Jean, Yes, you may. Was this my reply to Mary Jo (mjdailey(pen.k12va.us (Mary Jo Dailey) ? She also wrote today, seeking info on where Eliza Riley was born or names of her siblings or other children? I gave your name as my source, OK? Mary
Hi Jean, Thank you for your information on the ancestors of my g-grandfather, James Bledsoe (b) 1855 (d) March 13, 1933, St. Charles, Lee, VA. My mother, Edith G. Bledsoe visited his gravesite, on the homeplace in 1975 & 1977. Upon reading the file that I received from you 11/10, I gasped when I saw that Julia A. Johnston died three months after her marriage?? Exhaled it, when I backed up to read date was too early to count mine off, as this one was born, 1819, the daughter of Benjamin Johnston and Mary Crabtree. Hopefully the Juline (Julia) Johnson/Johnston married to my g-grandfather, James Bledsoe is still the one in your line. On her son, E.P. Bledsoe's marriage license of Nov. 11, 1907 her name is listed as Julina, on an old receipt, dated 4/28/1911, it's written Jelinia Bledsoe. Listed on an, In Chancery filed 31 day of March, 1975 in the clerk's office of the Circuit Court of Lee County, VA, lists her name as, Juline Bledsoe, along with her husband, James Bledsoe. This, regarding the settling of the homeplace, was sent to my Mother, by the Arthur T. Burchette, Clerk, Circuit Court, Lee County, Jonesville, Virginia and by the Law offices of Sergent and Lewis in Pennington Gap, VA. It states that James & Juline Bledsoe, during their lifetime had six children, Jeff Bledsoe, a son; Andrew Bledsoe, a son; Park Bledsoe, a son; Elizabeth Margaret Vandergriff, a daughter; William Bledsoe, a son; Phronie Wells, a daughter. This was so, Elizabeth's daughter, Estelle & husband, Harold Fleenor could purchase the land, on which they had been living and taking care of many years. It was in the Pocket Community and on the waters of Rock Lick Branch, in the Rocky Station Magisterial District of Lee County, Virginia, containing 45 acres. Listed in deed of record in the Clerk's Office of Lee County, Virginia, in Deed Book 22, page 422. Seven of the acres was already conveyed to T. J. Phillips (I believe he was Elizabeth's 1st husband & father of her daughter, Estelle Phillips Fleenor) by a deed dated March 25, 1916 and recorded in the Clerk's Office of Lee County, Virginia, in Deed Book 97, page 20. Having said this on the name of Juline Johnson, this is what I have going down in their line. Jean, I better get this on to you. I have more on Evan Parkey Bledsoe's family with his first wife, I'll send on seperate posting. He was awarded custody of their two small children in the ugly divorce proceedings. His only son, Dave Bledsoe, married Birdie Rachel Harris, the sister of my father, Vivian Harris who happens to be the husband of his half sister, Edith G. Bledsoe. Therefore I have twelve double (half) cousins or something like that. The daughter in that union, Ollie Sophronie, never had children. I guess I should have added Bledsoe on the subject, but didn't want you to miss it. Mary,
Joyce, Have you been in contact with Hannah Baker ( was born Scott Co., VA and parents Martin W. Dishner & Nannie Mae Dinsmore. Hannah married Elmer Baker 8-02-1930 and raised two boys) 14635 1/2 Brier Hill Rd Bainbridge, OH 45612 Her grandparents were: William Baker born Rogersville, TN then moved to Scott Co., VA and married Sarah Walker and they had 8 children. Does this ring any bells????? You might want to check the spelling of Hartsock as maybe check for Hertzog (German name). The Hartsocks came to the American Colonies in 1720s. Jean
Joyce Smith, After checking further into your Baker line, does the surname Malicoat/Mallicoat ring any bells or the surname Durham? I have Bakers tieing into my line down in Rockcastle Co., KY and the Bakers were from VA.... your Sara E. Baker married John Hartsock, I found the surname Hartsock in my files and here's what I have, which is very little. Descendants of Kelly Wheeler Pierson Generation No. 1 1. Good morning List, I'm back in God's Country and a cousin loan me many more old family pictures to scan for Pat's photo site. So Pat are you ready or do you wish I hold up awhile? Yesterday my great nephew (2yrs old) spent the day with me, he never