    2. For what it is worth, I was told that the missing books were taken by a clerk when the new courthouse was built. Does the state of VA, maybe Richmond in state archives have those copies of records missing? Not sure, but didn't the state have "Master" cospies of vital records. Correct me if I am wrong. My ancestors fall into those years as well. Having lived in Lebanon. Would love to see those records too. For someone to hold back something for so many years ago, is sad. Maybe some illicit affair to shame them, but why hold back for centuries, come on folks, share it with the peasant of us out there.

I have been told by some researchers with more experience and background than I, that in days of yore the clerks often would take the county's record books with them when they retired or left office, considering the volumes their personal property. Has anyone else heard something like this?
