Author: sueatrice Surnames: Johnson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.russell/7919/mb.ashx Message Board Post: have been trying to find George Johnson of Russell County, Virginia, he married Maude Burton and they had a child born 11-12-1907 & named him Willard Johnson who was later shot and killed by Bill Hurd in 1940....I have not been able to locate any information regarding George Johnson, I think he died sometime between 1907 and 1909 when Maude re married in Wise County Virginia to Grover Cleveland Thomason. Do you have any idea where I might find some info about George Johnson, I believe his parents were John Johnson and Jane Elam, not sure. He had a sister named Ester Johnson who married Fulton Burton in 1905.....any help would be appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MaxErvin75 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.russell/7918.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I can't add much, but for what it is worth-- to be more specific, the church was apparently located at Big Moccasin Gap, which places it in present-day Scott Co., VA. In E.J. Sutherland's History of the Washington District Regular Primitive Baptist Association 1811- 1951 (posted at New River Notes), he refers to the church as just "Moccasin" or "Moqueson". He mentions that in 1811, it was in the Holston (Baptist) Association, and in 1814 it joined the Washington Dist. Assn, then in 1851, it was dismissed to join the Stony Creek Assn. Perhaps you can find something in the history of the Holston Baptist Assn on the founding of the church. ETSU, I think, has some Assn. papers in the archives. Strangely, Addington's History of Scott County includes several early churches, but does not mention Moccasin at all. Author: hobo_2 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.russell/7918/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Am interested in the formation of this Church founded (I believe) 26 October 1803. Supposedly, my ancestor William Quillen and brother, Teague Quillen, joined with Rev. Samuel and Nancy Hilton, Rev. James (or Jesse)Wilson, Samuel Strong, Margaret Davidson, Ann Black, Rebecca McClellan, Priscilla Jeffries, Samuel and Polly Eastep, and Polly Wilshire to form the church. They were loaned from the Double Spring Church near nowadays Kingsport, TN. Seems they had been attending the church and it was some distance from where they lived so I assume they wanted to form one of their own. This information was from a website, but the contact person does not know where the info came from. Does anyone out there have information about this church and these people? My ancestor, John Quillen (son of William) married Nancy Wayland of the Stony Creek Church. I do have the minutes from that church. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks. I felt she was probably deceased by now, as she was only a couple years older than my father. I wrote an uncle who was 10 years old at the time of Dollie's marriage to my grandfather. He remembered her well--she was kind to him and his brother, was pretty, and could cook--they had been without a mother for a while. He thought she was related to, or was a friend of the Seymour family who lived just north of the small town of Pollocksville in Jones Co., NC. My grandfather (age 72 at the time of their marriage) met Dollie through these Seymours who may have been related to our Hill family. (Being only 10 at the time, my uncle may not have been too clear on who was related to the Seymours, us or Dolly.) He remembers walking with Dollie to the house my family lived in, south of Trenton, NC so that she could catch the bus back to Coeburn, VA. He says she was homesick for Virginia. He also wondered what happened to her, and I will let him know of your reply t! o my post. In your research, if you come accross an relationship with the Seymour family or any other info on Dollie, please let me know. Thanks again, and the best to you and your family.