would let anyone take his picture, finally talked Jas into letting me take his, when I loaded them onto my computer, he went wild seeing himself. Then I showed him Pat's photo site, pointing out his g-g-g-g-grandparents, all at once he jumped off my lap, ran to my mother and pulled her in to see grannys and papas. I had to print him out a couple to take home. Seeing Pat's photos made his day, he got to set on my lap and point at the different pictures and not be told, "don't touch". Now all he wants me to do is take his picture...... Everytime I'm back in Fresno, he has to come over and spent the day with me. Jas baby sister is the next to the youngest in my family line and I'll send Pat a photo to all to her site. Just wanted to say hi and I'm back. Get ready for more pictures. Jean
Robert, I'm slow, but I'm back. Thanks for everyones patience & their replies. Sorry, I'm no help with James Johnson or Sturgill. I'm just beginning on Johnson. Should I run across either, I'll certainly pass it on to you. Jean Brand seems to be the one with lots of information on Johnson/Johnston. The information she sent to me & the list 11/1/00 has a James Campbell Johnston listed as being married to Amanda Jane Fields. He's listed as the son of Campbell Johnston, also in this line is a grandson to Campbell Johnston, listed as, James Harmon Johnston, the son of William Johnston. I saw no mention of Sturgill. My great grandmother was Juline Johnson (JBrand gave correction Julia Johnston) (b) 1862, Scott County, VA (d) abt.1938, Lee County, VA. mar. 11-13-1878, Scott County, VA, James Bledsoe (b) 1855, Fairview, Scott, VA (d) March 13, 1933, St. Charles, Lee, VA. Their son, my grandfather, Evan Parkey Bledsoe (b) 1879 Lee County, VA (d) 1912 (Pennington Gap, VA, in mine explosion). mar. Nov. 11, 1907 Victoria A. Sprinkle (b) Nov. 19, 1877, Fairview, Scott County, VA (d) May 5, 1943, in Fairview, Scott, VA. parents of Victoria A. Sprinkle: Wesley C. I am the 4th child. Mary Evelyn Harris (b) October 21, 1937, Roda (Happy Hollow), Wise, VA To answer your question dated 10/30/00: What families are you looking for in this line, of Johnsons, Gilliams and Bledsoe? I'll just focus here, on the children of James Bledsoe and Juline Johnson (Julia Johnston), as Jean Brand was also generous enough to give me ancestors in her notes of 11/1/00, for Bledsoe and Johnson/Johnston. Margaret L. Sopp has posted twice for me on Sprinkle, so I've got to get back to her. I'm searching for information about my grandfather, Evan Parkey Bledsoe's death. I was able to obtain a death certificate on his wife, my grandmother, Victoria Sprinkle, but VA vital records couldn't find his records. He had set a charge in the mines & went back after a delayed time, then it went off, sending a big boulder down on his head, killing him. This my parents told me. Grandmother Sprinkle and her family had passed this on to my Mother, Edith. We know that she was only two (2) years old, when he died. I have a receipt in the name, E.P. Bledsoe, dated Jan. 12, 1912 for money paid on assignment #269 and camp dues to Mar. 31, 1912 in Pennington Camp No 12332 M. W. of A., Pennington Gap, VA. That's the latest one I have. Most items show only E.P. Bledsoe. I do have a receipt where he signed it Parkey. It was from R. J. Wood & Sons store, in Pennington Gap, Va. He loved cigars, I know. I see where he bought them & Mama kept a few of the empty boxes, which I have. I also have receipts showing him in Coaldale, WV, from J.G. Lipford, General Merchant, Glatto, WV. His first wife was Martha J. Napier. They divorced in Mar. 1904 & he received custody of their two children, David & Ollie. He married my grandmother, Victoria A. Sprinkle in Nov. 1907 Mama also kept their love letters. She also kept her own and our Father's, which is a treasure to us, their children. I have a statement from Bondurant Coal and Coke Co. Inc. Exclusive Miners and Shippers of The Celebrated Virginia Blue Gem Coal, dated July 13, 1912, which reads: Recd of Victoria Bledsoe: Policy of Evans Park Bledsoe Benefit Certificate #2066304 for the amt. of 1000.00 signed: P.C. Zearly counsol, Pennington Camp #12332 MWA, Pennington, VA I would say that would be his death policy? In those days the women did not