    3. In the Chalkley Chronicles on the Augusta County GenWeb it mentions that John Thompson was the heir to Anthony and Robert Thompson of Pennsylvania. Do you think that John is the same one that is later mentioned as having a wife named Susannah and a son named Billy? madye@fuse.net wrote:This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. The Russell Co. Thompson's were not children of John & Mary Thompson of Halifax Co., NC. As Robert mentioned in his message, there were nine Thompson siblings, namely, William, Richard, John, Susannah who married William Johnson, Margaret who married first William Roman and second Russell Duty, Martha who married first William Ferrell and second William Evans, Elizabeth who married William Elam, Sarah "Sally" who married John Elam, and Rachel who married James Emmett. All of these siblings are documented in the court papers at Wythe Co., VA in regards to the civil suit over Richard's estate. I have been to the courthouse and obtained copies of these records. Also, William was not the youngest of the three brothers. John, born abt 1761 most certainly was younger than William who was born abt. 1752. As for the identity of the parents of the Russell Co. Thompsons, there has been nothing that definately documents their identity, however, research of early Washington & Russell Co. tax records indicates that their fathers name was John. Additional information indicates that their mothers name was probably Susannah. The Thompson family was in what became Russell Co. as early as 1771, at which time it was part of Fincastle Co. Fincastle had just been formed from Botetourt Co. and in 1769 Botetourt had been formed from Augusta Co., VA. So a search of Botetourt & Augusta Co. records is appropriate prior to 1771. In the Augusta records is a court record from 1759 where William Ferrell (husband of Martha Thompson), orphan of John Ferrell, was bound out to John Archer. John Archer owned land on Long Glade Creek in Augusta Co. There was a John Thompson who also owned land on a branch of Long Glade Creek in 1759. A court case from 1769 indicates that John's wifes name was Susannah and that he had a son named Billy. Also in 1769 John & Susannah Thompson sold two tracts of land on Glade Creek to Isreal Christian. This last bit of information is important because Isreal Christian also moved to the Thompson Creek area of what would become Russell Co. and was a close neighbor of the Thompson! family on Thompson Creek. All of this information combines to indicate that John & Susannah Thompson were probably the parents of the Russell Co. Thompson family. Lastly, as to the "belief" that the Thompson family is originally from Scotland and stayed one generation in Ulster Ireland prior to coming to VA, there simply is no evidence to support that. At this point there is in fact no evidence yet as to where they came from prior to being in Augusta Co. or when they arrived in America. ==== VARUSSEL Mailing List ==== Remember, if you want to reply to a message that has been forwarded to the mailing list from the Russell County Message Board, you should go to the message board and post your reply there, not direclty to the mailing list.
