Would appreciate help from anyone researching this family. I don't know his death date but would be interested to know who has information on him. Most of the information that I have on my 4th great grandfather, William Daugherty, is from a copy of a typewritten sheet that was sent to me. It says that the data is "from the papers of C.D. Vermillion". It gives the birthdate and place of William and names his children. But they didn't know where the information came from. I'd like to know who has those papers. William was the brother of James "the hatter" Daugherty of Scott Co. Thanks, Rob Dougherty

    3. Lori, I think people should be aware of just how much information they give out to companies when they send in GEDCOMs. The con artist are so happy to see new ones submitted. Yes, It's so nice to share, but be very careful, I for one enjoy sharing with others, I try to be careful, but I do realize I slip at times as well. Now Family Tree Maker is what I use and in this program one can personalize the livings information. I don't know about the other programs, I haven't used any other, but I'm sure they would have this opposition as well. Genealogy is rated one of the top hobbies, just be careful and let's enjoy our hobby. Jean Brand 2254 W. Gettysburg Fresno, CA 93705 [email protected] & [email protected]

    3. Jean, don't think that having the incorrect information is going to save you and/or your mother from trouble. I had a co-worker that was obtaining SS#'s on employees and was able to get credit cards just with their name, address, and social security number. She was guessing on the birthdays. My husband and I are very careful about letting our SS# float around, so we were one of the few that she did not have credit cards on. We had an employee that went to the police trying to press charges. She was told that there was nothing she could do because the credit card company was the one that had been frauded, not her. My recommendation is to be very careful about giving your ss# to anyone or letting it be on anything. Our state started using your SS# as your driver's license number several years ago unless you object. I opted out of that right away. My husband is a truck driver which requires you by law to use your SS# on your CDL license, but we were able to find a loophole in the law so he could opt out of that also. Your SS# is private, and I believe legally is not to be used by companies as identification purposes. At 08:46 AM 10/14/00, you wrote: >I told her fine, but she had my mother name incorrect and her birthdate was >so n so, the gal change it really fast, stating she wanted all her >information totally correct...... 3. Kelly, What's the e-mail address for the submitter?? > I recently discovered a .ged file on ancestry.com that contains 9,376 > names...part of the file contains my grandfather, his parents and > siblings...all the way down to me. (Wild to see myself and my own young kids) Have you consider that the person submitting the GED was jumped for submitting the living person data? I was talking with a cousin who is a Sgt of Detective here in CA., he was telling me, the worse thing anyone can do is submit files with personal information for any living person. According to him, the con artist hits those files hard and runs scams and even hit persons bank accounts, opens credit card in that name. Then the credit companies run you down, hounding at your door to pay up or disgrace your credit, etc. Well, after hearing this I did a bit of research myself into the Federal Lien Law and it stated something like this (which I used and it does work)," the person signing the application, no matter what name he or she uses is the person responsible for that debt." Someone had 7 e-mail addresses charging in my name to a credit card using my name, after refusing to pay that card, I contacted the companies and after hearing what all they were going to do to me, I fell back on this Federal Law and demanding a copy of the application and send them the required signature for myself, only a few weeks later I recd from the companies, letters stating they had removed all if from my credit reports and turned it over to the FBI. I had already reported it to the FBI. So one might consider being very careful submitting to the different organizations any GEDCOM for any family history with information for any living person in their files. The scam artist are out there watching....and waiting... for their chance!!!!!!! Just the other day, I saw my mother listed and I requested the submitter to removed her name she said, "NO", so I told her fine, but she had my mother name incorrect and her birthdate was so n so, the gal change it really fast, stating she wanted all her information totally correct...... I was happy with the new incorrect information she had relpaced. Now I will step down from my soap box and get on with genealogy....... Jean Brand 2254 W. 1. [VASCOTT-] Stephen-Caleb Osborne discussions
    2. This is in regard to discussion between some of the members of this list about whether the Stephen who married Comfort Langham (Lanham) was the son of Caleb Osborne. of Rowan Co. N.C. I had believed that the info below stated that the Stephen in the Article was son of Caleb, but apparently I just thought that since he was in Rowan Co where Caleb lived and died that he was naturally the son of Caleb. I will try to get the PEnsion records from Archives for this Stephen. Maybe it will gi ve his parents. Wadene Bennett Some researchers believe that this Stephen is the one who married Comfort Lanham and moved to Scott County, Va. I believe that the Stephen who married Comfort Lanham is the son of Ephraim Osborne, brother or cousin to Caleb. I found the following item in the publication "The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal" Vol. IV #2 May 1978. page 128 " OSBORN, STEPHEN., aged 64 years, resident of Rowan County. Claim for Federal Pension under Act of 1818, Rowan County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, August Term 1819. HE enlisted at Stony Hill, Somerset County, NEw Jersey, in Capt. HOWEL'S Company of the 1st NEw Jersey Regiment. HE continued in regular service for over three years until January 1781, when he was discharged at Pompton, New Jersey by John N. CUMMINS, Commander of the 1st Jersey Regiment. He fought at the Battle of Short Hills, where he received a thigh wound, and the battles on Long Island and at White Plains. HE "is now in moderate circumstances not being worth more than the value of six hundred dollars...and seeing that he is now an invalid decrepid old man, with a family to support - he calls upon the bounty of his country for ...support.." /s/ Stephen (P) Osborn Affidavit of Levi KINNAMAN claims that "he has been acquainted with Stephen OSBORN for some years, that the said Stephen OSBORN has the reputation of being an upright - honest - man in his neighborhood, that he knows the said .. (OSBORN) .. to be in indigent circumstances.." /s/ LEVI (x) KINNAMAN Affidavit of Jonathan JONES states information similar to the above affidavit of Levi KINNAMAN. /s/ Jonathan (x) JONES. We need to send off for his pension records to see if there is any mention of his parents.

