In the 1880 Carter CO, KY, Federal census, there is a family enumerated whose names, dates and ages seem in concordance with the information we know: on pg. 31 of the Carter Co census, James (who would have been 27 at the time of his marriage, and Elizabeth, who would have been 16, have living with them, in addition to their son,John, his wife Olivia and their infant son, Robert, two BARTEE nephews and a niece: Henry (20), David (16) and Nancy J.(15). If thatMrs. James Williams was born Eliz. Bartee, these would be her relatives. Further more, Carter county is adjacent to the county where my Great-great grandparents, William Roscoe Porter and his wife, Mary "Polly" Bartee Porter, originally from Grayson CO, VA and Russell Co, VA, respectively, had come, gotten married [in Greenup--now Boyd CO, KY] and where their three children were born. I have gl! anced at records in the past and there were numerous other Bartee families in the area contemporaneously. Indeed, my GGgrandparent's household in Ashland, KY,included Mary Bartee's mother, Mahala Ring Bartee. After the Civil War, all of my aforementioned antecedants moved further west, to Osage CO, Kansas. Various Bartees are listed in both the Scranton City Cemetery and another Osage CO, KS, cemetery as well. It is also surely not a coincidence that a principal city in Carter CO, KY, is named Grayson--the name of the western Virginia county originally home to some of these people. Might this be worth pursuing? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
