Hello, We are writing this in an effort to reach Mr. Mike Dye who we understand is the only one who can answer this question for us. Regarding the Overseer of the Poor book for Russell County in 1810- #Russell County court ordered that James Francis, John Chaney, Hezekiah Chaney, and Able Chaney, all poor children be bound out as apprentices in 1810. Court order 4 page 135. Our John would have been about 7 years old. Were they all related as brothers? The information regarding the 3 boys while reviewing the Russell county court order books. In those days the court appointed someone to be the "Overseer of the Poor". These people were sort of like present day social workers and in this particular case the person was responsible for seeing that these Chaneys boys were apprenticed to someone as their parents were too poor to provide for them. I can assure you they were not orphans. If they had been orphans the court would have handled the boys very differently. When Lane was at the courthouse in Lebanon VA several years back, the clerk allowed them to look for the book where the Overseers recorded their activities (they had to report to the court concerning their activities) and we could not locate this book. I believe that if that book can be found it would tell us who their parents were! I contacted Mike Dye who is a very knowledgeable person concerning Russell county records and he told me that he believed that it was deliberately taken from the courthouse many years ago and that he might have a lead on who had it.
D and K, This is Mike. It's possible we did, but I don't remember discussing the records of the overseers of the poor. I've certainly never seen them at the courthouse. I have discussed my theories as to the first will and marriage books. As to having a lead on the location of either of these books or the records of the overseers of the poor, I'm sorry, but I don't have one.
