1. [VASCOTT-] Daniel Boone Trail Marker Restored
2. Virginia Star Dec. 6, 2000 page 5 Daniel Boone Trail Marker Restored Carters Fort Chapter honored Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kern of Duffield for recovering and restoring a historical mark that marks the famous Daniel Boone Trail which was originally placed in Duffield by the Virginia Daughters prior to 1932. The marker was partially buried with about one foot protruding out of the ground. The Kern family became concerned a historical marker was in such bad state of repairs and wanted to restore it. Seeking the help and support of family members, friends, highway department and DAR members, they began restoration of the marker and erection of the monument at their own expense. Those honored at the rededication ceremony were Fred and Fay Kern, Jerry Tate (who furnished the stone and labor), Jeff Kern, Derick and Melinda Kern, David and Colleen Hurd, Taryn Hurd, Dan and Rose Ketly, Carl Ketly, Benny Spivey, Dole Bishop and Samuel Young. The restored monument sits about 1000 feet south of it's original location. The monument is located at the highway intersection of Route 856 and US 23 at Duffield. Provided by Carters Fort Chapter DAR. In reguards to a statement made over the site, how beautiful Scott County is, I agree 150%. I feel in love with Scott Co. my first trip back. Thank you Jean Brand

3. My grandmother gets that newspaper. I'll have to check it out on Monday when I'm at her house for Christmas. Have you ever been to Scott County? The first time I was there I joked that Daniel Boone must have gotten lost a lot while in VA because it seems like every road is the "Daniel Boone Memorial Trail" :-) There's a lot of history in that beautiful corner of the world. I have many pictures of the mountains and of houses from the last time I was there seven years ago. Hopefully I'll be able to go back next October for the family reunion! BTW, hello to all, I'm new to this list and to Genealogy. 1. [VASCOTT-] Just a true story
2. Jean Lewellen Brand
3. This true story has nothing to do with Scott Co., VA, but it's on my dad's line (Lewellen/Reed) and I want to share it with you. I found this a few years back in an old newspaper down in NM. This man was my great uncle fborn TN, helping settle the "wild west". Thanks for letting me share. Going back to Fresno this morning and get things ready for Christmas eve and all the family. Then Christmas Day I hope to walk an old cemetery near us where my father is buried. What a way to spend Christmas! Just last week I found another family member Dorothy Malicoat Cooper's grave in the next county over from us. She was the g-gd of Sarah Jane Barnett (born in Scott CO., VA) and Fanteroy M. Malicoat. Happy Holidays, Jean Brand Fresno, CA [email protected] & [email protected] Page 5 1938 Progress Edition The Daily Current Carlsbad, New Mexico Bad Shell and Fact That He Picked Up Wrong Gun Saved Rancher From Killers. Columbus Lewellen had no premonition of danger as he swung down a Texas canyon trail late one February evening in 1894, humming a carefree cowboy tune to the rolling rhythm of his blooded horse's easy lope. Lewellen had every reason to be happy. Times were good, pasture was abundant. His herd had prospered and he was on the way to being one of the West's cattle barons. He thought of his family back at the ranch house. They would be spared the hardships he had experienced as a lad in the mountains of Tennessee and Kentucky, he told himself. The sun was hanging low in the west as he turned down the trail leading to his partner's home. He had been sent word that the water supply had dried in a pasture where he kept a herd of fine horses. He would have to hurry to change them to another pasture and get home before night, so he spurred his horse. Long shadows were creeping across the valley, golden shades of light slanting upward through the boughs of the sleepy cottonwoods. Silhouetted against the plummeting red dics of the sun was form of his partner's wife. She appeared 15 feet tall, "that's funny," thought Lewellen. She's a mile away yet I can see her plain as day and she looks like a giant. Mirages were not unusual in western Texas, but they were not seen at sunset. The picture was rather ghostly, and it made Lewellen feel uneasy. Mechanically, he caught