    1. [VASCOTT-] Re: frazier murders
    2. Jean Brand
    3. Vicki, Mine is Adelina Barnett and Joshua Daniel Frazier connection. Adeline was a sister to my John Barnett, so guess that makes us cousins somewhere down the road!. Shirley and I have been beating the bushes so to speak about these murders, Jean Pierson another cousin is digging more at the court house for more records. The murders were over land dispute. Eli Barnett (brother to Adeline) was given some land by James Barnett,Jr, upon his death as the story goes (and some fact have been found on this story) Eli died and left his wife Permila Lyons his land, she died 4-4-1920, before her death, two Frazier boys (her nephews by marriage)got her to sign over the land, telling her that she had to file something at the court house there at Gate City, she made her mark (she could read nor write) on the deed and they took it to Gate City and had their names or Frazier name placed on the deed. After her death her son Thomas Barnett's son John R. Barnett started handling thing for his father, only to learn they had been "cheated " out of his grandmother's land by two of his cousins. The land was where James Barnett,Jr had his home and his children where born (one can stand on the porch of James "Bo" Berry home (descendand of Margaret Peggy Barnett)sister to Eli Barnett) and see the spot where the murder happened. Anyhow, John found the two Frazier cousins (descendants of Aeline Barnett and Josuha Danile Frazier) shot them with a shot gun, he was arested and went to prison for 20 years for the murder(s). It is unclearn in the court papers if he murdered one or both of them. When I was back in Virginia last year having dinner at Bo and Tammy's, Bo started telling me the story, being one that can't leave a stone unturned, I met with Jean Pierson earlier that day(from Sarah Elizabeth Barnett and James Baxter Pierson line) Sarah was a sister to my John, Adeline, Margaret and Eli Barnett) called and asked her to search for the records. She found the some of the court records and since we all have gone over this murder(s) with a fine tooth comb, learning more each time. Now we do know forsure Creed and Wiley Frazier were the ones that John found on the Barnett land. Now I have found another couple Creed Fraziers that has caused some confliction in my personal files. One being a Sheriff Creed Frazier, also related to the Barnetts. Once I have learn the full facts and lineages I'll sure let you know. Now Norman "Mac" Mcnutt is going to Gate City to meet up with Jean Pierson, they plan to climb to the (guess you would call it the tower) pull out those records and copy for me. They are also going to pull the Frazier death recrds for that time frame, checking to see just who where their parents, etc. that should give the proof we all are wanting to know. Now a few years ago the Frazier's lost that peice of land to back taxes and Bo and his brother bought the land on the steps of the court house there in Gate City, Scott Co., VA. Now when I was back there I heard just about the same story from other cousins, seems all I heard was about the muder(s), land dispute and bad feelings, so now you know the story as I have been told by different ones in e-mails and snail letters from VA. Didn't mean to write you a book, sorry about that. Jean Brand 2254 W. 3. I just spoke with Jean Pierson of Weber City, VA, it was Creed and Wiley Frazier (brothers) who was shot and murders by John Barnett. Now the Creed Frazier I have is my file with a family is actually the family for the Sheriff Creed Frazier and not the Creed Frazier who was the son Charles Frazier, grandson of Adeline Barnett and Joshua Daniel Fraizer. 3. For those of you searching the George Washington Johnston/Johnson line, that was in Washington, Lee, Scott Counties, VA for awhile, many of his descendants including himself went into Rockcastle Co., Kentucky, around the Brodhead area. Some went onto Taney Co., MO and others went into Indian Territory, some into now Garvin Co., Ok. I inherited 3 of the descendants of George Washington Johnston/Johnson bibles, a few antiques, quilts and many old family pictures from my grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Malicoat Davis. (the bibles were John Barnett and Elizabeth A. Johnston, my grandmothers and one of my favorite aunt). My grandmother's bible was well documented (which I kept), John's bible is falling apart (which I gave to another first cousin,Sara Allen) and I gave another first cousin, Dale Davis our aunt's bible. John Barnett's old log cabin was moved and being restored, turning it into a museum at Renfo Valley, Rockcastle Co., KY, which we are thinking about donating some of the family items to later on. Jerry Hayes is the director and he has stated he would have a special glass case made for the bible if we elect to donate it. My grandmother was born in that cabin. Just thought I'd pass this onto you all. Jean Brand 2254 W. Gettysburg Fresno, CA 93705 [email protected] & [email protected]

