Hess, b 8/27/1882, Blackford, Russell County, VA Her mother: Alafair Ray, b 10/20/1889, d 5/1976 Thomas G. Hess was the son of John David Hess, b 9/30/1855, Russell County, VA and Mary A. Dye, b 7/18/1858, Russell County, VA. John David Hess b 1855, died 1/27/1951, Russell County, VA, was the son of Patton H. Hess and Sarah Miller. Mary A. Dye, b 1858 was the daughter of Pryer Dye and Sarah Hess. Patton H. Hess, b 4/4/1833, RC, VA, d 9/29/1893, was the son of Henry Lee Hess and Mary Catherine Ball. Sarah L "Sally" Miller, b 6/27/1828, RC VA, d 12/22/1905, RC VA was the daughter of John Henry Miller and Mary Catherine Walker (some conflicting info here) Pryer Dye, b abt 1834, RC VA, was the son of John Dye and Nancy Little. Sarah A. Hess, b abt 1840 was the daughter of John Hess Jr. and Lucinda Rhea/Ray. Jumping back to Lucy Hess, my grandmother, her mother was Alafair Ray, b 10/20/1889; d. 5/1976. Alafair was the daughter of Unknown Ray (Died in Civil War) and Unknown Mother (Died in Civil War). She was raised by her grandparents Johnson Donte Ray and Cosby Jane Plaster. Any info on these unknown parents greatly appreciated. Johnson Donte Ray b 10/12/1860, d 8/19/1934 was the son of Iradell/Ardell Ray and Rhoda Sargent. Cosby Jane Plaster b 1871, d 1954, was the daughter of Harvey Lee Plaster and Mary Elizabeth Ray. All of the people above were born and died in Russell County VA (RC VA).
