RADFORD, Va. Monnie Starnes Nelson, 97, formerly of Scott County, Va. died Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Beth Nelson. Her parents were Oscar and Alice Bond Starnes of Scott County, Va. She retired from St. Albans Hospital where she worked as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). She was known as Gege by the children in the family and their friends. She was noted for her great love and devotion to her family , grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who spent many happy and nurturing hours in her care. Monnie and Pat were members of Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Hascue Nelson; son, Jack Nelson; brothers, Grady and Sam Starnes; and sister, Laura S. Peters. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Beth Nelson; grandchildren, Judy Nelson, Jeanie and husband Mike Anderson, Betty and husband Dave Whitley; great-grandchildren, Jon Anderson, Sydney and husband David Lawson, Travis Whitley, and Carter Whitley; great-great-grandchildren, Sawyer and Olivia Beth Lawson, all of Pulaski County; nephews and their families, Harold Starnes, Fort Blackmore, Va., Sam Starnes, Salt Lake City, Utah., Tom Starnes, Radford, Don Starnes, Smithville, Missouri, and O.H. Peters, Greeneville, Tenn.; nieces and their families, Kathleen Starnes Darnell, Gate City, Va., and Louise Teenie Starnes Moscoe, Fla.; a number of cherished children of deceased nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Gaye Bond Bowen. Calling hours will be from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday at DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford, Va.. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Warren Stewart officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Beth C.