The marriage license in 1907 of my grandparents E. P. Bledsoe & Victoria Sprinkle show his mother as Julina and Victoria's mother as Lena (should be Lina). In court papers of Lee County, dated March 31, 1975 my great grandmother's name appears as Juline Bledsoe. It also states her death as abt 1938. These papers were to my Mother, Edith Gertrude Bledsoe Harris. They were for the purpose of settling her grandparents land. Notes for James Campbell Johnston: Johnstons Among First Settlers At Big Branch Powell Valley News Wednesday May 27, 1992 Capture: First Settlers James C. and Amandy Johnston were said to have been among the first settlers on Big Branch in the St. Charles Community. Caputre: The Baby Parlee Wallen was said to have been the baby that Amandy Johnston carried on her back to locate a homesite on Big Branch with her husband James C. Johnston. Etta Green, former correspondent for Powell Valley News, wrote in the August 12, 1965 edition the following: "There's a place up the mountain way about a couple of miles southwest of St. Charles known as Big Branch. It gets it's name from a big stream of water that comes dashing and splashing in a big way over it's rocky course. It seems that in this section at anytime of the season nature does her best landscaping, but more especially in the springtime when new fronds in the weeping willows reach down to the water's surface; and up on the hills rising high on either side; where the dogwood, red bud and other wild trees burst into bloom. There's some pretty little homes along both sides of the stream with level space enough for lawns, gardens and some small orchards. There's a rural store and upon the hillsides some small wagon mines. But the main story is this: Way back in pioneer days there was only Big Branch bordered on either side by underbrush and trees. Some early settlers seeking a place for a new home plodded their way through snow for a considerable distance up the branch, sometimes walking, sometimes crawling through the mass of growing things. The woman (Amandy Johnston) carried a baby on her back, it's said. At least they found a place level and wide enough to locate. They improvised a shelter until a house could be built, thus the attractive community of Big Branch got underway. The baby grew up and married; became a great-great grandmother, and now if any of the descendants still live in the community they are the fifth generation. Etta R. Bowens, 61, of Big Branch in the St. Charles community, said last week that descendants of some of those early pioneers do remain on Big Branch. "I'm still here", she said. She and her husband, Elmer, 70, (retired coal miner- she retired sewing machine operator), have three children and nine grandchildren. One son and daughter and two adult grandchildren continue to make their homes on Big Branch. Parlee Wallen was Mrs. Bowens' grandmother, the baby of whom Etta Green wrote in 1965, and the Johnstons were her great-grandparents. James C. Johnston was born in August 1845 and died March 31, 1930/ His wife, Amandy was born June 27, 1842 and died July 2, 1930. Mrs. Bowens said the area was a complete wilderness when her ancestors came looking for a stream and a spring of water. In her spare time now, Mrs. Bowens makes dolls and her husband makes airplanes using discarded pop bottles. They display these and other crafts at local craft shows." The marriage license in 1907 of my grandparents E. 1. [VASCOTT-] Re: Ford/ Patricia
    2. Hi, I don't know about your Ford ancestor's parents, but I may have a clue. While researching my husband's Chastains I discovered that some Fords were originally Faures. To see what I am talking about, open the Google search engine http://www.google.com and then type this into the box: Ford AND Faure You will get a lot of people whose names changed and you can see from what areas they came. It would probably work with other search engines just as well. Good luck. Kay

    1. Re: [VASCOTT-] Fwd: Sprinkle family of Scott County, VA
