    1. CA rolling black outs
    2. Jean Lewellen Brand
    3. Pat, I know just what you are saying about the rolling blackouts, Fresno was hit all day and night yesterday from the local news. So we shell wait until this power matter has been cleared up before scanning any more pictures. Just last night I learn it was to hit my home in Fresno, so I'm leaving this morning for Fresno as soon as the roads are cleared. At least I have a large fire place down there. My 80 yr. old mother lives with me in my home there. I'm going out and purchase a 5000 generator when I get down there today, been talking about it for a couple months, I need one for my RV anyhow. Just be getting it before I had planned, oh well. I thought Gov Davis had solved PG & E power problem, but guess it has turned into a political thing now. Guess it's time to start a real hard push on Gov. Davis office! What really bothers me the most is, what about the seniors that doesn't have anyone to help them during these blackouts! Well I know one senior who will be taken care of and most likely some of my mom's friends will be coming over as well to stay warm. Our ancestors made it just fine without the modern day inventions and I'm sure we will manage just fine. But sure will miss our computers! grin. Oh well, another day in the modern life style. One can heat water over a fireplace, cook food on their BBQ pit, take a bath on Sat afternoons, and read by oil lamps, just like camping out. Will get the pictures done as soon as possible Pat. Later Jean Fresno CA and Oakhurst CA

    3. Send anytime Jean, my home computer is still running. Many of you know about the horrible electricity crisis we are having in California. Today we were hit with a stage 3 blackout and my work computer (the one I just fixed) took a hit during the outage. I'm hoping it didn't crash the hard-drive. Good thing I keep everything backed up on the home machine. I will be out of touch during the days for a little bit, so if I don't answer right away, you all know why. pat At 02:37 PM 01/17/2001 -0800, Jean Lewellen Brand wrote: >Well Pat, > >Now that the holidays are over I found another 2 doz old photos that I >need to scan and send you. 1. LIST
    2. There has been a major problem with certain lists on Rootsweb since last Friday. This list is one of the ones that was involved in the Crashed Server. We are again up and running. I have a favor to ask each of you. You are going to begin in a little while receiving all the messages that have been backing up in the system since last Friday. Please be understanding, USE YOUR DELETE KEY, yelling and screaming will not stop it. I am holding on for dear life. I will have messages coming to me from four lists hitting me all at once along with bouncing messages and messages from those of you asking for help. Together we will get through this and look back on this day as the "Day of the Rootsweb Flood", and laugh. If you have asked to be unsubscribed, that request was most likely never received. Please understand that even if I unsubscribe you now, I cannot stop what you are going to receive. If the lists do not look the same, meaning the headers are gone. I will bo back and take care of that when this flood is over. Good luck and I look forward to getting back to normal when the sun is again shinning. List Moderator (Kathleen)

    2. My dear cousins and list members, I have received so many prayers and good wishes that I cannot answer them individually. Please accept my thanks for all your prayers and concern and know how much they mean to me. I am sure that I will remember each one as I drift off to sleep tomorrow. I know that God answers prayer and He will be with me tomorrow. Thanks again and God Bless each of you, love Pat

I have to be at the hospital at 8:00 am for my surgery.I won't know how long I will have to stay or anything until he gets in there to find out if it is malignant or not. I am calm and at peace with this, Jesus has always gone in the O.R. with me and I know he will tomorrow too. Please continue with your prayers and I will let you all know something as soon as I can get back on the computer. Pat

