Coal was first commercially mined there beginning in 1912, but your ancestors could have been involved in building the town or developing the mines. Or they could have lived there when it was still farming country. The Wilder mine closed in 1930 and the town dwindled away. A coal company still actively mines in the area; there is no town at that site now.
I just read about the Wilder Coal Mine, this was in VA? That is odd because there was a Wilder Coal Mine in Wilder Overton County, Tennessee as well, owned by the same people. My ancestors worked there. There is a Wilder reunion every year as well. ----- Original Message ----- From: <shearer@clinchmountainpress.net> To: <VARUSSEL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 12, 2005 5:35 PM Subject: [VARUSSEL] Re: Wilder, Va. > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ABC.2ACE/3094.2 > > Message Board Post: > > Wilder was a coal town owned and operated by the Clinchfield Coal Corp. in > Russell County, north of Cleveland.
