She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Minnie Etta Statzer Dorton. She was a teacher in the public school of Floyd and Pulaski counties, retiring from the Russell County Schools. She was a 75 year member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two sons, Grover C. Howell Jr. and William E. Howell; and one grandson, William Charles Howell. Surviving are one daughter, Linda Katherine Howell Powers, Lebanon; three sons, James A. Howell, Graham, N.C., Allan Garrett Howell, Acme, Penn. and Larry Lee Howell, Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Frances Dorton Jackson, Lebanon; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Russell County Funeral Home in Lebanon, Va. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Chris Musick and the Rev. Earnest Jessee officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery.
