I've "rescued" three old photographs belonging to the HAWKINS Family of Missouri. The first is a photograph of Reuben HAWKINS which was taken at the Dunlap Studio in Chillicothe, MO. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Reuben appearing to be in his 40's or 50's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has written "Jennie's Uncle" on the back of the photograph. The second photograph is of Ethie HAWKINS and was taken at the same studio in Chillicothe, MO, likely at the same time in the 1880's with Ethie likely in her 30's or 40's at the time. In addition to her name, someone has written "Uncle Reuben's wife" on the back of the photograph. The third photograph is identified as including Jennie HAWKINS and was taken at the Genelli Studio in St. Louis, MO. There are three girls in the photograph with Jennie indicated as the girl on the left. This third photograph was likely taken in the 1890's with all three young ladies likely in their teens at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding the family: Reuben HAWKINS b. 1834 in Franklin Co. IN to parents David HAWKINS (b. 17 May 1805) and Margaret J. ALLEY (b. 6 Jan 1811 in Russell Co, VA). Reuben was the oldest of the couple's 8 children including, Reuben; Jasper; Samuel; Nathan; John; Zerelda; William W.; and Elvira Ann HAWKINS all born between 1834 and 1851 in IN and MO. Reuben HAWKINS married Nancy Ethaline HICKLIN (b. 25 Dec 1845 in Livingston Co. MO) on 1 Mar 1866. Census records provide the following: 1870 census of Chillicothe, MO: Reuben HAWKINS, age 37, a Life Insurance Agent, born IN Nancy E. HAWKINS, age 24, born MO Lydia HAWKINS, age 3, born MO Franklin HAWKINS, age 3 months, born MO Eliza HICKLIN, age 68, born KY Mary A. HICKLIN, age 27, born MO 1880 census of Chillicothe, MO: Reuben HAWKINS, age 46, born IN, Clerks in Bank, parents born TN/VA Nancy E. HAWKINS, wife, age 34, born MO, Keeping House, parents born KY Lydia HAWKINS, dau, age 13, born MO Franklin HAWKINS, son, age 10, born MO Adalaide HAWKINS, dau, age 4, born MO Reuben HAWKINS, son, age 1, born MO + 1 House Servant 1900 census of Chillicothe, MO: Reuben HAWKINS, age 66, divorced, born Jan 1844, born IN, parents born VA, a Banker Frank HAWKINS, son, age 30, born Feb 1870, born MO, parents born IN/MO, a Carpenter Margaret HAWKINS, dau, age 17, born Apr 1883, born MO, parents born IN/MO, at School 1910 census of Chillicothe, MO: Reuben HAWKINS, age 76, divorced, born IN, parents born TN/VA, a Retired Banker Frank HAWKINS, son, age 40, born MO, parents born IN/MO, a House Carpenter Margaret HAWKINS, dau, age 27, born MO, parents born IN/MO I am hoping to locate someone from the family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Rodney, According to the cemetery records, Lee Marshall 19 July 1908 - 22 April 1938 and his brother in law Charlie Miller 20 June 1913 - 22 April 1938 are / were buried in my g gf George W. Culbertson's cemetery near Nicklesville in Scott Co. I say are/were because I seem to remember someone saying that their bodies had been moved somewhere else. Think it may have been the Estill Cemetery, on the way into Gate City, but not positive. As far as I know there is no relationship to the Culbertson family. And this is the only information I have. The Culbertson cemetery is near Gillenwater Chapel on SR 681. Hope this helps. I am curious what you might know. I note that some info was supplied by a Jessee--who I think is now deceased per the obit I have seen--that links Herman Lee Jones and Lona Bernice Jessee. A book has recently been published about Hermie Lee Jones (you can google "Hermie Lee Jones" in quotes to get the info) who participated in a notorious double murder in 1949 (Sevier Co, TN - though he lived in Fall Branch in Wash Co, TN). He was released about 1965 and I gather he lived with or married a woman within a few years whom I would deduce from the info of your Jessee source is Lona Jessee. The children listed in your Jessee's contribution were Steven Allen Jones and Amy Marie Jones. These are the same names I copied from a makeshift mailbox that included Hermie Lee's name about 20 yrs ago when I drove past what I presume was his place in Fall Branch, TN. I suppose I could have stopped to meet him (he was my Dad's cousin) but his reputation was such that I did not relish meeting him (What do I talk about? "So, did you kill anyone lately?"). Interestingly and tragically a Steven Allen Jones was convicted of a murder in Elizabethton, TN in 2004 and again, I would reckon we are talking about the same person. I sort of have the feeling that Hermie's wife (the book says Hermie Lee divorced and had two children and one grandchild) had already left him by the time I drove by the home in the late 1980's. I seemed curious to me that the kids would have been. I notice that Lona's death was given as Feb 1997. I wonder if this was from an obit or tombstone (where?) or whatever. You may not know much about Lona. I suspect life with Hermie separated her a bit from her kin but I know so little I cannot say. Maybe she would have reattached after leaving him if she is the one who married him--which seems probable to me. She would have been fairly young compared to Hermie (abt 25 yrs younger) when she had Steven Allen since I think he was probably born about 1970 judging from the age given to him in the Elizabethon Star (I think about April 15 or so of 2004). I don't really know anything about Amy Marie Jones. Some internet searches have made me wonder if she is the Amy Jones who married Clayton Goad and is mentioned in two obits as a granddaughter of a Scott family (adopted? foster child?) from Carter Co. It's hard to figure with a name as common as Jones. Anyway, I am curious if you have any info. I notice there are some Joneses in your tree from Ohio but I don't think they are the same bunch. Well I trust this is interesting but I hope not too depressing. Best Regards, Stuart Jones Rosedale, MD
