I wrote this poem in June of 1978 when I was still a teenager, while reminiscing about those summer visits I spent with Granny ("Liz" Boyd Wilson 1911-1997) in Russell County. I wanted to share it in honor of summertime in Russell County. I titled it "Summer in Virginia" The summer's morning breeze Blowing through windows Cooling the warm kitchen Fragrant with the smell Of donuts fresh from the oven Outside the house The dew-covered grass Wetting my toes Each blade bending under my feet Leaving a path behind me As I walk toward my swing The distant thunder of horses hooves Pounding the green pastures Carried on the wind Mingling with the gentle mooing Of cows in the barn The boughs of the oak above me Turning their leaves gracefully Supporting the songbirds Welcoming the morning With songs of summer in Virginia - Michelle Annette Wilson
