Sarah and others interested, Everyone, (in my humble opinion), should have a copy of the Everton Genealogical Helper, it contains brief county histories, dates of formation, address of county clerks and many other helpful items. The Everton Publishers do have a genealogy site, perhaps someone else on the list can provide the address. I myself have 2 of their books an 1971 edition and a 1995 both have been invaluable to me. More info for you from the VIRUS people The latest one, "W32/[email protected]", looks at the UNREAD email in the InBox, then "replies" to ALL those emails. It doesn't, like other infections, mess with the Address Book. It sends itself to the original posters of the emails, and those people receive them FROM the person whose system is infected. So, with this specific virus, no, you won't receive email from anyone who is NOT infected.
Please CUT AND PASTE (not attach) and pass this along to everyone that you know. Then do not send or open any attachments for at least 6 weeks. And after six weeks open them only if you have purchased a firewall software. There are a number of FREE firewalls that you can download. I personally use ZONEALARM and is working well for me. Also I trust that you have a good virus system installed to your system. THIS is sent to you via ROOTSWEB, Please try to remember this so that you will not pick up a virus. Elizabeth Good married Isaac Kern in 1847 in Scott CoVA. The record can be found in the Scott County Marriage Register 1, page 94.
I'll be visiting SW VA for the first time this fall. I'd appreciate it if someone on the list could post the mailing addresses for the courthouses in Scott & Wise counties and any libraries or gen societies in the area. Thanks, Kay Davidson
Good afternoon list, Well the BadTrans got me yesterday afternoon, as soon as I was notified by my virus detector I shut right off line. McAfee dector let me know right away, McAfee couldn't clean it but it was able to delete it, then I did another full scan and found nothing more, then I reinstalled and back up and running. It's no big deal, just keeps one on their ties at time. So now back to genealogy! So what have I missed???? Jean Fresno, CA
Hi List, Can someone tell me if voting records for the 1860 presidential election are available somewhere? The precinct was Peter's Precinct. I am looking for the record of Drayton Hale....he voted for Lincoln as I understand. I am grateful for any help received. Susan Petersen
Hi list, I am looking for a couple of newspaper articles...or suggestions on how to get them. My gggrandfather, Drayton Hale wrote some articles for the Gate City Herald. I have no idea how many or the subject matter. I do have information on one titled "A Tardy Obituary of Rev. John Strong," written in 1910. I would be very interested in a copy of that article, as Strong had a life-long impact on Hale. Any others would be frosting on the cake! I will appreciate any offers or suggestions. Susan Petersen
I am attempting to locate the parents of Elizabeth GOOD of Scott County Virginia. She married Issac Kern on Feb. 9, 1847. I have been unable to locate anything on Elizabeth. Working on a hunch this may be a second marriage for her. I am wondering if someone with the marriage index books if they could see if a GOOD groom married an Elizabeth (?) around the late 1820's early 1830's. I am only working on a longshot but any help is appreciated. ISAAC KERN was born November 29, 1806 in Shenandoah Co., Va., and died August 20, 1893 in Scott Co., Va.. He married (1) MARGARET CATHERINE HOUSEMAN March 27, 1828 in Boteoturt County, VA., She was born February 14, 1812 in Boteoturt Co., Va., and died July 09, 1846 in Scott Co., Va.. He married (2) ELIZABETH GOOD February 09, 1847 in Scott County, Va.. Thanks, Dick

James R. Lawson married Rebecca Mullet in Scott County on 29 May 1827. At the 1850 census they had John (age 18), Martin (age 14), Matilda (age 12), Nancy (age 10), Sally (age 8), and Henry S. K. (age 2). Does anyone know the identity of the parents of James R. Lawson? I understand that when he died Rebecca reported his parents as Robin and Elizabeth. Thanks. Ken Lawson [email protected]
I am searching for a Susan C. Lane whose daughter married Nancy married Samuel L. Kern on 3 Oct 1871 in Scott County Virginia. The name for last name for Nancy in the marriage index is ODRS. I cannot find anything on this name. In looking at the 1870 census index it looks like Susan may still be living in Taylor Township, Scott County, Virginia. I am not positive that this is the same for I only found it in the index. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Dick Rice
Hi List, Can someone give me the dates covered in Phyllis Peterson's marriage books? Also Isn't there a website where I can order them? Seems I saw one...and of course, now I can't find it.
List: So many are writing asking me to send the article, so here's their address. This is the site for the Virginia Star newspaper. www.virginiastar.net Have a great day. Jean Fresno, CA

Wouldn't it be safe to say that if you get an e-mail with an attachment that appears to come from a RootsWeb list it must be bogus and not from RootsWeb at all? I thought that RootsWeb lists did not support attachments and any attachment to a legetimate post would be stripped of the attachment or rejected by their server. Gail Mynatt Zeigler
Folks; You cannot get this virus from the List... BUT ... this virus (worm) works this way... whenever a person has this virus (usually they don't even know they have it) and email comes into their computer, the worm replies to that email and sends an attachment containing the virus. This is how it spreads itself. What is happening is that evidently there are a few people on the list who have the virus (worm) in their computers and probably do not realize it. Whenever someone posts to the list, it goes to about 800 people that are subscribed to this list. When it reaches the person who has the worm in his/her computer, the worm replies to that person who posted a message to the list. With the reply there will be an attachment. DO NOT OPEN IT. The ones I have received today and the ones Michelle received also ahve a message that says something like, "take a look at this attachment." This is the worm sending these -- this is not someone being malicious. You can get this virus from anyone. It is not limited to lists or anything. Anyone can send it to you without even knowing that they sent it. ***If you post a message to any list and then receive a reply to that post ***with a short message saying "take a look at this attachment" ...... DELETE the attachment unopened and you will have no problem. If this happens to you after posting, please email me. I will let that person know that they have the virus and then I will unsubscribe him/her until he/she gets it cleared out of their computer. Afterwards of course they are welcome to come back to the list. We just need to let people know they have it so they can get rid of it and stop spreading it. I have had to unsubscribe 2 people today who have the virus. I am sure they didn't even know they had it. REMEMBER, just delete the attachment and you will be fine. ><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> WORD TO THE WISE: "GEDCOMS are probably going to become the end to any serious genealogical research on the WEB. Once they are encoded, and sent to one of the commercial sites, or even the LDS Ancestral File site, they are quite likely going to end up on a CD that will be sold to millions of unsuspecting people. *No one, at any stage, verifies the data for accuracy*. This means that any GEDCOM sent to a commercial site, instantly becomes 'Public Property', and can be used in any way that the commercial site sees fit. If the information is totally bogus, well - tough luck! [If the file contains private information about you and your family - again - tough luck!] Want to buy a few more FTM or Broderbund CD's?".....Dave Clark Belmont, NC
