    3. Good day! I have added a new section to the Photo site, it's called The Shoebox. I will be a place to post unlabeled photos in the hope that someone may recognize some of these people. The first group is up, go to the home page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~drakefam/scottphotos/ and click on the new link near the top of the page that says"The Shoebox". With the pictures is a little information on the person that owned them, including family names. Hopefully someone out there can help! Thanks, pat

    3. Jean, I'm sorry. It was not my intention to cause any trouble or hard feelings. I'm new to all this, and didn't understand what Pat was doing. I thought I was being helpful and "sharing" when I told about Phyllis' books. In the future, I'll try to be more careful about how I word my messages. Pat and Brenda have set me straight on what's being done, and I think it's great! I absolutely agree with you about there being no one place for all information. I just can't imagine trying to do genealogy without the Internet and all the sharing it offers. We do indeed have the right to share our photos and lineage with others. I appreciate your response, and I hope there's no hard feeling. Carol

    3. Carol, Why should there be any hard feelings, remember freedom of speech, all our ancestors fought for that also.... You have just as much right to say what you want and feel as I do or anyone else. So don't worry about it, my feeling aren't hurt. Now let's get on to genealogy. 3. The address Carol sent should have been http://www.rootsweb.com/~vascott/other/pubs.html Also last week or week before last the newsletter from Ancestry.com had a good article on copywrites. Anything that is public information can not be copywrited. I think, copying what another person has researched does take some of the fun out of your own root digging. However, sometimes that is the only way you can get information. I also resent being charged for info on my family from some one that has no connection to them. Good Luck to you all!

    1. Christopher Ambrose Taylor
    2. I am looking for information on my grandfather, Christopher Ambrose Taylor or Ambrose Christopher Taylor (documents varies the name). He was the Sheriff of Scott County somewhere from the 1880's to 1910. Has anyone came across any information on him? Is there a place I could check records? Thank you, Karen Taylor

    1. Re: Scott Co cemeteries
    2. Carol, I am not being rude. I, too, appreciate Phyllis' efforts. However, cemeteries, courthouse records, etc. are public domain and can be used as information by anyone. I don't know the dates on Phyllis' books. I live near Scott County and within the past year have personally checked each marker and recorded it and its location in the cemetery. I have also recorded EXACT DIRECTIONS, ROAD NOS. AND TOWNS with the county to get to the cemeteries. I am not selling these, but I am giving them to people who are interested. The cemeteries I have checked are those where I have at least one family member buried there. This is not infringing on anyone's copywrite. If I ever publish a book on my family I will use my own cemetery recordings, and that will not be an infringement. I have sent Phyllis some updates for her books and I will do the same for Pat to enter on the internet if she wants it. Now, if I copied Phyllis' books and didn't check them myself and published a book identical to hers, she could probably sue me for infringement because of the way her maps are laid out. I have not done any of my recordings like that. They are recorded as the exact location and I think that's what Pat is doing is giving a more precise location. I have also made several trips to the Scott County Courthouse for information in the past 3 weeks. If I choose to take the time to record the marriages, death records, etc. from the courthouse records that will not be infringement and there have been more than one book published on these types of records. 3. Pat, and list, Phyllis Peterson's has done great research for her books, covers many census, marriages, etc. I for one wouldn't do anything to interfere with her great work, but on the other hand, I do think I have the right as well as others to share our photos and lineage. I don't believe all the information for anyone that ever lived in Scott Co., VA is in storage at the Gate City Court House! I don't believe everyone that had ancestors in Scott CO., VA owns a computer either! When I have been asked where they can get books on Scott Co., VA that is reliable, I refer them to Phyllis. I share my information as I would like persons to share with me and many have. I don't see where there is a problem, unless the list lets it become a problem! Jean Lewellen Brand Fresno CA

    3. Carol, Yes, I am aware of Phyllis Peterson's great books and I am not trying to duplicate her work or replace it. I am in awe of all Phyllis has accomplished. 1. Re: Peder,Pedu,P.D. Meaning?
    2. Martha Hansard
    3. Mike, You may be right about "P.D." or "Peder" being a place designator. David Cox acquired the property in 1820. In that same year there was also a "Cocke David Sr" and a "Cocke David Jr" in addition to this "Cox David" who later became known as "Cock David Peder" or "Cox David P.D." I haven't been able to determine any distinction among the various spellings of "Cocke," "Cock," or "Cox." I am just assuming if there is any consistency it is an accident. David Cox P.D. bought two parcels on the "North Side of Clinch River." I really haven't connected him to anyone in my Cox line but the 1847 land tax records indicate that his heirs were Jacob William Cox, James David Henderson, Henry A. Cox and Isaac Cox. Maybe someone else is interested.
