Hi All: Have added more death certificates, a transcription of the Cadet Cemetery in Wise County VA (with a photo), some new nicknames, some old letters from the Ramey Family, and a great photo of the Kilgore Fort House in Scott County VA. Many thanks to the contributors. I have tried to ensure that credit is given in the respective locations! I have one volunteer working on entering the death certificate data into a spreadsheet so I can create a search engine for it. (Later!) As I format the certificates as I receive them, she is entering the data! I am also awaiting approval from CSX Rail to post some wonderful information about the old L & N railroad and how its expansion helped the Cumberland area. If you have submitted information for inclusion on the site and it is not entered yet, please contact me poste haste... I don't think I am behind with any more! Hope this information helps someone. Does some kind soul out there happen to have access to the 1860 Scott County Census -- and might be willing to look up a Henry Osborn/Osborne/Osbourne who is supposed to be on page 516? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Carol in Cornhuskerland P.S. I have the 1850 images book if anyone needs help with that one.
Good morning all: I have just completed updating/revising the "Hills and Hollers" site. I have added a DEATH REGISTER page for information being provided by Rhonda Robertson and the Wise County Historical Society on the deaths of former coal camp residents. I hope to keep adding the records as fast as Rhonda can provide them in scanned format. I have also added some more state historical marker photos provided by some of you. I would love to expand this portion to other states. Got any photos of historical markers laying around from your last vacation or day trip? Send them to me and I'll add them to the site! And lastly, I have revised the homepage. I added a guestbook (which many of you requested) and revised the homepage so that the "table of contents" has its own page now. I plan to build a searchable database of all the records and files on the website and create downloadable files for them as well. Sure wish I could devote more time but alas; I have to work for a living! As always, comments and suggestions are always welcome. Sincerely, Wayne Duncan Hills and Hollers Webmaster http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~duncanrw
I'm sorry if this is a repeat message for any of you other subscribers. I have only a little info about my father, JOHN CLEVELAND MEYERS, written in pencil on a scrap of paper with multiple grammar and spelling errors. I believe he was born in Scott County, VA in Mar 1886. M died 2 mos, F died 11 yrs. He died in Portsmouth, Va in Feb 1935 when I was 10, leaving me an orphan, and with virtually no info about his ancestors or siblings. "Justis (Justice) Roper", who wrote the note that I have, repeatedly writes "Catt County". But since there is no Catt County, and he mentions Gate City, which is in Scott County, I think "Catt" is an error. He also wrote the names Samuel Meyers, John Frederick Meyers, and Mary Elizabeth Meyers, with no indication of who they were. JCM may have been in Cincinnati in 1910 (living with a sister?). I'm searching for any records in the 1800's for a family named Meyers or any of the many variables in the spelling (Meyer, Myer(s), Meier(s), Mayer(s), etc. The note says "Samuel Meyers Galveston tex when last herd from". I would appreciate any leads or source suggestions anyone might have. Thanks! John Meyers

I got carried away with John B. I should have said that my Grandfather, Owen Hezekiah Willis and his sisters listed "Lina" as their Mother.
Looking for William and Jane (LNU) SMITH in Scott Co. Va. My Gr Grandparents, John B WILLIS b1839 (Isaac,Abner) and Eveline "Lina" SMITH b abt 1843 were married in Scott Co. Jan 26 1867. Eveline listed her parents as William and Jane SMITH. John B was born in Wise Co and was the son of Isaac Willis b 1804. John B and two of his sisters, Nancy Jane and Rosa Alice, listed "Lina" as their Mother on their marriage license. Sister Sarah C. listed her as Eveline. Is it possible that Eveline "Lina" could be the daughter of William and Jane FRANCISCO SMITH of Scott Co. ??? (They were the only William and Jane pair that I have found). I am also looking for infromation on William SMITH-------A very-very tough name to trace. Thank you all for taking the time to look at my problem. [email protected]
HAPPY NEW YEAR Be safe, happy Twanda

Hello All: Some folks seem to be having problems using the last link I sent to the "Hills and Hollers" website. Because of the differences in operating systems on different servers, sometimes the AOL hypertext links do not work properly. If the hyperlink in my signature line does not work properly, please use the cut and paste functions to manually enter this line into the search line of your respective browser; http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~duncanrw Be careful if you manually type it in... the character in front of duncanrw is a tilde (~), not a dash (-). It makes all the difference! I apologize for anyone's difficulties. If you continue to have problems, please contact me privately at [email protected] and I will try to rectify the problem. Hello All: I have just finished adding some new pages and updating others at the "Hills and Hollers" website. Feel free to peruse the site. New links, photos, new information, etc. I hope someone finds the info useful. Still looking for more information to add! Anxious to get some more information!!!!!! I believe I have posted all information that was in the "needs to be processed" folders I had. The only exception is a series of images concerning the L&N Railroad's Cumberland Division. I am still researching the copyright issue. There is no publisher or author information in the original. The article was written by a L&N employee...any ideas as to the legality to publish on the website? If you have sent info and it is not posted, please contact me! Dear Friends and Fellow Family History Researchers, May we always remember He is the reason for the season. May our research efforts be blessed in the coming year and our brick walls come tumbling down! Merry Chistmas to all and to all a good night! Dianna Gilliam [email protected] Away in a Manger, Revisited Away in a manger our Saviour once lay, and that is the reason we have Christmas day; He came down from Heaven to live here below to suffer and die because He loves us so. The shepherds first found Him on that starry night; An angel spoke to them and they saw His light. They knelt in the hay there so fragrant and warm and worshipped our Saviour that first Christmas morn. Three kings came to praise Him and gifts to Him gave, and to all His children He then showed the way to serve Him and others by day and by night, and love God, the Father, with heart, mind, and might. He taught us to know what is wrong and what's right... to pray without ceasing and seek further light; To love everybody, the weak and the strong; and ever remember to Him we belong. Let us then be worthy in spirit and truth, to guide others to Him, our lives be the proof; To bring souls to Jesus that they might be free, and praise, ever praise Him, where e'er we may be! Away in a manger, asleep in the hay, our Saviour's the reason for Christmas today. Hi All: Happy Holidays! Just finished adding a couple of more things to the Hills and Hollers website. An article as to how Ben Hur VA got its name and a very interesting link to a website containing articles about SWVA history. Hope they help. I am working diligently on getting more information formatted and uploaded. If you have sent me data and it is still not there, I hope to have it done and posted by week's end. Thanks for being patient.