The story of Catherine Summers is a true story from the year 1862 in Campbell County and relates closely to the actual events celebrated at the Pine Mountain re-enactment >by Charles Winfrey >LaFollette Press News Editor > >It was a warm night in August of the year 1862. A bedraggled group of men huddled around a campfire, speaking softly among themselves. They were Rebel cavalrymen, trying to make their way back to their own lines near Tazewll after a run in with federal infantry earlier in the day. > >Suddenly a deep voice sounded from the bushes outside their circle of light, telling them they were surrounded and to give up their arms and surrender. From other directions around their camp came the whisper of orders being passed back and forth. > >The six Confederate soldiers had been part of a group that encountered a Union raiding party near Big Creek Gap earlier in the day and had been scattered. These six had been dodging not only Union troops all day, but also the local pro Union population. > >Now, apparently, the Yankees had caught up with them. The Confederates grounded their arms and stood up with arms upraised, to receive a shock. > >Out of the underbrush carrying an old cap-and-ball pistol strode not a Yankee officer but a short little female, dressed in men's clothing. >From the other side of the clearing walked another woman carrying a shotgun and a stripling of a boy, not more than twelve or thirteen years old. > >The captive Rebels may have felt like laughing, or going for their weapons, but something in way that one woman carried herself and handled that old pistol told them to obey her instead. > >In early August of 1862, many Campbell County families were hopeful that the war clouds which had hung over the country and the oppressive presence of Confederate troops would soon be at an end. > >Just north in Cumberland Gap was encamped a large Union army of nearly 12,000 men who had occupied the strategic gap in June. Many of the Yankee soldiers were not Yankees at all but East Tennesseans from Campbell and nearby counties, volunteers with six Tennessee Union regiments which were part of the Union force. > >It was along the picket line at Cumberland Gap, much later that night, that the Union guards were shocked to see two women and a boy escorting their six prisoners through the lines. > >A small scrawny woman with a deep, manlike voice, Amanda Catherine Summers (wife of Lorenzo D. Summers(daughter of Sarah Malicoat and Jeremiah Boshears)grand daughter of Lark and Polly Mallicoat) niece of my great-great grandparents, Fanteroy L. and Susan Wright Malicoat) had not been content to sit at home when her husband marched off to war. As soon as rumors began flying in June that the Union Army was advancing through mountain passes out of Kentucky, Kate Summers and a few other local women began serving as self-appointed scouts and spies. > >One unidentified Campbell County housewife is recorded in official reports as having ridden into the mountains to warn the invading Yankees of a Confederate ambush. Possibly saving a number of lives through her actions. > >By the beginning of August, Kate Summers was known not only to her Campbell County kinfolk but to a number of Union officers, for her eagerness to observe Confederate troop movements and carry that information to Union lines. > >Unfortunately for these men they had camped near the homes of Kate Summers and Lucinda Heatherly, whose husband John was a Lieutenant in the 6th Tennessee Infantry. The two women dressed themselves in men's clothing and recruited a young teenaged boy to accompany them. The three unlikely soldiers crept to within a few yards of the Rebel campfire and Kate, "in her best coarse voice with much soldierly profanity," impersonated a Union soldier and called out to the Rebels to surrender. > >To add to the captives' humility, the two women then marched their prisoners all night to Cumberland Gap, where they turned the prisoners over to the amazed Union pickets. > >Three years later the war ended and peace returned to Campbell County. John and Lucinda Heatherly remained for a few years and then moved to Texas. Sometime after her returned home, Kate Summers' husband Lorenzo abandoned her and her two children, possibly to move west himself. > >Destitute, Kate Summers wrote to the War Department in Washington, seeking a pension. Since her husband had abandoned her and his whereabouts was unknown, she was denied a Civil War widow's pension. She then applied for a pension on her own merits, citing her service as a scout for the Union Army in 1862 and especially the capture of six Confederate prisoners. > >Since she was a woman and never officially mustered into the United States Army, Kate Summers did not qualify for a pension from the Veteran's office. She was told that her request, like many other "special compensations" would have to be made directly to the Congress of the United States. > >Never one to give up without a fight, Kate Summers in 1883 applied to Congress for her pension. Her letter pointed out that "Many a Union soldiers had done less for the cause," and was accompanied by letters of support from several men