up his rifle from the saddle holster. His horse snorted, directing his attention to the trail in front of him. There stood the menacing form of his partner, his long booted legs planted on either side of the trail, the nuzzle of a six gun leveled at Lewellen's heart. "Stop where you are, Lewellen," barked the partner. "I might as well tell you now, that story of the water drying up was a gag. I just wanted to get you here to kill you. We've been stealing your stock for months and you were too stupid to know it. Now I am going to kill you and take the rest of them." He patted the barrel of his revolver and grinned. "You ready to die, Lewellen?" Further down the valley, a shot split the still air of the evening. A rifle ball whined close to Lewellen's horse, ripped through the leaves behind him. The frightened animal reared high into the air throwing Lewellen sideways, but his gun was leveled on the figure in the trail and when it spoke, the partner slumped to the ground, his dead fingers pressed hard on a trigger that had clicked on a worthless shell. "My God, don't kill me," wailed a frantic voice as a man jumped from behind a bush and kneeled at the feet of Lewellen's horse begging for his life. He was safe, for Lewellen had sent his last bullet through the heart of the partner who had tried to kill him for what cattle he had not already stolen and marketed. Two happy coincidences had saved Lewellen's life. One of the cattle thief friends of his partner had filed the trigger on his rifle so it would not stay cocked. His adversaries thought, with a jimmied rifle, Lewellen did not have a chance to shoot. His partner's wife had told the thieves that they had better not attack Lewellen, if they valued their lives, for he was a dead shot. "If you miss, you're dead," she told them, "for Lewellen doesn't miss". So when the cattle thief saw what happened in the first attempt on Lewellen's life, he went insane with fear. He did not know Lewellen's empty rifle just then was a harmless as a pop gun. That was Lewellen's first and last gunfight, but it cost him his last cent. A gang of nine cattle thieved had driven more than $100,000.00 worth of his cattle off to market. With the aid of the faithless partner, whom Lewellen had staked, and who owed him $3,000.00 the job had been easy. What he had left, he spent in proving to the court that he shot in self defense. With his family and what he salvaged from the wreckage, he moved to Black River in 1894, just across from Blue Springs, where he established a cattle ranch, stocked with the remnants of several old herds. Lewellen soon had a start again in the cattle business, but he never again regained the position he lost when his ungrateful partner joined with thieves to rob him of his herds he had spent many fruitful years in building up. Today, at 81, he is still active as caretaker of the Carlsbad Library and Museum. Mrs Lewellen and their youngest son, Lee, born in Carlsbad, are the only members of a large family who still live here. The had five children. When he is caught up with his work at the library, Lewellen likes to tamp his well-seasoned pipe full of tobacco and dream of the romantic days of the Old West. Through the lazy curling spirals of pipe smoke , he looks with tired eyes back through half a century at the days when Billy the Kid, the James boys and many another daring gunmen spilled blood across the pages of frontier history. If you can catch him in the right mood and isn't too busy, Lewellen will tell you many a hair-raising story of the days when men lived by the law of the six gun, and men survived because they were more rugged then the elements and quicker on the draw than other men. "Men were honest in the very early days," said Lewellen. "There was a time when a traveler could stop at a ranch house or a cowboy camp on the way home from market, throw his money belt on the ground as he slept, knowing it was safe there as if the money were in the bank. Men didn't steal in those days. It was man against the wilderness and men trusted each other." "But when this cattle stealing started, the west got bloody. There was peace on the ranges until many men came west to seek their fortunes - when boom towns mushroomed up and adventures started blazing and chapters of lawlessness were written into the history of the west."

