I have the article that tells about the killing of Deputy Smith - who was part of the possee that was killed also - I would like to see the article talking about Peter Dickenson. "Deputy Sheriff S. Smith of Russell County, was killed one day last week by being shot from ambush by George Pilkins. The the 9th inst. Pilkins killed an old colored man, Peter Dickenson, and made his escape. A reward of $200 was offered for his capture. The sheriff of the county formed a posse to capture Pilkins and in the posse was Deputy Sheriff Smith. He was trying to head off Pilkins when he was shot. The balance of the posse heard the report of the gun and on reaching Smith found him dead.Shot in the breast. Pilkins made his escape. Do you suppose that the recent non-match of DNA you mentioned suggests that there were two unrelated family groups of Wheelers in Washington County, VA, c. 1800? I had been working with the supposition that all Wheelers in this lightly populated frontier county must surely be kin of some sort. None of the John Wheelers you mention seem likely to be "my" John, from what I think I know. "My" John married the only daughter of a prominent family, the largest landowners in Yancey County, NC, in 1821, and lived there until he died in 1869. Thank you again. This is a most frustrating line. Regards, Kevin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. DNA is something you could consider. 10 years is a long time without any progress. My Wheelers are in same boat, only longer. Lately many are resorting to DNA to at least find a trail to follow. William Wheeler and Mary Friend had a son, John Wheeler living in Rhea Co. Tennessee Feb. 7, 1831. Records place him in Wash. Co. Va. after his father died 1815. He lived on the 96 acres with others in his family, including his mother Mary. Records also exist for him in Rhea Co. where he lived and died. On Feb.7, 1831 he was back in Wash. Co. Va. and signed a deed over to a Martin Moore, his father, William Wheelers original farm, "on the N. side of the N. fork of Holston river at the mouth of Tumbling Creek containing 96 acres." Recent cheek swab for y-dna (male) submitted by a descendent of William Wheeler of Tumbling Creek, was not a match to a y-dna descendent of James Wheeler of Sinclair Bottom. My Wheelers are the Washington Co. Va. Wheelers who lived in Sinclairs Bottom and spread out everywhere from there. There were at least 4 John Wheelers. One John, and the oldest, in my records, married Mary Blessing, daughter of Jacob Blessing, and she and John Wheeler were in Knox Co.Tennessee 1833. Jacob Blessing had died, leaving large landholdings in Wash. Co. Va. Many records indicate his place of residence was Sinclair Bottom. John Wheeler and Mary were in court naming their son Solomon their acting attorney back in Wash. Co. then John disappeared. ( I can't find him) His wife and some children went to Missouri. Another John Wheeler son of Oliver Wheeler Sen died Marion Va. after 1880. He said his father came from New York in 1880 census. From your past messages it appears you have already done a lot of research on the Wash. Co. Wheelers. James Wheeler and Fairleanah Harrison were in Floyd Co. Ky. as early as 1806-1808. He paid his last personal tax abt. 1806 Wash. Co. Va. He has court records 1808 Floyd Co. Ky. He could have earlier Floyd Co. records but the courthouse burned 1808, destroying earlier records of Floyd Co. Descendents of James and Fairleanah regard a John Harrison Wheeler born abt. 1811 as the son of James and Fairleanah. Any children they might have had in Va. (my opinion) went with them to Ky. Needs more research. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My ancestor John Wheeler was born in Washington County, Virginia (per census records)in the latter half of 1792 or the first half of 1793. He was 68 years old when he enlisted in the Confederate Army July 5, 1861. At that time he had lived for forty years in Yancey County, NC, which is not too far from Washington County, VA. I suspect he may have been John Henry Wheeler, but I am not sure of the middle name. When I started this thread more than ten years ago, I was looking for John Wheeler's parents, and I still am. Can anyone at least help me eliminate these two couples as possible parents? Deepest sincere gratitude to anyone who can help. BUT, why would the pension records give her name as Sally if her immediate family (daughter) knew her as Francis??? Any ideas? Does anyone know the approximate date of birth of Sarah Francis? Jesse Duncan's pension file lists only 5 living children when he died in 1848: Nancy Lark, Phebe Lynch, Sally McCoy, Amey Collins and Hannah Green. I suspect these daughters were listed in order by birth since we have pretty much pinned down the ages from census records of all but Sally. Nancy b. ca 1792 NC, Phebe b. ca 1794 VA (prob. Russell Co), Sally poss b. 1795-1803, Amy b. ca 1804 VA and Hannah b. ca 1805 VA. Thanks, Peggy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