who had served at Cumberland Gap. > >Among those supporting letters was one formerly Charlie Dunkin (Duncan), formerly Captain, Company C, 1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. In the letter, preserved in the musty archives of the Congressional Record, Duncan affirms that he was in command of the picket on about August 3rd, 1862 when "Kate Summers and Lucindy Heatherly, local women known to a number of my men."approached the lines with six Confederate prisoners and several horses, saddles and arms, and turned the lot over to Duncan. > >Duncan wrote that his surly prisoners admitted that they had been fooled into surrendering to the two women and that being interrogated they gave their parole as prisoners of war and were released to their homes until exchanged. > >The Record contains no word of whether Congress ever discussed the case of Kate Summers other than to accept her application, but shortly afterward, a new Administration changed policies >on war pensions and Kate Summers received no help from an ungrateful government. > >According to her great-granddaughter Oneida Gossage, Kate Summers eventually moved to a one-room log cabin on High Knob, where she lived with her one cow and chickens. > >"Eventually she moved to the County Poor Farm, living there for a time until one or another of her grandchildren would take her to their homes. But Kate always returned to the poor farm. "We think she just liked being there with all those older folks," Oneida said. > >For the rest of her life Kate Summers was known throughout the county as "Captain Kate." 1. Hills and Hollers Update Notice
    2. Hi All: I have completed some more additions to the Hills and Hollers website. Many thanks to the folks who are contributing! I am most appreciative. I have added pages concerning the old L and N Railroad and an article concerning an individual who spent some 70 years in the coal mining industry. I also updated the Death Certificate page. The Wise County VA Historical Society has been most generous and I would like to personally thank them for their efforts. We have undertaken a huge project and are slowly getting it done. If you have sent me something for posting and it is not up on the page yet, please give me a little more time to format everything. If you do not see it by next Friday, please email me and remind me! I have been a little occupied rebuilding the transmission and clutch in my truck for the last few days. After some initial incorrect parts, I am happy to say all is in order and seems to be working ok. Thanks to all those who sent suggestions and comments about that job. I used many of them! Last thing, I am slowly retrieving info about whom is researching who and where you are researching from my guest register. I hope to use that information to create a page to help allow folks to contact others who may be researching the same surnames or the same areas. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome. 1. [VASCOTT-] Library Information
    2. From: [email protected] Dear interested parties: The Powell Valley News is the local newspaper, published weekly in Pennington Gap, Lee Co., VA. This began in 1926. Some (or all) of these papers are on microfilm in the local library (Lee Co. Virginia Public Library). You might want to call in the afternoons (540) 546-1411(ask for Miss Elizabeth Carpenter, the local genealogy "expert", as she would know what is on microfilm etc.). I bet she would at least let you know if your grandparents are listed in that (or in the Lee Co. Death Registers) which are available in book form at the same library. The regular staff is not genealogically "attuned", so you really need to call when Miss Elizabeth is there - only afternoons, before 5 PM EST or EDT. Good luck! Dot in Tampa, FL

    1. [VASCOTT-] List admin/Hills and Hollers Webmaster status through Jan 14, 2001
    2. Hi all, Just a quick note to let you know what is going on in my personal life. Hate to be a bearer of bad news, (perhaps not so bad??) but I am going to be out of touch for a few days. It appears as though the clutch and/or engine in my truck has finally given out. (145,000 miles and 11 years after I bought it! ) It will not move at all. I cannot afford to buy a new vehicle or to have a professional mechanic do the work required so it will be me trying to fix it. That should be a learning experience to say the least. Going to have to use some of my country upbringing and learn just how that beast works. I have no other alternatives but to dedicate the majority of the next few days to that beast. Best bet is that Sunday is the earliest I will be back mobile again, given that my learning curve is going to be the better part of the next two days. I will do everything I can to answer CRITICAL emails. I don't expect to find time to any updates to the Hills and Hollers website. If there is something that absolutely will not wait, please put the word "CRITICAL" in the subject line of your email. My apologies to list members who will consider this email to be frivolous but I thought it best to let my lists and those who regularly visit the Hills and Hollers website what is going on.
