This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Walters, Stacy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ABC.2ACE/3727.1 Message Board Post: I am looking for Lewis Walters of Russell Co., VA ... on a reasonable hunch that he may be the father (or an uncle) of my 4th great-grandfather Richard Walters. My Richard Walters has been a brick wall for about 15 years. I have never been able to find any info that names, or even indicates, his parents, exact date of birth, place of birth, sibs, etc. The earliest record I have of him is in Pulaski Co., KY 1802 when he marries Mary "Polly" Hardgrove. Since Richard married in 1802, I have assumed that he was probably born ca 1780. Richard dies in Pulaski Co., KY in Feb 1815 leaving his widow Polly and three children; two sons and one daughter. One son named Lindsey / Linzey (my ancestor), a second son named "Lewis", and a daughter named Mary or Mariah. My Lindsey produced a son and named him Lewis. Lewis produced a son (my great-grandfather) and named him Josiah "Lewis". Recently, I was looking over some Walters material given to me in the early 1990's and there was a brief note on one page that mentioned a Lewis Walters of Russell Co., VA and the treasury warrant dated 08 May 1783. I went to the Russell Co., VA Rootsweb site and checked the Personal Property Tax Lists (Lower District) and find the name Lewis Walters on the 1787 list ... Lewis Walker on the 1788 list ... Lewis Walters on the 1789 list ... Lewis Waller on the 1792 list ...Lewis Walkers on the 1795 list ... and Lewis Walters on the 1796 list. All these names appear on the Lower District list. With the minor variation of one letter in the Walters surname, it seems reasonable to me that this is the same man from year to year to year to year. Even in my great-grandfathers (Josiah Lewis Walters) records from time to time I come across the spelling of "Walter" instead of "Walters". Another stunning find when reviewing the Russell Co., VA Personal Property Tax List for the Lower District in the years mentioned in the above paragraph is that the name Simon Stacey is listed for several years. As mentioned above Richard Walters produced two sons: Lindsey / Linzey and Lewis. Both Lindsey (my 3rd great-grandfather) and his brother Lewis settled in Russell Co., KY. On 13 July 1850 (Deed book E, pp 245, 246) records: "Lewis Walters and Elizabeth, his wife, late Elizabeth Stacy, heirs and legal representatives of Simon Stacy, late of Russell Co., KY dec'd ......... ". So, could this be the same Simon Stacy originally from Russell Co., VA who died in Russell Co., KY? Were the Walters family and Stacy family friends / neighbors in Russell Co., VA. Did both families moved to Russell Co., KY and Lewis Walters of Russell Co., KY (and grandson of Lewis Walters of Russell Co., VA) marry the daughter of the Simon Stacy of Russell County, VA? Could very well be. Certainly makes me wonder! Thanks in advance for any assist.
