Born May 6, 1916, in Dante, VA. to George and Ellen Honto Popp, Mrs. Crater graduated from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in 1938, after which she spent a long and dedicated career in various capacities as a Registered Nurse at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Crater was preceded in death by her husband A.M. "Ab" Crater, in 1985, and infant son, Jacob Lee Crater, two sisters and three brothers. Surviving are: One daughter, Mary Ellen Crater of Clio, SC; one son, George Holton Crater and wife Denise of Elkin; four grandchildren, Abby Kimrey, Paul, Holly and Seth Crater; four great grandchildren Benjamin, Katie and Grayson Kimrey and William Crater; two sisters, Helen Lewis of St. Paul, VA., and Lena Mull of Morganton, NC. three brothers, Bill Popp of St Paul, VA; C. L. Popp of Detroit, MI; Franklin Popp of AZ. A graveside service will be conducted in Hollywood Cemetery, Thursday, June 12, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m., at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles Baker officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. The family suggests that any memorials be directed to the activity fund at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center, 700 Johnson Ridge Rd.