    2. Nancy, I don't have a Polly Neeley. My connection is my grandmother, Victoria Sprinkle's sister, Emma Lee Sprinkle married William Joseph Neeley. (a redhead) with lots of redheaded children. I'll also put this on the list and someone may connect that would have a link to your Polly Neeley and correct any of my dates that need it. Mary William Joseph Neeley (b) May 21, 1876 (d) March 21, 1922 married Dec. 20, 1898 to Emma Lee Sprinkle (b) March 21, 1875, Fairview, Scott County, VA (on Sun.) (d) February 7, 1931, VA (Sat.) THEIR CHILDREN: (birth & death dates need another verifying source) I have old letters of my Mama's (Edith G. Bledsoe) where she corresponded with these cousins. She missed them & the mountains dearly when we moved to Texas in 1945. She did get to visit a few time before she passed away in 1979. I treasure the wealth of information in her letters. She was a great communicator. I sure wish I had been a better listener & had access to the ones she wrote to them. I received the birthdates on the Neeley children, through the son of Mama's Uncle John Sprinkle, getting his information from Virginia Neeley. (the abt dates are my own). (1) George Neeley abt 1899 (have a 1900 Sprinkle family photo of all (12) Sprinkle children & one spouse, William Neeley holding his child, presumably, George). (no other info. on George). (2) Parolee Neeley (b) October 7, 1901 in Pennington Gap, VA. She married after my Mama, because she was a witness on their marriage license, when my parents eloped to TN to get married in 1926 & signed in her maiden name. She & my Mama were close. I have a little graduation book of Parolee's which Mama kept in her trunk of treasures. It is dated 1924, so I was believing her birthdate was closer to Mama (Edith Bledsoe) herself born in 1910. I was also told by Kathleen Wells Goode Dickenson (another cousin of Mama's) that in 1997, Parolee was 90 years old. Parolee married Carson C. Hensley (b) September 18, 1904 (d) July 1983 in Big Stone Gap, Wise, VA. I believe they had four sons. (3) Alverta Neeley (b) October 27, 1903 in Fairview, Scott, VA (d) August 26, 1988 Big Stone Gap, Wise, Va. She married (abt. 1919) William (Bill) R. Holland (b) (abt. 1899). and they had a son William (Bill) Holland, Jr. (b) (abt. 1920). (4) Edna Gertrude Neeley (b) December 5, 1907 married E. Truman Ely ( I found an Edna Ely in the SS death search (b) May 25 1911 (d) Mar 27 1996 and the last address given as Pennington Gap, Lee, VA 24277) could this be same person with correction on birth date?) (5) Vera Mae Neeley (b) June 18 1910, Fairview, Scott, VA (d) January 1996 in Big Stone Gap, Wise County, VA (she had moved back from Colorado after her 3rd husband, Ben died). When I was a child I remember her living in one part of the same house as my Aunt Virgie Sprinkle Wells. I guess it was like a big duplex with a big front porch. I know she had several redheaded children. I know they all laughed the way I always mashed the white bread in my hand, before I ate it, when (Aunt Mae, as I called her) gave it to me. Her first husband was Dick Barker and I believe she married him twice. Their children: Iris Barker (b) abt 1926. I don't know who she married, but they had a son name Lewis (b) abt. 1946 (d) abt 1971 in FL (I was told he was drag racing when killed). Iris Barker also had a daughter named Brenda (b) abt. 1948 Unknown Son Barker Ronnie Barker Dannie Barker Jerry Barker husband 2 for Vera Mae Neeley Barker was Loren K. Smith ( Mama got cards from CO). husband 3 for Vera Mae Neeley Barker Smith was Ben Chatfield in the 1970's. Mama got mail from Colorado & during her last days in 1979, I spoke with each on the phone, briefly. Ben died abt 1989. (6) Virginia Neeley (b) October 27, 1918 She is married to John Gunter or Guntner.

    1. [VASCOTT-] PLEASE HELP
    2. I am new to this list and needs some real help. Until yesterday I was wondering if my great grandmother was an alien from Mars or some unknown galaxy. Seriously I knew she was but from documentation I have received she was born in four different states and in three decades. New found information had my great grandmother ELLEN F. FORD being born May 1856 in Virginia. Now that I know she didn't just pop into this world or come on a flying saucer I am looking for information on her family, parents, and siblings. If you have Ford info please check for her. Also I need a CENSUS look up for 1860 and 1870. She married in April 1872 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Any help is greatly appreciated. If you look for her in census records you have access to please let me know where you looked so I will know at least where she is not at in Virginia. Thanks you for you help. Patricia
