For those of you interested in Native American Heritage, here is a good article that discusses the topic along with some physical characteristics of people with Native ancestry that might not even know it. Click link below. For example, "Shovel Teeth" is a documented characteristic only found in some persons who are Native Americans. The article explains it. If you exhibit one or more of the physical characteristics described, maybe it will inspire you to look further for real proof. In any case, the article is a good discussion on the subject of "Hidden Native Ancestry and Genealogy". It also offers references and sources so you can dig deeper if you are seriously searching. http://members.tripod.com/~imblackeagle/looks1.htm Randy Crouse McNew Huntsville, AL

For information contact “Soupbean” Katie Angermeyer at dolfit@dccnet.com or 604-885-2969. The Russell Co. connection to is through Thomas Johnson (b. abt1757 MD – d.1835 Carter/ Johnson Co. TN). He was an early pioneer in Lebanon, Castlewood, Elk Garden. His son Thomas H. Johnson married Elizabeth Lindsey of Washington Co., and their daughter Barbara Johnson married her first cousin David Lindsey. Our great grandfather is Barbara and David's son, James Alexander Lindsey born in Johnson County TN. I believe there are descendents of the elder Thomas Johnson or his brother Benjamin Johnson still living in Russell County. A James G. Johnson had written papers on this family history in 1947, and mentioned he still owned land at Elk Garden, and his brother Odgen Johnson lived in Lebanon. Would dearly love to connect with descendents of this family.

DNA mitrochondrial ancestry might clear some of this up in the future. If your ancestors were settlers on the edge of the frontiers in the 1700's and early 1800's and had mixed in with the local tribes, it could be far back enough that there would be no chance of documentation. Reading early history from this time, there was a lot of confrontation and violence back and forth between the settler's and the Indians. Often prisoners of the Indians, adults and childern were "adopted" into an Indian family. This happened to Daniel Boone. Many of the children, if they were held for years, married into the tribe and were reclaimed by their settler families later. I'm sure these stories survived. My families hail from Smyth, Russell, Washington counties, also North Carolina & Kentucky. My Taylor grandmother was also according to family lore, of part Indian ancestry. Her ancestors I have traced back to North Carolina in the late 1700's. Curiously enough I have a photo of her wearing a cloth headband. Never seen this on photos of any of my other ancestors. But I can't find those connections, much less prove it, as paperwork from that time is scare, and no one could write anyway. But other family "myths" or stories have panned out in the past, so I don't discount my great grandmother's purported heritage. Donna

Remember though to get at the truth, which is what you want, ignore the anecdotal stuff. In this string they said they saw an old photo of America Grayson and she had very dark skin. Well, in black and white photos, many people have dark skin. Be ready to accept the possibility that you may have black people in your ancestry. That is much more likely than Indian. Quite often Mulattos would try to pass themselves as Indians since Indians made poor slaves and were free to travel. Some people have trouble dealing with black ancestry and invent groups like Melungeons to offer a more dramatic and exotic explanation for their ancestors.

However the trouble with Melungeon ancestry is that the group is ill-defined and in many places not recognizable by physical appearance, name or otherwise. There is some question in my mind if there really is such a thing as a Melungeon. The group seems to have been invented back in the 1950's. Sorry to be negative but I have looked at the all the websites popping up and I am just not convinced it is a real ethnic group. Anecdotal evidence is the enemy of real research.
List This writer is correct, with the surname of Hicks you will find that name with chiefs of the Cherokee people of Tenn. and NC and even Fla. the reason being was that in the early days of Va. 1628 or so a Rev Hicks and Evans was sent out to make peace and convert the native people. And as they were converted they took the surname of "Hicks" or "Evans". The Hicks clan of Russell Co in Va I have traced back to John Hicks of Cumberland Co in Va. in 1702 and he was not Indian or was his wife. William Hicks came to Jamestown in 1611 from England and he was the for father of Robert Hicks who had a son John Hicks but I have not connected them as the same. We must respect the all Native people most of all. Thanks David Hicks PS David Hicks was recorded in Surry England in 0192 AD as a ward of the Church,, do not think I will get back to there HEHE. ----- Original Message ----- From: <kitagista@adelphia.net> To: <VARUSSEL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2005 9:45 PM Subject: [VARUSSEL] Re: America M. Why is she living with the Payne family? Where is she from? It is believed that she is Native American, most likely Cherokee. It is also believed that the Payne's adopted her and raised her. It appears she was born in North Carolina. She later married Thompson Cole and moved to Kentucky. Later in life, she is known as America Cole or America Payne. Could she be from Grayson County, perhaps? Any help would be much appreciated. Are there adoption records from the 1840s? Native American records from this area? Thank you.
