker, Jacob George Rinker and Thomas J. Rinker, the said Henry St. John, Jacob George and Thomas J. being infants, the two former however are the age of FOURTEEN years, may be made defendants to this bill and answer the same upon oath, the adult defendants in proper person, and the infants by Guardian Ad Litem, and the infants over fourteen years also a proper person. That this court will decree the said house and lot in the town of Woodstock to be sold in such manner and upon such terms as may be most conducive to the interest of said wards, and to grant such other and further general relief in the premises as the circumstances of this case requires, and as to the court may seem proper, and your Orator will ever pray and etc. A. Rinker Shenandoah County Court This day the above named Absalom Rinker personally appeared before the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace in and for said county and made oath that the facts stated in the foregoing bill are true to the best of his knowledge and belief. Given under my hand this 13th day of January 1840. PART 1 ----------------- Good Afternoon Vashenan Listmates, One of our big things about researching is being sure that there is a paper trail that backs up what we present. We cross reference everything to make sure the puzzle pieces fit. When we can't find a paper trail, it bothers me and makes me question what is correct and what is not. Everyone leaves a paper trail. The trick is knowing where to find that paper trail. We believe that this research we are presenting is as accurate as it can get. This particular Jacob Rinker Jr. only married twice. First to Mary Fravel and then to Elizabeth Haas. He did not marry a Magdalena as some researchers have reported on Ancestry and Rootsweb. There were several Jacob Rinkers during the same time frame and because these families were so intermarried, people have just mixed them up. Court records helped to straighten out in my mind fact from fiction. We must warn you that there are a few differences with our research and what is in the Rinker book. Always appreciate corrections and any mistakes can be quickly corrected, but please provide some documentation with your correction. Thanks. Gloria --------------- NUMBER SEVEN CHILD OF GEORGE FRAVEL AND ELIZABETH BUSHONG MARY FRAVEL Born: 18 June 1791, Shenandoah County, Virginia, d/o George Fravel Sr. & Elizabeth Bushong Died: 8 June 1821, Shenandoah County, Virginia Burial: St. Pauls Reformed Church Cemetery, Woodstock, Shenandoah Co. The Rinker book states that there were four children born to Jacob Rinker Jr. and first wife Mary Fravel which we have listed below and 2 children born to him and second wife Elizabeth Haas. Our research show differently. There were three, one a set of twins. Read very carefully the Chancery Suit of 1840 below: Absalom Rinker VS Henry St. John Rinker et al. ------------------------- After first wife Mary Fravel's death in 1821, Jacob Rinker Jr then married 22 August 1822 in Shenandoah County, Virginia to Elizabeth Haas and had three more children, one a set of twins. This is based on the 1840 court record that stated two boys of age fourteen years. After the death of Jacob Rinker Jr. his second wife Elizabeth (Haas) Rinker received a Dower from the estate of Jacob Rinker Jr. and that Dower is mentioned in court proceedings in 1853 when Thomas J. Rinker was asking for division of inherited property from his sister Catharine deceased, with David Lambert and it referred to her as still being alive and remarried. She married Hiram Myers as there is a marriage for an Elizabeth Rinker and Hiram Myers for 5 February 1833 in Shenandoah County and the court case reference Exhibit A was 1834. Good Morning Listmates, Is it hot enough for everyone. Dreaming of Fall already! Can someone look in Judy Stickley's book "Someone You Knew" and tell me if there is an obit listed for Thomas J. Rinker there? He would have died after 1880. I'm not sure he died in Shenandoah County but hoping that the newspaper might have picked it up anyway. Thanks, Gloria B.

Shea, I'm interested in one of the families you have on your heritage- files.com site. It starts with: Johannes Rudolf Bachmann, b. 3 Jul 1659, Canton, Zurich, Switzerland, d. 10 Nov 1735. This is a direct ancestor of mine, and I'd be interested in your sources for this information. Thanks for any information you can provide. Shae ________________________________ From: Shae <blueskygyrl@yahoo.com> To: vashenan@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, July 9, 2010 4:25:50 PM Subject: [VASHENAN] Research Project I have an ongoing research project in a private tree on ancestry.com, which began with husband's line and has since expanded to include neighboring families and various intermarried lines. Parts of it are well researched; others are in various stages from speculative to probable and on up the scale. Many of the family names often discussed are included within, so I thought I would extend an invitation to anyone who would like to be given access. Any corrections or additions are certainly welcome, and I am happy to share whatever I have. Bear in mind, it *is* a work in progress. If you'd like access, send me an email privately to genealogist@heratage-files.com and I will wave the magic wand. I also have parts of this research on a public site at http://genealogy.heritage-files.com - this is also prone to errors during the ongoing research. One thing I spend considerable time on is trying to connect previously unconnected (as far as I am aware) families using the 1860 census, just working at connecting probable dots. Thanks, all, for your continued informative posts. This is a wonderful list. I live in Maurertown, between Toms Brook and Woodstock, so if anyone needs local sites or cemeteries photographed, I will take requests and do them as time allows. Shae
Okay everyone, I should know better at my age to do something from memory. Years ago, I could do it but not anymore! Sorry. It isn't the Brethren newspapers that are on-line but the Mennonite newspapers called The Gospel Herald. Here is the link below. You might be surprised what you might find. But the Brethren did put out different newspapers at different times and they are archived in Washington County, Pennsylvania and Bridgewater College in Virginia to just name a few. Years ago when I was a "newbie" at researching, Russell and I were in the Courthouse at Woodstock hand copying court records and I wrote the following down. Next time someone goes to the courthouse at Woodstock, would you verify that this record was for 10 November 1851 on page 202? Thanks, Gloria ------------------------ Shenandoah County Virginia Minute Book 10 November 1851, Page 202 Ordered that Henry Bushong, George Rye, Jacob Burner, and Benjamin Hoover or any three of them being to appraise estate of Daniel Hottel. ----------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
Oh I hope they haven't taken it off line. So many things are going to paid sites. I'll see if I still have it book marked as that was quite a while ago. Gloria
Please post the online links to the Gospel Messenger. A quick search did not identify any Brethren Church names. Thanks. Phyllis Vannoy Spiker
Patti, What names are you looking for? Gloria
Even if a Bushong did not marry directly into your family, the Bushong family and the Shaver/Shaffer/Shafer families were close friends. Mattie Bushong Good, as I told you, mentions them being at her home for dinner many times. Gloria
Listmates, The Gospel Messenger was one of several of the Brethren newspapers who published many obits of many of the Brethren people all over the United States and beyond. They are archived several places. The Virginia people are archived in the Bridgewater Museum, at Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Virginia but there is also a national headquarters and worth checking out if you have Brethren ancestors. We have found many obits in these newspapers. Some are on-line. Gloria
