That is the way the letter was written. John Mayo also writes about the marriage of Eunice Boothe to Michael Jackson s/o James Jackson & Susanna Sword but a different Sword family. The family was acquainted with the Swords. For years I didn't put in parents for Elizabeth Taylor Boothe and I might have just had a father. John Mayo was a son of Ann Taylor. Here's a transcription the Law Order Book Entry that proves it: Russell County, Virginia Law Order Book #9, pages 3-4, Mar 1828: Report of Wm. Jackson, one of the Overseers of the Poor, ordered that John Mayo a poor child of Ann Taylor deceased be bound out by the overseers of the poor. Richard Soard and I believe that Ann was an older daughter of William Taylor & Mary Sword which would have made John Mayo a gr. grandson of Michael Sword, explaining why he would say "old grandfather Sword died last night" in the letter he wrote. Since he and Elizabeth "Taylor" Boothe would have been cousins on the Taylor side and from the same area she and James would have surely known Michael Sword. John Mayo that may assist in untangling the Sword family mystery. In 1850, John Mayo, age 26, was living in HH #1974 in the Washington Co., VA census along with wife, Elizabeth "Boardwine", also age 26, and several children. Living next door was Elizabeth's father Joshua Boardwine and his second wife Margaret Scott, whom he had married in Washington Co. in 1843. Joshua Boardwine had previously lived in Russell Co., VA and was listed there in 1830. It is reported that Joshua Boardwine's first wife was Mary "Polly" Price, parents unknown at this point. By 1860 Elizabeth Boardwine was living back in Russell Co. and she and her children were using the Boardwine name instead of Mayo and John Mayo cannot be found. Mike Joyce, I too am trying to untangle the Taylor and Sword families. I am very interested in your letter. Who was John Mayo and where was he living when he wrote to the Boothes? I am descended from William Taylor (1785-1860) and Mary/Polly Sword's (1793-1863) son Samuel Gilbert Taylor (1811-1852) who left Russell County ca 1829 to move to Indiana with his new wife Nancy Phipps, her father Jesse Phipps and her brothers. My great-grandmother was one Ruth B Harris but this was her married name as listed in the 1920 and 1930 Federal Census (image attached) showing her married to Walter B Harris of the Castlewood Magisterial District. I can positively confirm that the persons listed in this census record are my family. I have traced your Ruth B Harris from 1900 – 1910. The given name and birthdates and places match up and then suddenly, apparently the only Ruth B anything in that area is Ruth B Harris in 1920. My belief is that this is because it is the same person, now married. Your database lists no husband or children for Ruth B Jessee (daughter of Marshal Greeley Jessee. Do you have any information about her that might allow me to make this connection to the Jessee family? Any information affirmative or negative would be appreciated. He created given names for people whose surnames existed in the geographic area and linked them in what would appear to be a plausible realationship. He also created fraulent LDS film numbers for citations to support his claims but the films don't exist. He also knew marriage records for that period in Russell county were missing and his created marriages could not be disproven. This continues to be a terrible disappointment and frustrating fact for those of us researching the Sword surname.
