He was b 15 Apr 1760 & stated he was reared in Botetourt Co VA where he enlisted in 1776. While residing in Russell Co VA 1786-1789 he was an Indian Spy. He m. Feb 1790 in Russell Co VA - name of wife not given. In Dec 1790 they moved to Pendleton District in SC. He served there in the War of 1812. On 6 Dec 1829 he m Margaret McClain in Rabun Co GA. He d 24 May 1856 in Habersham Co GA. He stated that he was the 2nd son of John McClure by his 2nd wife. Judith Ferguson made statement for him in Rabun Co GA saying she saw his discharges in 1790 & was present when his house burned in 1792 in Pendleton Dist SC. John McCrosky made statement for him in Habersham Co GA in 1845 saying he was a resident of Russell Co VA when John McClure was an Indian spy there & that they were schoolmates when they were children. Several letters to the War dept. suggest that researchers of John McClure believe he was from the area of Botetourt that became Rockbridge Co VA. John McClure continued to have problems obtaining a pension from the time he applied in 1844. He did receive bounty land for his service in the War of 1812. 127 images in his file at footnote.
