He died of Smallpox in 1873 Marbia was probably the daughter of Sarah Rickles, listed as a spinister, who later married a Fields and then a Squire Tate. (Question?--A cousin gave me the above information, could the Fields man and the Squire Tate I have here be the same person as your Squire Fields. Marbia married Hiram Vaughn after James Gulley Tate died. Her children by Hiram are: 1-Florence Vaughn, born 1874 2-Rebecca Vaughn, born 1876 3-Hiram I. Vaughn, born 1878

I believe the Squire Fields i am looking for was born around 1775. My grandmother, Sarah Rickles (ggg) evidently had several children with him. Whether or not they ever married I do not know. And to be quite honest I'm not even sure Squire is the father of Sarah's daughter, Mariba (my gg grandmother), but I find it listed on some sites that he is the father. Very confusing, but interesting. I'm finding out that many of my relatives were colorful... thank you again for the information. Betty

My gg grandparents were William and Martha Willis Wood. William was the s/o John and Mary "Polly" Musick Wood of Washington Co., VA. William had a brother named Dempsey who went by Wood sometimes and Woods sometimes. He married Margaret B. ?. Their children were: Mary Jane Wood Sullivan, Craig Wood, Elizabeth who we believe died young, Sarah M. Wood, Martha W. Wood Law, Ann Eliza Wood Stout, James Wood, and Cynthia Wood b. May 1878 according to 1900 census. Dempsey was not in the 1910 census so "presuming" that he had died, cannot find a death record. William and Alexander both have death records in Washington Co., VA. Alexander is the brother of William and Dempsey. In the 1920 Russell Co., VA census Ed.79 sheet # 6 A household 95 95 there is a Hugh T. Lesley, head of household, 33, Cynthia, wife 41 and mother-in-law Margaret B. Woods 76, Wd. Cynthia is the right age to be the daughter of Dempsey and Margaret B. Wood (Woods), Margaret's age is a little off but believe this could be her. We are trying to prove that and find something about the Lesley family. There is a Will Lesley 26, wife Bessie 18 living at household 93 93. We cannot find death and burial for Dempsey or Margaret B. Wood (Woods), nor marriage for them or Cynthia to Hugh. Go to the following link: http://www.segenealogy.com/virginia/va_maps/va_cm.htm It shows county boundaries for every census year. In 1790, Virginia and West Virginia were still one state. You can click from census year to census year to see the changes. Russell County did originally border Tennessee. Some time between 1790 and 1800, that changed. -----Original Message----- From: joycerussell@tds.net To: VARUSSEL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: 18 Apr 2005 23:10:28 -0600 Subject: [VARUSSEL] Re: Russell County, Virginia This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Hi Mike !! IF a person could lay the outline of this area (Beverly-Borden tracts)on top of a current Virginia map how much would much would it cover ??????? I do know that it would be above Staunton & below Roanoke,Va. Is there a website with THIS kind of a map ?Would it include the Russell Co.area ??? As you know I am compiling on the Tunnell's(U.S.A.)& the Tunnell-Ball's of Russell Co.Va.area but my Paternal G.G.Grandfather Richard Cousart(b.1720 at sea)came down from Lancaster Co.,Pa.in@1739 and stayed there 'till 1755 and then they went to Anson Co.N.C.which later becames Lancaster Co.S.C. I am also doing a Cousart/Cowsar book .~~~~~~Wilma M.(COWSAR)Brown