2. Hello All, Please let me apologize for the additional email tonight. I, as a list admin, try to abstain from sending "extra" email. In this case I think it is justified. Through the generosity of the Wise County Historical Society and the editor ((Ms. Rhonda Robertson) of their publication, the "Appalachian Quarterly", I have been given permission to post the first five parts of the "Gateway to the West" series as well as the sixth part I posted tonight. I felt that the information was of such importance to potential researchers that I have worked non-stop since getting the permission at 11 pm tonight, to create an index page, convert the articles to HTML format and get them posted tonight. They are ready for public viewing! I appreciate your comments or suggestions. Once again, I apologize to anyone upset by the extra email. Hills and Hollers index page (for AOL users) http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~duncanrw Sincerely, Wayne Duncan Hills and Hollers Webmaster List Admin for: SWVA-NETN-SEKY-CHAT-L BIBLE-RECORDS-L MIGRATION-PATTERNS-L STATE-HISTORICAL-MARKERS-L

1. [VASCOTT-] Update to the Hills and Hollers pages
2. Hello all: I have just concluded transcribing the first two sections of a wonderful article about Lee County and its mineral assets. The article is entitled "Gateway to the West" and was published in the December 2000 edition of the Appalachian Quarterly Magazine published by the Wise County Historical Society. I hope to finish the transcription of a few more articles this weekend. I would highly recommend that anyone researching family lines in this area subscribe to the magazine. This is my very first copy and I now know more about my home county then I ever imagined possible. It is my hope that I can continue to transcribe highlight articles from each edition and add them to the collection on the website. If anyone reading this email has information about any of the Southwestern VA counties and the surrounding areas of TN, KY, and NC and wants their information posted on the web, please contact me. I'll add it at no cost to you! If you have the information already in a digital format, that makes transition to the web even easier. I'm having a blast being the web cooridnator for the Genealogical Society. I am learning more and more each day. I hope you will take the time to visit the site and let me know how you like it and any suggestions for making it better. 1. [VASCOTT-] Hilton Family information
2. Hello All Hiltons, Bob Hilton here. Here is some information I just found on my first cousin twice removed - Frank C. Hilton, born: October 12, 1908 in Pittsburgh, PA, son of Isaac S. Hilton and grandson of John F.(Napper) Hilton born April 4, 1850, died: 1915 of Norton, Virginia. The book "Hiltons of Southwest Virginia reported that Frank C. Hilton was the Commander in Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and possibly ran for Lt. Governor of Pennsylvania. I have confirmed that he was in fact the Commander in Chief of the Veterans of Foriegn Wars during 1951 - 1952. I have not yet confirmed the report of running for Lt. Governor. Information that I have uncovered so far at the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is as follows: Frank C. Hilton was appointed to the cabinet level post of Secretary of Properties and Supplies by the democratic Governor Milton J. Shapp, term: 1971 - 1979. In 1975 - 1976 Frank C. Hilton was investigated for charges of bribery and kick backs involved in an insurance scandal. Mr. Hilton was indicted and found guilty of the federal charges of briebery, and extorsion and sentence to 1 to 5 years in Federal Prison. Sometime in 1976 a Federal Judge reduced Frank C. Hilton's sentence to 1 year without parol. Mr Hilton was order to serve his sentence at this time. I have asked that the State Archives make Xerox copies of all the background information in the Department of Justice file that I viewed. I will at that time be able to provide you all with more exact dates. It is not readily obtainable by the information I have viewed whether this incident was politically instigated or whether Frank C. Hilton with forethought broke the law. The newpaper articles that I have read in this file seem to lean both ways. Whichever may be the case this is now history. At the time of this incident Frank C. Hilton was as reported in the newspaper articles 66 years of age. I believe this case was being investigate for a year prior to 1975. I do not at this time have any information on Frank C. Hilton after this period. The book "Hiltons of Scott County Virgina also reports that my great-great uncle Enos (Enoch) Hilton was shot an killed by Talt Hall. I have confirm this and in fact found the following song that had been written about Talt Hall and the Hilton incident by a 10 year old boy named Uriah N. Web in 1892. "Old Talt Hall" Come all you fathers and mothers, Brothers and sister all. I'll relate to you a story, The story of old Talt Hall. He's breaking up our country And trying to kill us all. He shot and killed Frank Slayers, Was the commencement of it all. He left his ol' Kentucky Virginia for to roam, Leaving his friends and loved ones Back in his Beaver Creek home. He roamed the streets of Wise and Norton Through the summer and the fall. He met with Enos Hilton, And poor Enos had to fall. The posse hunted for him Through valley, hill, and dale. They found him down in Memphis, And he had to go to jail. They arrested him in Tennessee. They brought him to Gladeville jail, Without any friends or relations, No one to go his bail. They built the platform, boys, Nearby the jailhouse side. He walked out on it and wrung his hands and cried, "If I hadn't killed Enos Hilton, I wouldn't have to die." Well guess I had better close for now. I will send more info as I get it. Bob
