Mary, Carol is NOT related to the SLAGLE family of Wayne Co., KY. Carol as well as I are related to Henry SLAGLE, b. 1765, m. Christina KELCHNER, of Shenandoah, Wythe, Washington, and Scott Cos., VA, Sullivan Co., TN, and also lived in NC for several years. I am Administrator of the SLAGLE Y-DNA Project through Family Tree DNA. These are the results so far. The above Henry SLAGLE and Frederick SLAGLE of Rowan, Lincoln, & Yancey Co., NC, have a common ancestor. One participant from Henry SLAGLE and one participant from Frederick SLAGLE have upgraded to a 37-marker Y-DNA Test. The Wayne Co., KY, SLAGLE line is believed to be descended from Peter SLAGLE of Rowan Co., NC, through son John SLAGLE. Son Peter was also in Wayne Co., KY, and then went on to Scott Co., IL. Son Abraham left Rowan Co., NC and went to Wythe Co., VA, in 1808-09. A descendant of son Abraham is a participant in the SLAGLE Y-DNA Project. This descendant was a perfect 25/25 marker Y-DNA match with several participants who are descended from John Christian SCHLEGEL, b. abt 1710, of Berks Co., PA. Peter may in fact be a son of Johann Christian SCHLEGEL who disappeared from the Berks Co., PA records after 1774. The participant who is descended from Peter SLAGLE through son Abraham and one of the participants who is descended from John Christian SCHLEGEL have upgraded to a 37-marker Y-DNA test. Time Frame of the Common Ancestor - Y-DNA - 12 markers - 25 markers - 37 marker tests. The 12/12 match is 50% probability is 14 generations and 90% probability is 48 generations. The 25/25 match is 50% probability is 7 generations and 90% probability is 23 generations. A 37/37 match, the time frame of the Common Ancestor at 50% probability is 4.7 generations and 90% probability is 16 generations. The SLAGLE Y-DNA Project was established to determine the common ancestors of the early SLAGLE families living in Colonial America. If your SLAGLE family has been in the U.S. by or prior to the Revolutionary War and you are a direct SLAGLE male descendant, you are invited to participate. Some of the variations of the name of SLAGLE are SLAGGLE, SLAGEL, SLAGLEY, SCHLEGEL, SCHLOEGEL. Diane Slagle Sheridan

I suggest you contact the Bristol newspaper. They may have some archives of the story. I remember when growing up there was an article about him when he was still alive. Later, when he died, they did quite a piece on him. One or both of these particular editions had pictures. I would also contact the Sons of the Confederacy to see what local organization they have around the area. They might have some things in their files, too. I do remember well that he was celebrated at the last living Confederate soldier and had the honorary title of General, although I think he was no more than a Private during the war. However, that is a worthy honor. I want to think he lived up around Saltville and their local paper might also have some information. Granny Cuma Smith was only married one time and that was to John A Taylor between 1934 and 1936. Cuma's daughter Orprah was the one married to William Burton Smith. They were my grand aunt and grand uncle. Cuz Helen passed away little over a year ago. All of Cuma's children were illegitimate. They were Garland, Orprah, Stella, Mima and baby girl who died in 1906. When I was in Scott Co VA last fall I spent quite a bit of time at Gate City Court House and have located some census records. What reunion, this is first I've heard of it? Please send me info on that as well. Cuz Helen for several years prior to her death gave me quite a bit that she had from Burt and Orprah's Bible. I believe that what I worked up from everything and sent her was passed on to either Cotton or Shorty when she died. They haven't gotten back to at all with any updates but Helen did tell me their were some updates that was needed. She died before she could give that to me. We are indeed in same line. I was wondering where you disappeared to. My sister periodically checks to see if you are back online as well. Welcome back. Hi Cuz, just a short note about Cuma Smith. Her first husband was Burton William Smith (which is in my line). Their children were: John Lloyd, Opal Lee, Helen Louise,Herbert Ward (Cotton), William Howard (Shorty),Ralph Eugene, and Robert Dean. I have all of their children and dates if you need any of them. Are you going to the reunion in VA this summer. Let me know. Vicki > Is this the same John Cross whose 2nd marriage was to Cuma A Smith? If so I can > help with some info. I am also interested in the Nunn Line. Migration pattern for this family appears to be Carolinas>NorthCarolina>Virginia>Tennessee>Texas Sully Reeves Benton m. Betty Jones Nunn. Their child Mattie McDowell Benton m. Thera Adolphus Richardson. Their child Rial Carl Richardson m. Mabel Radford. Thank you for any information you may have. I have information on the Nunn line from before 1700 that I will be glad to give to anyone interested. William was married to Dorothy Elizabeth (Betsy) Groom(e) and I'm not sure at this time, but I think some of her brothers may also have come to Scott County. William & Betsy's son, Zachariah Benton, also came to Scott County about the same time. Zachariah's wife was Mary Nunn. I know absolutely nothing about her other than her name, so if anyone has Nunns from Scott County in the 1840s and 1850s, I'd love to make contact with you. > > Thanks!! > Juli > > > > ==== VASCOTT Mailing List ==== > VAScott admin: listpig@earthlink.net > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial.
