This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: tres_thompson Surnames: Thompson, Jackson, Fletcher, Steele, Hart, Duff Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.russell/7447/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I had asked my dad year after year where exactly his dad Lucien Thompson Sr., grandpa Ross Thompson, greatgrandpa Fullen Thompson, and greatgreatgrandpa Rolen Thompson were born in Russell Co., and each time he said he'd know it if he saw it, but then the conversation drifted and that ended it. This week, he was out visiting us here in Texas for my daughter Lucy's college graduation, and we started talking again about what he remembered about it, from visits when he was a boy. I got inspired, quickly pulled out a sheet of paper and asked him to sketch it. The more he talked, the more he remembered--he's not quite 76, a retired-USAF pilot, and drove he and my mother to TX for the graduation, still very sharp, the first generation of our family not a farmer and stock trader. Anyway, he remembered the house being 2 or 3 stories tall, with porches around 3 sides, set up on a bluff above the creek, with the road below above the normal banks of the river, with barn and outbuilding behind, apple and other fruit orchards along the river, fields behind the barn. The creek should be Thompson's Creek, and AFTER he drew this we looked at some maps online and sure enough this matches pretty close to the bend in the river downstream from the creek. I think that the R.R. comes in on the north bank of the creek. Anyone still in Russell Co. familiar with this area, willing to verify any of this? This would be the site where Rolen Thompson farmed, part of William Thompson's original survey, and where the Thompsons raised their families for generations. I would dearly like some pointers for upcoming trips, and definitely don't want to trespass on someone else's land! Any help anyone can give would be most welcome! Sketched map attached. -Tres Thompson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Tres, Thank you very much for posting this. I did not receive your attached map. When you have time, will you please email it to me directly at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>, or because attached files are not forwarded to the email list, repost it at the Russell County Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.russell/7447/mb.ashx<http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.russell/7447/mb.ashx> I am a descendent of Celia THOMPSON, daughter of William THOMPSON, married James Fletcher, residence Russell County. If you have not seen this, below is more information posted earlier discussing where these boundaries would be on a present-day map of the area. There is more information about the 1785 William Thompson Land Grant, for a "parcel of land containing one hundred and thirty three acres... on both sides of Thompson's Creek, a branch of Clinch River." at, http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/landgrants/williamthompson.html<http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/landgrants/williamthompson.html> > Mike, > Do you happen to know the location of the William Thompson Land Grant at > the link, > http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/landgrants/williamthompson.html<http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/landgrants/williamthompson.html> > > I've wondered where this land is, ever since seeing this. > > Thank you for all you have done for all of us with Russell County roots! > > Scott Scott, Go to this link: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.97974&lon=-82.07117&size=l&u=4&datum=nad83&layer=DRG<http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.97974&lon=-82.07117&size=l&u=4&datum=nad83&layer=DRG> If this works correctly, there should be a red cross in the middle of the page. This is about where the land was. See the Smith Cemetery to the left (Southwest) of the red cross? That cemetery is on what was the John Thompson land that is included on the same page as the William Thompson Land grant above. John was William's brother. He sold his land to another brother, Richard's children. The Smith Cemetery is the Albert G. Smith Cem. Here's the link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/cemeteries/agsmithcem.html<http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/cemeteries/agsmithcem.html> Albert G. Smith was the s/o George Smith & Isabella Thompson, d/o Richard Thompson. It's very likely that George & Isabella are buried here in unmarked graves. The other cemetery just to the northeast of the Smith Cem. is the Jefferson J. Kiser Cem. Here's the link to it: http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/cemeteries/jjkisercem.html<http://www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/cemeteries/jjkisercem.html> That cemetery is on land owned by my cousin Larry Miller.