    1. [VASCOTT-] William Pace Grave Marker
    2. Some of you may want to check the 14 Oct 2000 Kingsport Times-News item below shown below. Only thing I see wrong with the Item is the location is not in Haynes Valley but that is close enough. The URL is www.timesnews.net Jim Brown Scott Revolutionary War veteran honored with new grave marker Fred Thrasher of the Abingdon chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution parades the colors at Jones Cemetery in Scott County. Ken Murray by KEVIN CASTLE YUMA — The playing of “Taps’’ echoed through the fall-painted mountains of Haynes Valley as William Pace’s ancestors gathered to say “thank you” from a grateful nation. Sons of the American Revolution chapters of Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, and Alabama converged at the Jones Family Cemetery Friday to honor Pace, who was one of then-Gen. George Washington’s elite troopers during the Revolutionary War. According to Bill Bellomy, president of the S.A.R.’s Texas chapter and Pace’s great-great-great-grandson, the war patriot was one of Washington’s hand-picked Life Guards, or bodyguards, who protected the general in all situations and stood guard outside his various battlefield headquarters. Pace became a member of the 14th Regiment of the Virginia Continental Army at the age of 31, later on becoming one of 47 Life Guards for Washington. At the end of the war, Pace was one of only four of the guards remaining. Bellomy also noted during the ceremony that Pace once camped out behind Independence Hall in Philadelphia and is one of the only documented soldiers to be on the soldier roll at Valley Forge, Pa. Pace was also involved in some of the war’s historic battles, including engagements at Brandywine and Germantown, Pa., Monmouth, N.J., and Yorktown, Va. He later moved to Scott County from Fluvanna County, passing away at the age of 70 in 1815, according to Bellomy. “I am a descendant of a person who made a difference, who kept one of the nation’s greatest leaders alive. As a result of that, we have a nation that is unlike any other,’’ said Bellomy. “With the events in Yemen that took the lives of American soldiers recently, it makes you think of the price some people will pay to keep our country safe. Events like those are tragic, but I hope they bring people in our nation closer together.’’ The new marker was placed on the gravesite Friday morning and formally dedicated during the ceremony. Bellomy said that weather and time had taken its toll on the original shale marker. The modern concrete marker bears these words: IN MEMORY OFWILLIAM PACE SGT. CONTINENTAL ARMY GEORGE WASHINGTON’S LIFE GUARD 1745 — 1815 The Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 3382 of Kingsport presented the colors of America for the ceremony.
