At that time, Washington County covered present day Washington County and about 1/5 of Scott county to the West and about 3/4 of Smyth County to the East. It also held slivers of present day Tazewell County to the North and Grayson County to the Southeast. Also at that 1755 time, Russell county covered the entire tip of Virginia, including Lee, 4/5th of Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Buchahnan, Russell (of course, 1/2 of Tazewell, and a sliver of Wythe. At the time he signed the petition to make a new county from within Russell county... between Clinch Mountain, Powells Mountain, KY, and Stock Creek..., Joseph was 37 years old. Before the 1800 census, Russell was in fact divided into a large Lee county at the tip of VA, a large Russell county in the middle, and a large Tazewell county to the East. By the 1820 census, part of Lee and Russell formed Scott county. He died in Russell County in 1823, which at the time covered present day 1/2 of Wise, all of Russell and Dickenson, and 1/2 of Buchanan. My great Grandfather Leon Isacc Fields 1901-1968 lived on the Dickenson side of the Dickenson/Buchanan county line. He was the great great great grandson of Joseph Fields, and makes me the g-g-g-g-g-g-grandson. Does that help, Marlene? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