handle the business. I don't know what the situation was, but do know that she didn't receive any of the money. It went to Evan Parkey Bledsoe's father, James Bledsoe and she returned to her father's home, Wesley C. Sprinkle, with their two small children, Edith & Ressie & remained, until her death in 1943. My Mother Edith Gertrude Bledsoe had a great memory, kept in touch with lots of her cousins, aunts, & uncles and oh how I wished I had kept better notes & listened more. I'd be happy to exchange any of those letters with the relative on the receiving end, for ones my Mother wrote. Her grandparents, James Bledsoe & Juline Johnson (Julia Johnston) had six children: Evan Parkey Bledsoe Jeff Bledsoe Andrew Bledsoe Elizabeth Margaret Bledsoe William (Bill) Bledsoe Phronie Bledsoe I don't have a name of the wife or children of Jeff Bledsoe, my grandfather, E.P. Bledsoe's brother. Then, upon rereading papers, of the sale of the homeplace in 1975, to the cousin living there, I see one child, Hobert Bledsoe. I don't have a name of the 1st or 2nd wife of his brother Andrew. Edith talked a lot about his children Polly & Hassie and their half brother Conley Bledsoe. Older family members spoke of the second wife placing the girls in an orphanage, when Andrew died. I have nothing to varify this. I have photos of all three of them taken on Edith's visit in 1975 or the one in 1977. I see from letters that Polly married, Homer Stout and had a son & daughter. I see that Hassie married Elmer Lundy and their children are Ina Lee, Gail, & Deborah Lynn Lundy. I believe they also had a boy, but I don't have a name. I have a photo of Aunt Eliza, taken between 1960-1978. I believe this is Parkey's sister Elizabeth Margaret Bledse. I have two husbands listed for her. I have a Mr. Vandergriff and a daughter, Virgie Vandergriff. The other name I have is a Mr. Phillips. I believe their daughter is Estelle Phillips, who married Harold Fleenor. I know my Mother, Edith visited with them on the Bledsoe homeplace in St. Charles, Lee, VA in the 1970s, which she enjoyed greatly. I don't have anything on William (Bill) Bledsoe except a photo taken of him standing on his porch between 1960-1978. He was also mentioned in letters grandfather, E. Parkey Bledsoe, wrote to his wife, Victoria. I have a photo of Phronie Bledsoe with her three children, when they were small. I have she married a Mr. Wells. I don't know if he was kin to Claude Wells, who married Virgie Belle Sprinkle. One of my notes mentions, Odyett Wells and Idle Fair Wells. I sure have a lot of notes to clear up? Of the children from Evan Parkey Bledsoe's first marriage, David Felix Bledsoe (b) Dec. 22, 1902, St. Charles, Lee, VA (d) April 10, 1973 WV and buried London Cemetery, Kanawha County, WV. married Nov. 18, 1929, Wise, Wise, VA, a sister of my Father, Vivian Harris, so I have 12 half double cousins, I guess you'd say. His wife is Birdie Rachel Harris (b) Mar. 11, 1911, Roda, Wise, VA. She lives in Sutton, WV. Ten of their children live mostly in that area. I'll be happy to give those interested, all their children's names, births and grandchildren of what ever I have. Same for Edith's six children and her sister, Ressie. David's sister, Ollie Sophronie Bledsoe had no children. I believe she had a step daughter, last name Martin. I have photos of her step grandchildren. She spent time in my home of Irving, TX in 1959. Also more time visiting, in home of my parents in 1960s in Lancaster, TX. (near Dallas). She lived in Kansas. Oh yes, on the Gilliam side. I don't have a maiden name for that gg grandmother, only Martha Ann married to Thomas Gilliam. This was passed on from a great aunt, Annie May Sprinkle, who died July 26, 1981, Plano, Collin County, TX. (near Dallas). I have three sisters living and we keep copying for each other, whatever, large or small we have, our Mother left us. We also, all hope to make a trip back to Virginia next spring or summer together. I sure hope this is not too long. I've yet to learn how to list 1. 2.i. 3. ii and etc. I'm working on it. Thank you, Mary Harris Carey ([email protected])
