Virginia Star Dec. 6, 2000 page 5 Daniel Boone Trail Marker Restored Carters Fort Chapter honored Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kern of Duffield for recovering and restoring a historical mark that marks the famous Daniel Boone Trail which was originally placed in Duffield by the Virginia Daughters prior to 1932. The marker was partially buried with about one foot protruding out of the ground. The Kern family became concerned a historical marker was in such bad state of repairs and wanted to restore it. Seeking the help and support of family members, friends, highway department and DAR members, they began restoration of the marker and erection of the monument at their own expense. Those honored at the rededication ceremony were Fred and Fay Kern, Jerry Tate (who furnished the stone and labor), Jeff Kern, Derick and Melinda Kern, David and Colleen Hurd, Taryn Hurd, Dan and Rose Ketly, Carl Ketly, Benny Spivey, Dole Bishop and Samuel Young. The restored monument sits about 1000 feet south of it's original location. The monument is located at the highway intersection of Route 856 and US 23 at Duffield.
