Can someone tell me if the town of Wilder still exists? My husband's mother was born there. Her father was an immigrant who changed his last name and we don't know what it was. An envelope has been discovered that was addressed to him at P.O. Box 27, Wilder, Va dated 1924. The problem is the last name is not legible. I was wondering if there was a post office I could check with to see if they would have a record of who had that post office box during that year. No, what was once Wilder is now mostly a collection of abandoned mines, and all the former buildings have long since disappeared. Most were torn down even when I was a boy and that was over 60 years ago. My father was born in Wilder in 1917, by the way.
