Hi Carol: I have tons of information on the Dorton family. My gramdmother was a Dorton. I guess I should tell you right off that by no stretch of the imagination are we in any way connected to the Robert Benge family. That story originated from an item published in the Lebanon News around 1920. A Jonas Rasnick told the News that " The old folks used to tell about a white man named Dorton, who was wild and reckless and lived in the Indian Country. He was said to be the father of Benje the chief of the Cherokees. Colonel Henson Hobbs, of Maryland, one of my uncles, told about these incidents and I wrote it up for the Lebanon News. It was said that Arthur Hobbs, an uncle of Col. Henson Bobbs, killed Benje in Lee Co, near Cumberland Gap." As you probably know the incident did not take place near Cumberland Gap and Arthur Hobbs did not kill Benje, Vincent Hobbs did. Lawrence J. Fleenor Jr. wrote a book called "BENGE" which turned out to be and absolute joke. You may have seen or heard about it. It tells about the Dorton family and Benge living at the Dorton Fort near Nicklesville. The Dorton Fort was on the William Dorton Sr. land near Dickensonville which now has the new historical marker on it as a result of documentation I provided. And as I said I have a lot of data on the Dorton family and can provide any details you might be interested in. For example the first two Dorton children, William Jr. born 1750 and Edward in 1751 were born near Richmond VA and Robert Benge was born ca 1760 in southeast TN to John Benge and Wurteh. There was no Wurteh Watts Benge. Let me know what data you might want.
