He resided with his father in Castlewood where he volunteered in 1776 to guard the frontier, and in one tour marched to Boonesboro in KY. His father moved to KY in 1779, where James & his older brother Joseph entered service. His brother, Joseph, was killed at the Battle of Blue Licks. James was appointed Captain in the militia of Mercer Co KY. He lived in KY about 50 years, then moved to Boone Co Missouri, and then Lafayette Co Missouri. He died 8 July 1841.