Corinne, In your reply with, food for thought, you say Lydia Johnston married Gar(d)ner Tomlinson and her sister married his brother, James Tomlinson. Which sister would this be? The sister that's my gg- grandmother, Juline Johnson (correction by JBrand, as Julia Johnston) married James Bledsoe. My grandfather, Evan Parkey Bledsoe (b) 1879, St. Charles, Lee, VA was their first child. Thanks. Mary
Mary Jo, I'm just learning of the Riley name connected to my Bledsoe line. Eliza Riley (dau. of Andrew Riley, mar. Andrew Bledsoe (my gg-grandfather). Their son, James Bledsoe (b) 1855, Scott County, Va, mar. Juline (Julia) Johnson/Johnston (b) 1862. Their son, Evan Parkey Bledsoe (b) 1879, Lee County, VA, mar. Nov. 11, 1907, Victoria A. Sprinkle (b) Nov. 19, 1877, Fairview, Scott, VA. Are you connected to the above Riley? Which Sprinkle did May Riley marry? Victoria had (11) siblings, consisting of (6) boys & (6) girls. I know her brother William had (3) wives. I only remember for sure, Verda. Victoria's father is Wesley C. Sprinkle & her mother is Lina Elizabeth Gilliam. I'll be happy to exchange Sprinkle photos. Mary

Other sources: 6th child of Wesley W. Sprinkle: Annie M. Sprinkle & her granddaughter, Barbara Luellen Goyen; Virginia Mabe Sprinkle & husband, Charles R. Sprinkle, son of 4th child, John S. Sprinkle; a second cousin, Kathleen Wells Goode Dickenson, the daughter of 7th child Virgie Belle Sprinkle. Many old family letters & phone notes. Mama left a treasure of family items pertaining to her parents & grandparents (Sprinkle/Bledsoe) to us children, such as old love letters tied with a pink ribbon of her parents and her's & our Daddy's. The letters (1907 -1970's) showed how much they all loved one another and also how family oriented. The letters show the hardship of the miners in those early days, having to leave their wife & children in one place & following the work opening up in another mine, some distance away, sometimes a state away. They speak of other family members, such as our Grandfather Parkey asking Grand-mother Victoria if one of his brothers brought her a sack of flour & ect. and saying, maybe we should sell the store to Mama (Juline (Julia) Bledsoe. We never knew they had a store, Maybe our Mother, Edith did. In Edith's letters to her husband, our father, Vivian Harris, some written with her spending time at the Wesley Sprinkle home with her mother, Victoria Sprinkle Bledsoe. She speaks of her Sprinkle uncles, Charlie, Taylor, Doyle & cousin Oscar at various times. These are sweet letters to her husband, but filled with genealogy information if one pays attention. Later letters are cousins & friends. Many items she had packed away, we are just realizing the value, as her Father's divorce papers from his first wife, papers giving him custody of their two children, store receipts, where her father signed his name Parkey (folks went by initials so much back then) as his E. P. Bledsoe or Evans (Evan) or Park. His name was Evan Parkey Bledsoe. I hope this is not too much to send and that it's useful to someone. I can also add the great grandchildren, gg- grandchildren & some ggg-grandchildren of Wesley C. Sprinkle. I need to work backwards now with the information, Margaret that you have given me. Thank you, Mary, granddaughter of Victoria A. Sprinkle

Hello list! Does anyone have access to death records? My information is a little vague. I am looking for my grandfather's mother who died from complications of childbirth. It would have been in March, 1897. It is thought her name was Rosa, maybe Starnes, maybe Hunter. My grandfather had no birth certificate and there might not be a death certificate for his mother who was probably only about 16 or 17. I am pretty sure that she was not married. My grandfather's father was named Ballard Neil and my grandfather went by that last name. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. A big thank you to Pat Drake for her wonderful page! And thanks to Jean Brand for all she has contributed to Pat's page! Would someone who has access to the 1870 Scott Co. Census lookup the household of Campbell & Rachel Johnston/Johnson? I am interested in the birthplace listed for Rachel. Also, I would like all the information on the James Ashley, age 60, who is living with Campbell and Rachel. Where was he born and what is the relationship to Campbell listed for him. Thanks in advance, Corinne
