Linda, et al, Family Search is the LDS Church's (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints [Mormon's])internet based web site. Ancestry.com originated as a private for profit enterprise. It's extensive digital indexing collection prompted a collaboration by the church, who's digital resources where limited at the time, which included a link to Ancestry.com from the FamilySearch website. RootsWeb was always touted as the "oldest and largest FREE genealogical community." But that is changing rapidly as the new FamilySearch is coming online. Though the lines are blurring, A "community" is a place where individuals can share their individual databases but is not the same as a resource site which contains raw records transcribed and digitized, such as courthouse records, census records, etc. While in the past there was no oversight of individual data submitted to The LDS Church's International Genealogical Index, (the LDS Church's former community site) those days are past. The FamilySearch Indexing Project, on the other hand, is a resource extraction project which requires review of each extraction by at least one other person for accuracy before submitting. It is done on a "check-in/check-out" basis by volunteers. The Church is making available all of its microfiche files from which people are able to extract the data and add to the resource database (see http://www.familysearchindexing.org). It is a terrific project to participate in. -darin -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Linda Spencer Sent: Tuesday, May 20, 2008 11:46 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VARUSSEL] Fw: Russell Tax assessment & Ancestry.com I don't understand why you people do not know that "FamilySearch" is sponsored and controlled by Ancestry. And that Ancestry (the Mormons) are sponsoring the indexing. And then they use the indexing of censuses, etc. (a freeby for them) to use that indexing, done by whomever is willing to do it. They then put that information on their website, for pay. But they don't check it. And all too often, the census indexes are incorrect. I subscribed to Ancestry for one year. One year too long. Too many of the census indexes were really wrong.
